‘Hmm’! As a nurse, I’ve been asked this question yet again. Usually, I am always careful not to give destructive information to my patients and friends alike.

Just as the case may be, certain practices may not be right for your health. So is the case of a needless douching.

Are you still wondering why? Read on!

Ever heard the saying ‘the vagina is a self-cleansing organ’? Yes! True it is! That keeps me wondering whose idea it was to invent the douche anyway.

However, today’s post packs a plethora of information on why you should take to heart the alternatives and ditch the harmful practice.

Its not recommended at all because

1. The benefits have no scientific supporting evidence.

2. The disadvantages outweighs the perceived benefits.

Douche is a french word for washing or cleansing and the vagina has a way to naturally clean itself of any unwanted organisms or substances.

Most women use various techniques to douche their vagina and some includes the use of antiseptic liquid substances to wash up and this is danngerous because it alters the normal bacterial flora of the vagina by killing the organisms and making it favorable for other foreign bacteria to invade, occupy and cause disease.


This is the number one disadvantage of douching and can predispose to vaginal infections, pelvic inflammatory diseases PID, and cancer.

Vaginal douching can also cause pregnancy abnormalities like ectopic pregnancy and difficulty getting pregnant.

Douching is never effective in preventing pregnancy after sex. During ejaculation the sperm is jetted into the body with the speed of light. Besides, sperm as you may know can swim. They are living cells remember? And are released in millions , whereas only one is need for fertilization. You can wash out a million but you'll not wash all over 200 million sperm cells. As a matter of fact . douching can even aid in pregnancy and the dilution of the acidity of the vagina aids sperm survival in the harsh acidic environment.
