For me, there's nothing like one course is better than the other. All are the best. None is useless.

Some courses are better.
Here in Naija, taking two average students as an example, one studying computer science, & d other geology.

Do you know that the one studying computer science is likely gonna be more successful??

*Work load: Most computer science students focus on their area of specialisation, while geologists take courses from almost all the departments

This in turn, leads to a total collapse of your GP if u're not strong

*Cost Of Project
Go and find out how much geologists spend on their final projects, compared to what computer scientist spend

* At the end, the person who did computer science can have a 2'1, while d geologist struggles with 2'2

Who do you think will have advantage at this stage?

*It doesn't end here... Now, a geologists must be a pro before you can be considered, & it's not something you can learn anywhere, unlike computer science..

Can you see the differences??

You dont need to be a billionaire before you can be considered successful

Lack of respect for a simple life and idolising money is what is messing up Nigerian society.

A pharmacist who can look after himself and send his children to school without selling fake drugs and inflating invoices so that he can can become a "billionaire" in order to feel among is okay by me and should be okay by anybody who is serious

You have spoken well

The collapse of this country is due to this craze for wealth

You don't know what you are saying. If you think someone that didn't study computer science and learnt programming or any IT skill will do better than someone that read computer science, then you are wrong. The knowledge of theory is a plus while learning the practical.
ThreeBlackBird:

Computer science is a waste of time. You don't have to be a computer science graduate to practice in that field. You simply need the knowledge and if really want to be grounded in the field, you are definitely not learning that within the four walls of the classroom. The rest is mathematics.

How did you come up with this your statistics? How many SSCE graduate can program an Operating system? Half Knowledge is dangerous. When a computer science graduate who programs, questions that your SSCE degree holder, you will be shocked that the so called SSCE degree holder don't know what he is doing. Like I said before, half knowledge is dangerous. That you code is running, doesn't mean it was written the best way, computer science graduates understands this
Kleenatics:

Then "Computer Science" is not the best course to study in Nigeria right now. An SSCE holder with programming skills is better off.

Stop decieving people here oga. If you studied computer science, you will always have 6months for IT which you can use to learn any skill you want. You stand a better chance of getting scholarship overseas with BSc in computer science than Diploma in programming.
FrLukas:
Don't waste your money attending a Nigerian University.

Go to NIIT or APTECH and get a diploma in programming. Java or Python and others.

Then search for schools abroad that'll offer you scholarship.

Nigerian certificates are usually useless and that's the truth.

Best to use the money to learn a handiwork or something that can actually be relevant to your life.

That way in 5/6 years time, you can employ graduates and master's degree holders and even PhD holders too.

You know what's up
etrange:

My dear, I don't agree.

Companies don't advertise for "courses". They simply describe the job duties and they are either general or specialised duties. Computer Science graduates (who took their courses seriously) have it good on both grounds. In the case of general duties, their knowledge of computer boosts their chances (though this doesn't make them any different). Regarding specialised duties, the demand for IT specialists is always on the high. How many times do you see a SAP developer or a Dynamics ERP programmer or a CRM technical consultant looking for job? These peeps are handpicked by headhunters.

Truth is Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Information Technology is one field that will forever remain in demand.

Computer scientist sighted
machiavelli95:

Don't say what you don't know. There is difference between being just able to type code and being a well grounded computer scientist. Concepts like abstraction, algorithm optimization to fitt processor capabilities, utilization of vector matrices for object representation, computer architecture cannot be learnt just like that. Why do you think computer science has a lot of mathematics? Do you think "computation" is beans? Even basic algorithms, the fact that your code runs doesn't mean that is the most efficient way to write that code. We can write different code to solve the same problem, both might work, but one will end up generating 10X more cache than the other and being 1000 times slower than the other.
When you see a seasoned computer scientist developing a custom programming language from first principle (not all the easy languages we have now, try writing in C, not C++, but C to have an idea) you will know its not beans

Abroad should be the first option, that's if you are financially capable

So is all that obtainable in Nigeria?

It seems that all the programming stuff is only taught properly abroad

I am sorry if you think it's easy to graduate with 2.1 in computer science. You will solve maths from year

You can learn those skills yourself and I don't think you can get scholarships from recognized schools abroad with a diploma from such institutions

it's d same thing I said... computer scientists focus on their area of specialisation, while as a geologist, u have to be an all-rounder...

..If you even compare geology & geography, it's easier to make a 2'1 in geography...& when shell & Chevron call for 2'1 holders, a geographer wl b considered.

You just showed you have no knowledge of programming what so ever. In programming, you can't proceed an inch without understanding the basics of programming theoretically. As a matter of fact, if you don't even have a good knowledge of mathematics, you'll fail from the start.

Only a few universities in Nigeria offer computer science in a reasonable fashion. I was shocked to the marrow the day I was told a department in U.I. still writes codes on paper. Many Nigerian schools don't have facilities to run the programme. They write code on paper which eventually can't be debugged. You'll be surprised to know many computer science students don't even have laptops. They can't even lunch Microsoft visual studio successfully.

Go to Andela, the place where Mark Zuckerberg visited when he came to Nigeria, who are their best programmers and you would realize they don't have a degree in computer science. In fact, when recruiting, the degree is not a requirement.

The lecturers that teach the computer courses nko?
Some with outdated knowledge whose main aims are just to write and publish textbooks to get to the next level or to make money. Some can't even do the simplest of things on their phones, some cant even download an app sef let alone building one.
Lecturers still stuck with 80's knowledge.
