For the last time. In the early colonial era, Yoruba chiefs like the ooni of ife were referred to as "ooni of ife, sir sijuade". Notice the use of the word "sir", a foreign word, a British word meant to attach Yoruba monarchy to that if Britain and bring in a sense of greatness into it. Later on in the colonial era, pan Africanism was popular so the Yoruba replaced the word "sir" with the title of the emperor of Benin and it became: "ooni of ife, Oba sijuade". Yoruba don't have any such thing as Oba, it is borrowed from Benin empire. Unless ife, oyo were not kingdoms but dukedoms, the ife word for king is ooni and the oyo word for king is alafin. There is no ancestral general Yoruba word for king due to the fact Yoruba is a new tribe created by regrouping many other tribes. 3 Likes |

For the last time. Another dvmb comment from the illiterate self-acclaimed nursery school match teacher whom I forced to delete his many nairaland accounts. (1) "Sir" was added to the address of Oba Adesoji Aderemi by virtue of his doubling as the Governor of Western Nigeria. (2) For the umpteenth time, the word "Ọba" is not present at all in the Edo lexicon till today. I still wonder how Edo people gave what they don't have. (3) The closest words to "Ọba" from the Edo lexicon are words which: (i) Are spelt differently. (ii) Sound differently. (iii) Have different meanings with nothing to do with monarchy. (4) In the Yoruba language, in contrast, the word "Ọba" literally means: "One who reigns-supreme". It becomes clear that this particular word was loaned from the Yoruba language into Edo. See also attachment below from D.M. Bondarenko' (5) Just like the word "Pharaoh" (lit. "The Great House"), words like "Ooni" (lit. "The One who Owns"), "Alaafin" (lit. "The Principal One of the Palace"), etc. obviously DO NOT literally mean "King", "Monarch", etc. They, however, apply exclusively to the monarchs of these respective kingdoms --- that is, ancient Egypt, Ife, Oyo respectively. These words are the unique royal titles for the monarchs of these respective kingdoms. They run alongside the common noun for "King" in the respective languages --- "Ọba" being the Yoruba equivalent. (6) Your dvmb claim that Yoruba is a recent tribe is similar to saying that "Benin" or "Edo" is a tribe created in the 1500s/1600s because these words were not used prior to then. (7) The ancestral generic Yoruba word for "King" "Ọba" was loaned into the Edo lexicon beginning with the Oranmiyan/Eweka dynasty. (8 ) The ancestral generic umbrella terms with which all Yoruba subgroups collectively identify themselves before the word "Yoruba" was adopted were: "Lukumi" and "(A)Nago", and later "Aku". The word "Yoruba" used to be applied exclusively to the Oyo subgroup. 1 Like 2 Shares

Moreover, this same reference to the French Father's 1640 account (of the use of Yoruba language as Benin Kingdom's lingua-franca) is also cited by Professor R.C.C. Law on page 209 of his "Ethnicity and the Slave Trade". Cheers!

TAO12: It never said it was spoken in the benin palace or by benins Benin as we known was the only detailed geographical area best to describe the southern nigeria area. the french only used benin as a relative location rather than absolute location to describe thier statement as it was the only known area and the best location to describe the other various areas Example people in calabar are cannibals" mind you calabars aren't cannibals, but a clan in cross over that are cannibal, calabar is used in the statement as a relative location because it is more known by people absolute location will be that very location those cannibal clans are found |

Edeyoung: Lol ... You talk too much! (1) "THEIR language" (i.e. the language of "the people" of Benin Kingdom) is Lucumin language. Strangely, this to you means the language of some anonymous non-Bini minorities. Lol. (2) Learn the meaning of "lingua-franca" and consider the attached page I earlier mentioned. I 'pray' that God will someday direct you to an accptable face-save excuse.

Re: Benin Kingdom In Edo State Remained Part Of The Expansive Yoruba - Ooni Of Ife by Edeyoung: 4:32pm On Jun 03, 2020 |
TAO12: The fact it mentioned lucumies were employed in benin palace activities makes it already known that lucumies were distinct people from the benins..... Areas surrounding benins still speak Yoruba (lucumies language today) The yorubas such as Itsekiris ijebu and the whiteman used to trade in benin river and this people spoke the lucumies language and it was universal to them Gregyboy screenshot further explains it.... |
Re: Benin Kingdom In Edo State Remained Part Of The Expansive Yoruba - Ooni Of Ife by TAO12: 7:25pm On Jun 03, 2020 |
Edeyoung: Yes lucumies are distinct people from Binis. I'm surprised you're just realizing that. But that's even only one aspect of the whole thing. The issue here, however, is about the lingua-franca of BENIN Kingdom being the language of the lucumies. The documentation does not talk about the language of the "areas surrounding Benin" ... lol ... neither does it talk about the language of the "Itsekiri" ... lol... nor does it talk about the language of the Ijebu ...lol. It clearly refers specifically to the language (lingua-franca) of Benin Kingdom being the Yorubas' language. See the attachments once again for a reminder. 1 Share

Re: Benin Kingdom In Edo State Remained Part Of The Expansive Yoruba - Ooni Of Ife by Edeyoung: 8:10pm On Jun 03, 2020 |
TAO12: Like i maintained earlier benin was the known geographic focal point that's why, it came into the statement it was never included as speaker of lucumies as you are saying Sandov didn't mention lucumies as a language in benin even when he reported the actvites of the palace We knew the yorubas came to trade with the whiteman at the benin river at ughoton and Gelegele so the yorubas traders spoke thier language lucumies while trading at benin So the french was not wrong..... Today we still speak edo and yorubas still speak yoruba if benin spoke Yoruba why did they switch why only them.... If we are to go by your explanation 2 Likes |

(2) Edeyoung: The report says that the language/lingua-franca of Itsekiri and Ijebu is the Yoruba language. No, the report doesn't say 2 anywhere. TAO12: No sense bro, If benins spoke lucumies language what changed, yorubas still speak lucumie today why only did edo change Or was the french classifying all languages around the benin region as lucumies.... Or was the french man high.... What changed lucumies language in benin to edo language Sadov gave a clear example that the lucumies were slaves in the palace and were still sold off by benins to the the whiteman as slaves 1 Like |

Edeyoung: Your questions (regardless of how many they are) has zero power to erase the clear content of the report. If you may also ask: How did many European countries gradually dis-adopt Latin as lingua-franca and re-focused on their own indigenous languages? Questions like this wouldn't alter (even slightly) any historical fact about its former adoption. The content of the report therefore remains unchanged. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1) The Report: The language/lingua-franca of Benin is the Yoruba language. (2) Edeyoung: The report says that the language/lingua-franca of Itsekiri, Ijebu, and some places outside Benin is the Yoruba language. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- No, the report doesn't say 2 anywhere. For all sane persons with zero inferiority complex, the report says 1 plainly. Anyways, you may continue to hold on to your plain opposite if you think it helps you sleep at night (especially during these tough times). I can't force you into sanity. Neither can I force sanity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Having said that, I like to remind you that Ibadan for many, many years raided Benin Kingdom for slaves while sacking many territories of Benin Kingdom. This is also an entirely different scenario from how Benin City was at the mercy of Ogedengbe Agbogungboro of Ilesa. I hope this helps kill your bigotry! 2 Likes 1 Share |

TAO12:. Nobody (including scholars/historians) acknowledges this rubbish you wrote as significant enough to study or research.. it’s not true or even if it was, it played no role at all in affecting Benin Kingdom in any way so no attention is paid to this. However there are numerous books and studies detailing Benin conquests and colonization of the Yoruba people. That is a forever “stain” on your seemingly great history lol. And for your foolish talk about Benin speaking Yoruba, that is a big lie. It is not written anywhere that Benin spoke Yoruba. But however it is well documented that the Edo language was spoken and understood to some great degree in many parts of Yorubaland. This will be due to the fact that the Edo language was the language of your first colonial masters. |
