The Borno State Government has said about 1,400 repentant Boko Haram suspects have been released by the military and rehabilitated into society.

The Borno State Commissioner for Information, Babakura Jato, told The PUNCH during an interview on Monday that 1, 400 had been released in three tranches since the ‘Operation Safe Corridor’ programme began.

The PUNCH reports that although the programme began in 2016, it wasn’t until 2018 that the release of the suspects began.

Jato said most of the persons released were not actually Boko Haram members but were relatives of terrorists or persons found in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The commissioner said, “There have been a series of releases. They were released in three tranches. The first set was released during Governor Shettima’s time while two sets have been released under Prof. Zulum.

“The total number of persons released is 1,400. Out of the 1,400, the majority of them are cleared suspects. These were people who were suspected of being members of Boko Haram and it was discovered that they were not.

“The rest are children of Boko Haram or actual Boko Haram members. I cannot give you a breakdown of the figure now for security reasons.”

The government’s spokesman said he was aware of allegations that some of those released had gone back to terrorism but argued that most of these allegations were mere speculations.

Jato said after the training, they were handed over to the Borno State Government for proper integration into their communities.

He stated that if any person was rejected by his community for being a former Boko Haram member, the government would resettle that person.

When asked if there were recorded cases of someone going back to join Boko Haram, he said, “I have not heard of that but we have had cases whereby people in the community rejected them. So, they return to the rehab centres and we change their location.”

Meanwhile, the President, Military Widows Association, Mrs Vera Aloko, has expressed satisfaction with the Operation Safe Corridor programme.

Aloko said military widows would support anything that would restore peace.

She said, “It is true that our Vice-President, Mrs Idith Opesanmi, faulted the Federal Government’s decision to release more repentant Boko Haram members. However, she spoke in her personal capacity and not for all military widows. We support the government and any policy that can restore peace.”

Do You see how stupid these people are. When we say that the government of APC of Fulanis are behind this terrorist? They think we are hateful.

I do not pity the North at all. Go and find out this, you can never go to any cell in Nigeria and see a Fulani man their even if he commits murder.

These people will use their hands and destroy the North and Nigeria. The lord is fighting the battle for us but people don't see it that way.

By the time this people are done with the north, we will realize that God has used the Bokoharam to fight our war for us.

Do you see how the Arabs destroyed their cities, during the Arab spring? Almost all the Arab countries we're killing themselves from Egypt to Syria, Yemen Tunisia and many more of them destroyed their Cities and killed the own people while Israel was peace in their country. that was God fighting their battle

Do not cry for the North. The North is gone. The caliphate of Boko haram will overrun them soon.

Why the south will eventually emerge as a new nation without a war. Do not be afraid. Most of their politicians don't step into their villages until drill election year.

They cannot visit their people. The north is gone!

The Quran , chapter 9 ( At-Tawba ), verses 2–6:

So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four
months (2) ... So if you repent, that is best for you; ... And give
tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment. (3) ...
Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the
polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in
anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them
their treaty until their term [has ended]. (4) ... And when the sacred

This has always been Buhari's intention going by his statements b4 he got to power.
Remember he said a fight against boko haram is injustice, that why should they be fought and killed when Niger delta militants were enjoying amnesty.
I'm very ashamed to be called a Nigerian at these times.
It's a pity how Nigerians including those who should know better gathered, elected and reelected a character like Buhari.

This is d problem. U catch a hardened criminal all of a sudden he claims he has repented and he is enrolled into rehabilitation. Cos he is Fulani he will be released back into d society as a repentant Boko Haram or even absorbed into d military. He comes back and continues from where he stopped knowing fully well some form of immunity hovers around him. Meanwhile Southerners with relatively minor criminal offences are locked up in awaiting trial detention and forgotten. The deceit in this govt is very obvious. Buhari's Fulanization agenda is clear and he has never pretended about it.

Widows of slain military officers and soldiers particularly those fighting the war against terrorism have protested the continuous release of murderous Boko Haram terrorists on the grounds that they have repented.

It will be recalled that more than 2,000 so-called repentant Boko Haram terrorists who murdered, raped, publicly executed both Muslims and Christians, castrated soldiers, burnt military locations and carried out suicide bombings in places of worship have been released back into the society through a programme, Operation Safe Corridor.

There is a general belief that most of the insecurity being peddled in different parts of the country including kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling and other robbery activities may be perpetrated by some of the so-called repentant Boko Haram criminals.

shocked This government is so callous & insensitive. So despite the pleas of the poor widows of troops lost to this war, the Nigerian Military & government are still recycling these BH terrorists?

Do you know how many people these killers have send to the other side of life that this evil, wicked & satanic Buhari-led APC regime is releasing them? May it never be well with anyone associated with this government including all the zombies.

You release terrorists but detain people who protest against your government even when the court grants them bail. Guess what? There's nothing we the southerners can do about it.

And you say US should not ban us?

You release terrorists and say they have repented.

Who gauged their repentance?

How are you sure not one of the 1400 is still radical since this is a thing of an idea?

We told fools that Buhari had an agenda. But they were deceived by the flimsy façade of a cow worn a suit by Southwest press.

Today they are forming Amotekun.

This is one the weird things that happen in this country which makes me very sad,I keep wondering what the government priorities are with regards to this insurgency.
How can you be releasing deadly terrorists back into the society in the name rehabilitation? This is something USA and co that have been fighting terrorists for years have never ever contemplated, yet here we are deceiving our selves. Please the government should also rehabilitate and release all the armed robbers,Yahoo boys, kidnappers, ritualists and every other persons sentenced to prison for one crime or the other.

Welcome to Nigeria, where journalists are jailed for doing their jobs and terrorists are feted, wined and dined and released to continue their killing and raping spree.

*Me, waiting patiently for Nigeria to break up.
