Robert Clarke, a senior advocate of Nigeria, says death sentence will not stop corruption because the act of stealing runs in the blood of Nigerians.

In an interview with the Punch, the lawyer said good governance remains the solution to curbing corruption and improve the economy.

He said corruption is strengthened by the perception of some Nigerians who view political positions as a “money-spinning venture”.

“Whether it is capital punishment or not, a crook would always be a crook. Most of these things are in the blood,” he said.

“Somebody who wants to steal has it in the blood and some Nigerians have imbibed the custom of believing that when they are working for government, they are there to steal. If you are made a commissioner tomorrow, all your relations are looking forward to getting contracts from you.

“So, we believe it’s a money-spinning venture. Sentencing people to death will not stop people from stealing. it’s in the blood of Nigerians to steal. Once there is good governance, the propensity to steal would reduce.”

Clarke called for the abolition of death sentence, saying most governors refuse to ensure its effectiveness as a result of their religious beliefs.

He recommended a minimum of 20 years imprisonment as an alternative to capital punishment.

“When a mechanic has power supply to work in his workshop and a tyre repairer has electricity to do his job, when will he have the time to dupe others? Nigeria is so great, with about 200 million people,” he said.

“Can you imagine if we have one singlet and briefs factory in Nigeria? Do you know the market it would have? We import everything. Whereas if most of our politicians who are stealing money can set up singlet and pants factories in every geo-political zone, the market is there, but we all just believe in stealing.

“We should abolish death sentence and make it a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment. I believe somebody who killed at the age of 36 and is sentenced to 20 years and comes back at the age of 56 should have learnt a lesson, rather than keep them there.

“Some are afraid to sign a death warrant or they have religious phobia that you shouldn’t take life when you don’t make one. Then, let us agree to cancel death penalty in our books and make it 20 years’ imprisonment.”

The system made us this bad. meet Nigerians in saner climes and watch them succeed legally. The naija system is so messed up.everyone has learnt that no one is for anyone.. we learnt that there are few people you can turn to for help and opportunity, we become greedy when entrusted with fortune for the fear of poverty.. the poor are trying to elevate themselves from it while the rich are dead scared of returning to it.

c[b]Cutting the head is not the best cure for headache. Nigeria has some minor problems and most often we usually mistaken then for the major problem(s). In essence if we assume corruption is one of the major problems then we are stuck with the next problem to solve after combating corruption of which we may be clueless about and we keep moving in cycles without any progress.

If you agree with me, CORRUPTION is not the Major problem with Nigeria. if you say POWER ELECTRICITY, is the major or one of the major problems then we will be left with with problems of "How much power to be generated and how to generate it? How much cost will it take to make the plans realistic? We still end up in the conformed of the circles.

Before I give the major problem(s) with Nigeria I will give a short illustration of a student having to take a lecture in a crowded class and was left outside with no chair nor table. He decided to go source for it and after making arrangements, he found out that he couldn't hear what the lecturer says because he was far away from the lecturer. He go get an address system for the lecturer only for the student to realise he didn't have a pen to jot. After seeking for pen and trying to comprehend what the lecturer was saying, he decided to simply ask a close colleague and finally he realises the class wasn't meant for him. May be he doesn't need to go through all this process in his designated class but hear, the student already wasted time, and human resources solving problem that doesn't need attention for.

This is Nigeria situation until we can identify the MAJOR PROBLEM we will only keep moving in cycles. Sometimes the minor problems looks like a major one and the major problem might be there unnoticed. I have given clues for Nigerian to figure out the major problem and tackle it.

I rest my pen.

Not BLOOD but part of their GENETIC MAKEUP
CORRUPTION is found on the Long Arm of Chromosome P419, found only in the blacks.

TREATMENT;
GENETIC Sampling, Abortion and Ablution.

I disagree. If you know the hangman's noose awaits you for stealing, you would run away from it. That is harsh though but more tougher terms are required for those that steal

Sad truth.
Back in the day, while they were executing armed robbers at the Bar beach, pickpockets mingled with the crowd and stole from them while soldiers were executing thieves.

Look at those in Abia state. They gave them kerosene to drink which is poisonous. Yet, they reelected the person who gave them kerosene to drink. Right now, kerosene has become part of their diet.

Can we at least start first and let's see?

All these are excuses not to start. Theft is not inside anyone's blood. It's because we don't have sterner laws that we're where we are now.

When Asians found it was difficult curbing corruption, they introduced capital punishment and death. Now they're better for it.

Let us start first. Stealing is not in my own blood!

Theres nothing in the blood of anybody, it is mind and societal conditioning. We have conditioned our minds and society that the only way to achieve anything or make it is through corruption.

Our systems and examples of successful people in society are now corrupt people, specifically politicians not even business men.

Corrupt politicians who are now the major examples the youths look up to was what inspired/created yahoo.

It was never like this b4, it is a SOCIETAL DECAY of Corruption and InDiscipline brought about single handedly by our stupid politicians only.

Death sentence on certain amount levels of corruption and lengthy prisons sentences will go along way to deter corruption in governance which has destroyed this country.
