Efesogie:that's why you have linguist experts in that field. Eg. A lot of words presumed to have been used in the Proto-Indo-European language have been sourced out without the use of any ancient dictionary 1 Like |

Efesogie: Keep committing the strawman fallacy while pretending to be a ret@rd. I have repeatedly claimed that he was made an acting/interim Oba of Benin by the British Government immediately following Ovanramwen's exile. "Acting" and "Interim" are the precise words I've repeatedly used, and used by your Edonet sources. Stop pretending to blind to them, and stop trying to spin the debate into what I never talked about. In any case, the single fact that he was installed as an acting Oba almost immediately after Ovanramwen's exile until 1914 disproves your contention that there was an absolute vacuum in the Benin palace. Moreover, the single fact that Eweka 2 (who began to reign as the Oba from 1914) came to rebuild the razed palace shows clearly there was a palace from which he ruled in his early years before his rebuilding project took efect. In other words, there was a palace where the acting Oba, Agho Ogbedeoyo ---- from whom Eweka 2 took over ---- ruled Benin kingdom from. These two foregoing facts alone destroy the sentiment you've been pushing that Benin kingdom had neither a palace nor a ruler in 1903 from where a ruler would have exited to honour the then Ooni's visit to Lagos. Moreover, I'm still waiting for you to demostrate how your contention ---- which although have been debunked ---- proves that the kings of the Southern Protectorate (from Warri westward) did not in fact vacate their respective palaces in honour of the then Ooni's visit to Lagos as documented in the 1903 Government Gazette. 3 Likes 1 Share |

macof: His contention on etymology isn't worth replying to. It reeks of ignorance. His basic argument is that a group of people have absolutely no idea where their own words derive from unless some dictionary tells them. What can be more absurd? 1 Like 1 Share |

Olu317: When Yoruba is written then there is a standard form. Tonal variation dissipates in Yoruba writing. The standardized writting mode of Yoruba language is one and only one --- And it is what I have shown up there. Moreover, none of your diacritics which I corrected conforms to any known Yoruba dialect for the same meaning of words you intended. Peace! |

TAO11: That part is settled now , i felt the your panic when i mentioned you ,you were so carefull not to misinform, Anyway the ordeal has been settled obaseki wasnt the oba but acted as one in the oba absent so vacating his stool for the ooni for a protest was is own personal doing and can't be equated to the throne or the oba of benin, and even if the oba was on sit And carried out such action it will be because of father( benin) to son (ife) sympathy |
Re: 12 True Facts You Have Never Heard About The Yoruba Nation by Olu317(m): 8:00pm On Jan 04, 2020 |
TAO11:Yoruba does not have a standard form because, Oyo dialect is the written form which is not the best of it all. After all, you mentioned old Yoruba dialects within the context of Ijebu or Eastern Yoruba, which I agree with. Take for instance, Ode(though I didnt put diacritics) in Oyo is ( Outing/to go for a party). While, Eastern Yoruba call Ode as base or foundation. Certainly, you will understand my point even if I have no intention to discredit Oyo's dialect, because there were problems with standardization of Yoruba language. In all school of thought, all Yoruba dialects are standard because non is greater than the other. It is based on this knowledge that repeatedly, I have gone far to understudy Eastern, Oyo and other dialects which is the classical Hebrew! I am sure ,you won't be comfortable and I wont push you beyond our boundaries,in the same manner some set of people disagreed with, simply because they can't read it. Having opined this,it doesn't mean, you or anyone can't read it if such have someone who can put such person through to it. All that's important, is interest and perseverance to understanding it. Furthermore, to expose you to my point on the diacritics, here is Sun in Yoruba language inside a dictionary that's over century old.

Below is , ‘Sun' in Yoruba language, which is screenshot.Even, with error in certain disagreement in diacritics, I will categorically emphasise here, that there is no way with my vast knowledge in classic Semitic language that I can't solve certain ideograms. Let me clearly affirm here that the purpose of showcasing this information is to keep people abreast with reality about ancient Yoruba people.

macof: You can't have an etimology for languages whose words have only recently started to be written. You guys should stop pretending to know what you don't. Africa needs knowledge, education, not fraudsters preying on the credulity of some young or uneducated Africans. You guys are taking Africa backwards to satisfy your low self esteem. Pity. Bring education, not lies and trolling and propaganda. |

gregyboy: Don't allow his trolling get to you. You seem tired of talking to the troll and you are now ready to make a deal with his lies to avoid his trolling. 1) Chief Agho Obaseki was Iyase, not Oba. 2) Being crowned means being made king. 3) There was no palace when the actual palace was burnt down. 4) Nobody in Benin empire left his sit "when they heard ooni of ife" was summoned to Lagos. 5) stop trying to cut a deal with liars, if you are tired of talking to the Yoruba trolls then just don't talk to them. Their main thing is to try to talk about a period which is mostly unknown and then claim things took place in that period without bringing any proof whatsoever. This is an easy trick. Unfortunately for them, this period of time is very well known, just not to most ill educated Nigerians. Google will never replace education. |

gregyboy: First: You didn't mention me. Whom you mentioned was a certain TAOF. The so-called "panic" is therefore only in your wildest imagination. Second: "That part (which you noted that) is settled now" has always been my point which I have made repeatedly. It is you who have just relieved yourself from some of your prejudices. Third: Your point (that the Oba of Benin wouldn't have vacated his throne to honour the Ooni) is at best a moot point. And your point about the father--son relationship between the Ooni (the father) and the Oba of Benin (the son) is also true. Cheers! 2 Likes 1 Share |

Olu317: My point is: There is a standard written form. Emphasis on written. You seem to have missed that which is the critical aspect of my point. Also, on the last part of your comment which relates to the Yoruba dictionary: Please note that there is absolutely NO mention of "SUN" (in Yoruba language) in the Yoruba dictionary you attached. The words you highlighted in the dictionary are NOT the Yoruba words for "SUN". They are entirely different words, and their diacritics are perfect. Cheers! |

Efesogie: Yea you're right am sick and tired quoting this guys my hands hurt and my eyes I doubt if such occurence even occured ,even it occured it is likely for the oba if it happened he was present to even show a form of respect to the oni as sympathy father to son but is very unlikely for your greatgrand dad to make such move he will be so irritated if such news even get to him As for the agho obaseki we know in history is very unlikely he wouke respect the ordeal.... I keep telling the Yoruba's that history is empty for them they shouldn't bother rewriting the little ones they made, because it will totally damage the ones they made ,and they will end up left with non to say at the end of the day , a yoruba person can never write ,Yoruba history without including benin to top it, If benin is not added the history wont have weight They keep using the oduduwa history to tire thier history to ours ,benins have made history leave it like that , the present world has giving yoruba upper hand to write a good history they never had but instead they rather remain slaves to the fulani people , Someone should tell them if benins had the population they have the fulanis would have longed pack to thier original homeland or the country would have been way longed divided by now |

Olu317: Yes, notice that the sign atop the letter "O" in "Orun" as shown in the dictionary is neither of the Yoruba sound diacritics, namely: "do", "re", or "mi". This specific sign (~) speaks to something entirely different from Yoruba sounds. It speaks to the choice (or freedom) to elongate the letter it's atop. Recall your argument with the other guy on "Aaro" or "Aro". Both are perfectly correct, and that's what the sign (~) relates to. This sign says nothing about how the letter should sound. Having said that, you had written the following earlier: "100% accurate that Sanmo is loaned from Arabic lexicon. The indigenous word for Orú (sun) is derived from ọrún(sky) which is interwoven with Orù(heat)... The boldened diacritics above actually doesn't correspond to the actual diacritics (not the elongation sign) specified in the attached dictionary. Cheers! |

gregyboy: Does the following look familiar to you?? This false Bini forgery and propaganda of the 1970s (that Oduduwa was one and the same person as a certain wandering Ekaladerhan) have been debunked, again and again, by historians the world-over. This myth has long been busted and have long been dismissed and forgotten in academia (as apocryphal, pseudo-historical, and unauthentic), except among Benin Nairalanders. For example, the world-renowned scholar and expert of Benin History, Dmitri M. Bondarenko, of the Institute for African Studies in the Russian Academy of Sciences, writes and I quote here: "Finally, there are the APOCRYPHAL versions of Benin oral tradition. ... (wherein) Ekaladerhan ... Some time later ... left Gwato for Ife." D. M. Bondarenko continues: "According to other versions of the kind, after leaving Gwato, Ekaladerhan founded another settlement, Ile-Ife and became her first ruler under the name of Oduduwa." After having thoroughly combed through the different versions of this Apocryphal account, D. M. Bondarenko wrapped up his assessment of this account by noting that: "However, a student of ancient Benin might feel obliged to REJECT the APOCRYPHAL versions without hesitation as deliberately UNAUTHENTIC. There are no their records made before the early 1970s ..." This Apocryphal and unauthentic account which says that Ekalederhan became king in Ife are non-existent before the 1970s, he said. He then puts the final nail in the coffin by submitting that: "There is no doubt that the APOCRYPHAL versions are NOT AUTHENTIC and are not popular. Their authors are representatives of the nationalistically-minded part of the Bini intelligentsia who are seeking to ground the idea of an exceptional antiquity for their people and claims for its exclusive part in the socio political life of independent Nigeria ... Behind such PSEUDOHISTORICAL studies by intellectuals, as if harmless, one can make out serious problems for the country ..." Refer for details to: Dmitri M. Trolls are low lives who have nothing going on in their lives, so they need a make-believe life on the internet in which they feel alive only when they can push someone to his limits and get emotional responses from the person or force him to hurt himself. The best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them. TAO11 is a troll. |

Yet we know that Benin kingdom paid homage to Ile-Ife. Refer to time-stamp 47:16 to 49:00 of the British Museum historical documentary below. The British Museum curator, who I'm dead sure is not a Yoruba, states clearly and unequivocally that the Obas of Benin kingdom paid homage to the sacred city of Ile-Ife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQY_Jd--pwI&t=2070s Enjoy! 2 Likes 1 Share |

TAO11:My knowledge on diacritics is based on French lexicon and I used that to presumably identify my accentuation even if it is seemingly seen as not conformable to you or others .Besides, I'm not a fan of Ajayi crowther's form of standardization that's not too accurate. All said and done. It is well. Cheers. |

We also know that Benin kingdom owes Ife some spiritual allegiance. We know that the Ooni (called Oghene by the Binis and called Ogané by the Portuguese) has the power to approve or disapprove a new Oba of Benin. Refer to the attached screenshots below with detailed referencing from 2 Likes 1 Share

gregyboy: If I had cited you the earliest and most prominent Benin historian, namely: Chief Jacob Egharevba ------ whose writing was to the same effect as the above ---- you will have reverted with the shameful and counterintuitive excuse that he was deliberately lying against his own Benin heritage because he did his first three or so primary school years in Yorubaland. If I had cited you any prominent Yoruba historian who agrees with what I have earlier found in the writings of these Western researchers, then your excuse would have been more obviously predictable. And I am left with the most fair and rational alternative of citing you a neutral and authoritative observer who has no stake in the superiority banter of the Yorubas and the Edos. Yet, that somehow wasn't fair. "Theriously!?" 2 Likes 1 Share

gregyboy: What about citing the work of the earliest and world-renowned indigenous Benin historian, Chief J. U. Egharevba, whose account shows that Ekaladerhan was exiled to Ughoton where he then lived and died?? Will that be neutral and fair to you? I don't seem to know any non-Nigerian African historian of ancient Benin. Moreover, the so-called "whiteman" visited Benin in as early as the late 1400s, and documented some Benin traditions that has formed the foundation of most of their works which I cite. 3 Likes 1 Share |
