The 2019 Poverty & Inequality in Nigeria report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday says 82.9 million Nigerians are living in poverty.

This figure represents 40.09% of the total population.

According to the report, 52.10% of rural dwellers are living in poverty while the poverty rate in urban centres is 18.04%.

The last poverty data released by the NBS was in 2010 when 60.9% of the population was living in poverty.

At the time, the country’s total population was 112.4 million translating to 68.4 million people living in poverty.

The NBS, together with the World Bank, used the Nigerian living standards survey (NLSS) to measure poverty and living standards between September of 2018 and October of 2019.

The NLSS measured poverty using the consumption expenditure rather than income.

“The consumption aggregate is the monetary value of food and non-food goods and services consumed by the household,” the report read.

“Thus, the consumption aggregate has the following component: expenditure on food from all sources, schooling and education expenditure, healthcare expenditure, housing expenditure, non-food expenditure like clothing and recreation.”

In June 2018, Brookings Institution said Nigeria has overtaken India as the poverty capital of the world.

The institution had estimated that the number of Nigerians in extreme poverty increases by six people every minute.

Not surprised. The present government emphasize more on her citizens been poor than the citizens prosperity. Until their is deliberate policy to turn the tides, poverty rate will get to 100m

Imagine Nigeria running thesame failed system after this Pandemic

Poverty rate will be around 60%.

Lekki and most urban resident will join the statistics too.

I hope those in power are making plans already cause they are too short sighted. Now, we should be asking what is the plan to rebuild this rotten country after this Pandemic

I think the poverty rate in most urban areas are often underestimated, while the poverty rate in rural areas are often overestimated in Nigeria.

This is a result of the definition of poverty which places emphasis on living below a certain amount of money daily

However, the fact that the cost of living in most Nigerian cities are almost 100% higher than most rural areas in Nigeria is often neglected.

How much did you have in your bank account... if you're not roaming around begging for money or food doesn't mean you are satisfied.

Would it not be nice if comments are made with some level of objectivity rather than our rose-coloured glasses tainted with prejudice? This is what the article said:
--
"The last poverty data released by the NBS was in 2010 when 60.9% of the population was living in poverty."
---
Not that I believe their phony 40% figure. I believe the numbers are much worse than that even before the lockdowns.

The data is a fabrication against the reality.

I doubt the accuracy and ingenuity of the data. Over 120m Nigerians are poor and that's the basic truth !

I think because poverty is defined as having below a certain amount of money.

However, the fact that the cost of living in most Nigerian cities are almost 100% more than most rural areas in Nigeria is often neglected.
