Gwilym:Isn't this government taking the right steps at diversifying our economy? There's more gov't efforts at agriculture and its value chain lines. There's an increase in local production of goods that can be locally produced Investment in infrastructure has never been this focused on. This government is doing it's best abeg. Nigeria won't become the country of our dream overnight. 3 Likes 1 Share |

dashing07:I agree but we must moderate our expectations. In my reckoning, we need at least 30 years of continuous infrastructural development and diversification to come close to having a working country. Things have been bad for a very long time and no magic or miracle would make them good overnight even if we had all the money. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Larryfest: Because changing things for the better means doing things like removing fuel subsides, and allowing power companies to set the price of power in this country. This would bring about a much needed injection of cash and investment into the petrol and power sector, as well as jobs...which would indirectly long term transform our economy into a productive economy (We have already seen this in the telecoms sector....where Obasanjo allowed telecoms companies to exploit us...and they expolited us, and took our money, and reinvested it into our country in terms of jobs and telecom infrastructure. ) But because removing subsidies in energy and petrol sector means high prices for energy and petrol in the short term, and high food prices, we end up spending billions on subsidies which are targets of the corrupt for looting...meanwhile, the economy remains stagant, and job growth is stagnant...since industries don't have the power to operate. Whereas, if subsidy on petrol went...more refineries and supporting infrastructure would be built. If DISCOS and GENCOS were allowed to charge the prices they want...more investment would pour into power. Jobs would be created, government would save billions which could be used to help the poor and fund education and health, and the private sector would grow...all in return for an initial cost of high petrol prices, and high power prices. But most Nigerians don't want that. They want a government who shares money, and dishes out money, and patronage. They don't want to suffer. They want to enjoy. But the truth is, we are suffering....and if we are not courageous enough to take the bold steps we need to end the socialist style stagnation of our energy sector, we won't be going nowhere....and more people will continue in joblessness. The reason why many Nigerians praise GEJ or Bubu is because they benefit from the patronage....not because they are good leaders. 5 Likes |

PassingShot: Yes, all and good...but that's what governments from time immemorial have been doing (Obasanjo used to tout how he had raised cassava production, and under GEJ we went from no10 to no 5 in cocoa production...part of the reason why Adeshina is now AFDB boss.). But when you have price controls in the energy sector (DISCOS and GENCOS have their prices set for them by the government ) as well as the petrol sector (NNPC is in essence bankrupting itself to sustain a subsidy that is long past its sell by date..since 1993, and I'm not joking)...you stifle growth in power...which is needed to make our economy grow....and in the petrol sector (we have had over 60 licences issued for refinereis, and less than 5 are being built, Dangote aside...because people don't want to reifine fuel and sell at a loss in the name of subsidy).....because the chronic low prices means that there is no investment to build new power stations, to improve the transmission system, and (for petrol) no new refineres....which stifles industrial growth, and by extension jobs. If your Buhari had allowed the power sector and petrol sector set their prices for their products....yes, there would have been some hardship, but eventually the economy would have grown well well thanks to increased profits and investment. But he, and by extension no other leader is bold enough to do so. So, we suffer unnecessarily 5 Likes |

Gwilym:I am all for total deregulation. However, I will cut Buhari se slack given the circumstances he met on the ground. It would have been suicidal for his gov't to embark on such total removal of subsidies at a time many workers were owed salaries of up to 11 months in some cases. You don't do total deregulation when you're trying to get out of recession with many people losing jobs left, right and center. You do it when your economy is stabilized which I'm sure he would do sometimes next year or the year after when Dangote Refinery is on board, especially with the signing into law of the PIB. 2 Likes 1 Share |

PassingShot: GEJ's Agric minister, Adesina, the current ADB president was telling us same story about the boom in local production, the boom in Agriculture, food sufficiency and all. You see ehn, Agric sector is one area every govt tells you they are doing excellent. The only way to know who did better or worse is the pricing. Are foodstuffs and other commodities cheaper now than during GEJ's tenure? THE ANSWER IS NO! In fact, they are far more expensive now. Forget the barrage of lies from Buhari's govt . 6 Likes |

mikezuruki: You were never like me because you don't know me. I am for good governance. I supported buhari in 2015 and another candidate I know will not win in 2019 but got BIG ideas.... Not Atiku. So sentiments aside should mean that I can agree, disagree or just be neutral. I quoted you the first time because you assumed that people were being sentimental without any basis. So I was try to hazard a guess if your definition of being sentimental is not agreeing with you. 7 Likes |

PassingShot: Lol, Oga, I'm from a rice producing area. We have always been producing rice. Local rice has always been there over the years ... disguised as foreign rice by dealers/retailers. The only major difference now is the packaging and branding. There are more Nigerians now in the business of boldly packaging and branding local rice than before. Rice production itself has not increased as such. Agreed, branding and packaging has increased and hence, the proliferation of rice mills factories. We now hear of Lake Rice, Ifeanyi Ubah rice blah blah blah .... do they have rice farms? In most cases No! They merely buy from the usual local farmers, mill, package and brand. Technically, setting up a rice mill does not mean you are producing rice. Where is your rice farm? Has FG provided a good irrigation system to facilitate all year round rice farming? See, bro, 99% of the so-called rice farmers still do the usual seasonal annual farming when in Thailand, rice is planted and harvested three times a year. Stop swallowing Buhari's lies. FG should invest in irrigation. Effective irrigation is what sets Thailand apart in rice production . 8 Likes 2 Shares |

Staro: Thank you brother. Buhari and his govt like lies and propaganda. Nigerian rice farmers need irrigation not 10k trader money. This primitive seasonal rice farming is not the way to go. Why should one harvest rice in November and then wait till the rainy season in June/July of the following year to start planting. I read somewhere that Thailand plant and harvest rice every quarter (ie four times a year) 8 Likes 1 Share |

It may not be visible for all to see but things are going on behind the scene. Many politicians and civil servants are finding it difficult to loot 3 Likes |

It's an insult on Buhari to compare him with Jonathan. Jonathan is actually the worst president Nigeria has ever had if you measure the length of his tenure, the enormous available resources at hand then againsttheir impact on the country. Even Abacha had a better and more stable economy and the Jonathans stole more than the Abachas. Allegedly, he was youthful with the highest educational qualification among all our presidents. Yet nothing to show for it. Idiots continue to dignify him as their hero. What about that? Let him remain their hero joor 2 Likes 1 Share |
