My takeaways from this topic

1. For safety reasons, individuals should have the customer care nos of their bank in a place it can be easily accessed if the need arises e.g like the man who was able to block two of his accounts after the criminals collected his ATM Cards

2. Banks should have a unit that work with security Agents in tracking criminals.

3. Businesses whose PoS are stolen/missing should report to the bank as a matter of urgency.

4. Banks should carry out due diligence before issuing PoS to a business.

Its quite simple...the cashiers of the stores ..or thier staff loan it out to the robbers at night...they just use the card to verify pins...

this country..

I don't believe the above.

You can buy your own POS on Nairaland.

There is one POS seller that sells for 25k on here.

na so. every dick, tom and harry have access to ATM. even police on checkpoints

That's not a POS. The card he's inserting is clearly an ID card. He's likely validating driving licenses or national ID cards

This is a no brainer issue that requires a simple fix.

All funds paid or transferred to a POS linked account should be made unavailable or kept in lien for 3 working days, will only be cleared for withdrawal or transfer after 3 working days.

That’s how’s it done in some advanced countries, even in some countries it 7 working days, some 1 month.

I don’t know why simple things are so difficult in our country.

What you wrote is not feasible, legally speaking, it is not correct to withhold people's funds for some days without any legal order from the court.. Try that in Nigeria and you will spend your days in court.

Moreso, for those who are into agency banking, which I believe we have a good number of youths in our society engaged in it. They use the funds in their accounts for their day to day transactions . Placing a lien on such accounts will put a strain on their economic activity.

Proper tracking of those fraudulent POS transactions can be done by getting relevant information on such accounts from the bank by the police.

Seems people don't seriously read to understand.

It is written there that, the robbers mostly used the POS to check the PIN before proceeding to withdraw the fund on other channels before day breaks.

The state of anomie that Nigeria has become is at full flow. The financial sector has become the foil for criminal activities in recent times. Organised cyber crimes between bankers and cyber criminals ,and of course ,with armed bandits is going on.How do you explain a situation where someone calls your name on a cell phone with precision, if the there was no collabo with the banking system?
The government pretends to effectiveness ,but in real terms is worse than useless. How can you lock down an economy that has to be serviced daily for four weeks? Is it for lack of imagination? And how can a government be so prostrate against a marauding, but pretentiously-equipped gangs of idiotic street urchins called, One Million Boys, OmoKesari- Children of Ceasar,Awawa Boys and No Salary Boys?
What is happening now only underscores the notion that this fallen nation- hapless, buffeted and gang-raped endlessly- is being led by accidents of history, unfortunates and self-seeking imposters, who expose the masses to the spilling over of the anger of criminals.

We need to follow through with accountability.
Report to the bank. Follow up with a police report. Get a court order to debit the fraudsters account. The bank will honour a court order.
You don't expect the bank to just go chasing people who handle POS transactions.
You do your part too.

The thief only use the pos to verify the card pin. They didn't use it to transfer or make transactions.

A POS robber can be arrested, The only reason they are not being arrested is that the Bank is a conspirator, Abroad. every transaction can be traced, Even if you buy in a store with stolen dollars pound or euro, The Police abroad knows how to find you
The unfortunate situation in Nigeria is that the NIGERIAN POLICE ARE CRIMINALS, they have been reoriented in Corruption and the Police in Nigeria loves and live by crime because the government is corrupt.

A lot of police men have build houses with proceed of corruption, fed family with proceed of corruption
It is a normal lifestyle in the Nigerian force to steal.
when the country is ready for a change, the entire Nigerian Police force will be proscribed and the new Police will be from secondary school or University with High tech training
But this cannot happen when the Country is still under the Tyranny of Backward Hausa Fulani

The country must break away from the Hausa who are backward and have continued to draw the rest of the region backward to have a standard development
Nigeria has been stunted since Shagari

Don't people realize that they can use the card management utility of their mobile banking app to control the channel (ATM,web or PoS) on which their cards are used? Eg if you don't want your card to be used on an ATM, you simply turn off that channel and turn it on when you need to

. They don't Rob with the POS, they only use it to confirm that you gave them your correct pin number. They will proceed to any nearest ATM machine to withdraw.

Then that will increase kidnapping. Only after the funds are cleared before they release the victims.
Nigeria needs a completely new system. Things do not work in Nigeria like in other places.
Maybe a secret additional code ATM owner must add to clear the funds. But unknown to armed robbers. If PIN is xxxx, then extra yz must follow to authenticate. But the machine won't prompt you to add it. Yet the machine senses that the missing extra figures means something is wrong.

Though the funds will seem moved. But without the secret extra code it will be held for days.
But banking insiders may leak the secret to armed robbers too.

Something unique needs to be done. Biometric won't cut it. Because robbers will make victims do everything. Unless biometric that senses physiological stress too. And hold up the funds for days first.

You people are not getting it, the robbers are not using the pos to withdraw money they use it to check if the ATM PIN no is correct, then they will go to the nearest ATM bank and empty your account, what should be done is to put adequate 24hrs security camera in all ATM points, any transaction of such nature can then be captured then using the time and date the robbers will be apprehended.
