Jesus was the first to use the term 'born again' in the bible in John chapter 3. Many people laugh or make a mockery of the term or simply dismiss it as a fairy tale.
But what does it mean to be born again?

John 3:3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

To be born again mean,

To be born of water and the Spirit.

Alot of people think the water represent water baptism but it clearly does not mean water baptism.
Water baptism was only an outward representation of what really happened when one is bornagain

The water represents the word of God which is the gospel

The Spirit is the Holy Ghost.

Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;


To be bornagain also means to be born of God or inother term born of the Spirit and also of the word means for one to be regenerated by the obedience of the Ghost and the action of the Holy Ghost in a man.


What makes one born again is the word of God which is the seed and the Holy Ghost which is the life giver.

1 Peter 1:23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

This word is indestructible, hence last forever.
Indestructibility is a one of the quality of God.
Word is the logos, it is the seed from this new creature is formed unlike Adam that was made from clay.
The new creation is made of the word, this word abides in the new creation forever.

The second Agent is the Spirit, The Holy Spirit gives the life hence called the Spirit of life.
The Holy Spirit gives the new creation the awareness of the new life he now possesses.

Salvation is not all about going to heaven like some ignorantly thinks, it is about having the life of God and the attendant glory.


Romans 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

This new life the new creation have is called eternal life.

1 John 1:2
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us; )

1 John 5:11
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

In this passage John boldly said that eternal life was a life we get in the hear and now not somewhere in the future or when we die.

Infact for the new creature death do not decide their fate rather their fate had already being decided when they were born (reborn).

Where then is the place of good works, or any other works for that matter?
The answer is there is no place in terms of salvation.
Jesus said our first birth is not enough we need to be reborn.

Galatians 6:15
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

What are the evidences or sign that one is born again?

Matthew 7:17
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Matthew 7:18
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

The type of works a man produces is a pointer to whether he or she is born of God or not, you cannot expect or force out a good tree from a bad fruit and vice versa.
When a fruit is bad, it is because the tree is bad, so the only way to get a good fruit is from a good tree.

Some of the evidence of a regenerated man are

1.Love for God, and love for the belivers.

1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.

This love originated from God and reflected from the believer to God and the his fellow believer.

1 John 5:1
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

1 John 4:8
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 4:12
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

The evidence of Regeneration is Love,
He loves God meaning that he keeps the commandment of God out of love not out of fear, and he loves his fellows.

He loving his neighbor means he easily forgive any wrong doing and making sacrifices to ensure the happiness of his neighbour.

Any body that does not love , I mean total and in depth love for a Christian is not born of God, this is not love for denomination or love for sect but love for those who believe on Jesus the Son of God.


2. Obeying Jesus commandments,

1 John 2:4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 3:22
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 3:24
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Anybody that does not care or live in disregard to Jesus' commandment is not born of God.

3. Admittance to sin or iniquity,
1 John 1:8, 10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

When one lives in denial of his or her sinfulness he or she is not born of God.

A trait of a man who is born of God is that he will not hide his sins but confess them to God for forgiveness.


4 He does not live in sin.

1 John 5:18
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

It is unnatural for fishes to live on land, it is unnatural for a bornagain to live in sin.

Note not that a born again does not fall into sin but he will not remain put in sin like those who does not know God.

5. The fruit of the Spirit is present in his life.

Galatians 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

The fruit of the Spirit is completely manifest in his life.
Note paul said the fruit not the fruits which means there is only one fruit of the spirit but it is revealed in these complete characters.

The Fruit of the holy Spirit is not what one practice it is what the result of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the new creature.

These are just a few of the evidences of the born again believer.

When a man is living in sin with total disregard to the Lord and in denial of his sin,
When lives in sin as natural home or has has hatred especially for the believers of Jesus.
When a man does not obey the commandments of Jesus,
When a man is devoid of God's righteousness in his life.
It is evidence that such a man is not born again or born of God.


There are instances a man who is born again live like the man who has not the life of God.

This happens when he is walking in the flesh meaning he is not living according to his Spiritual identity.
The Spiritual identity of the new creature is that
1. He is no longer a sinner but he has being made right with God.
2. He is Holy
3. He now has Christ living in him.
4. He is a representative of Christ on earth
This is but a few.

What might cause a believer not to walk in his Spiritual identity?
1.False doctrines, This is a topic on it's own right.
2. Lack of spiritual insight of their new nature.

What happens when a believer doesnt walk in the Spirit?
He begins to fulfill the lust of the flesh,

Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

From God's end He has equipped the believer with the ability to overcome any lust, through his word and Spirit.

So the believer is to put on Jesus Christ (meaning his new identity) to overcome every day to day temptation, sin or lust.

Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

The christian life is one of continuous walk in Christ but one thing is sure, Victory at last.

1 John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

God keeps the believer

John 6:39
And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

But on this other side of the veil the believer should walk in walk circumspectly as children of day not night.

Romans 13:12-14 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

For the believer in other to walk in the newness of life he need to renew his mind

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The new man has to be renewed after the image of him that created it.


Ephesians 4:23
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Colossians 3:10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

The only way a born again can fall is when he is disconnected from the source of his life (Jesus).

Hence the believer is urged to knowledge to keep add to his faith.

2 Peter 1:5
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

2 Peter 1:6-8 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Note the Christian growth is a growth towards Christ image.

This growth includes putting away some old characters
Ephesians 4:25
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Ephesians 4:31
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:


It includes putting on some characters


Romans 13:12
The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Ephesians 4:24
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

walking in the Spirit the key to victory.
In all aspect of our lives walking in the Spirit gives us the victory.
It takes us from the realm of men, it us from the domain where satan rules and precedes to where God sits and rules.

To walk in the Spirit is to walk by faith.

1 John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

If we are not walking by faith then we are not walking in the overcomers victory.

See God has given us the victory in Christ, it is just for us to live in the reality of it.

1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Paul urged Timothy to lay hold on eternal life

What could this mean?

Look at this verses

Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

1 Thessalonians 5:8
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

To lay hold on eternal life is the same as putting on the helmet of salvation

It means we should always be cautious of the fact that we have eternal life.
To hold means to get a grip, In the bible the believe is urge to take a solid grip at the hope of your salvation, let nothing Robb you of the boldness, Joy and hope.
When a believer is Robbed of his Joy and hope he has then he has begin to fall.

Hebrews 6:11
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

It is the will God that a believer continue in the assurance of hope till the end

Take note, A believe should have nothing to do with uncertainty of his salvation.

1 John 5:13
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Unfortunately the devil is working so hard to rob believers of the joy of salvation, he works with may false prophets, preachers and so on.

2 Corinthians 11:13
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

Galatians 2:4
And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

The galatian church was hit by this attack, an attack that seeks to take away the liberty of the believer.
What was this attack?
It was an attack on the grace on the gospel

Galatians 1:6-7 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

The issue was that some false brethrens perverted the gospel of Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ is clear, salvation is by faith in Jesus and his work on the cross as a substitute for our sins
But some people has added to it, if you dont do this, if you dont do that you cant be saved, this made some belivers to fall from grace.

Galatians 5:4
Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

To fall from grace is to start adding something toor removing something from the gospel.
Adding works, adding Angel's or saints, church or anything in addition to Jesus.

Removing from the gospel like denying the death or resurrection of Jesus, limiting the sacrifice of Jesus just for Adamic sins and not present sins, separating bornagain from salavation, segmenting salvation to different part where, the sacrifice of Jesus does one part for us and we do another part.

Corrupting the gospel of Christ to promoting Sinning so as to make it look like the gospel is a license for Sinning in other to discredit it.

The devil has being working in a number of ways to see how he could eclipse the glorious light of Christ from its inception, they misquoted, Jesus, accuse him for Blasphemy, set up false witness against him and killed him, they did same to the Apostles and even the prophets before Jesus time.

So the gospel has always being under attack because the gospel exposes the darkness in man, it humiliates the pride of man, takes the power of salvation away from man's hand and place it on Jesus, not even a fragment is given to man, the cross alone stands and is exalted.



What believers must do in order not to fall from their stedfastness.

Is to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3:17-18 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

And also

The helmet of salvation is part of the complete armour of God a believer should put on in other to stand.

Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

1 Thessalonians 5:8
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

The believer must hold tenaciously to his hope of salvation.
