THIS IS SAD. At a time where our democracy like most civilized ones should be hearing towards decentralization of power and promotion of checks and balances, our legislators for selfish and stupid reasons are making laws to promote centralization of powers and elimination of checks.

A simple analysis will show that the IG by this new law is made too powerful. He recruits, fires, gives orders and controls the entire powers of the Nigeria police.

Why on Earth didn't they give recruitment powers to Police service commission, powers of suspension to IG and dismissal to PSC. That will check the powers of the IG and the overzealousness of police officers.

Good one
PSC have been oppressing police as if they are the ones paying police salary
They are supposed to decide policies and agree on administration with/for the police, simple.

The idea of removing accountability from the police is a sinister one. Checks and balances exist for a reason. We have become a police state. Buhari wants to dismantle democracy finally. Already, the police and military are laws unto themselves, in this regime terrorists became invisible. They kill, rape, invade farmlands and communities unspotted and vanish like the wind. Now they are not accountable to anyone.

This is bad news actually. So the Commissioner of police will stop taking orders from the governor of the state. Let me put it like this... So Abuja will appoint an Ahmed as Commissioner and send him to Enugu, and he won't take orders from the governor on matters of security but from Abuja.

Secondly a Governors in OYO will not have a say in recruitment of security personnel of his state, so lots of non indegines from the North can be sent to his state as security personnel instead of prioritizing those that reside in oyo or are indigenes of oyo state.

The reps from the southern part of the country are big idiots. We understand that they are afraid of giving Governors so much power but this is the time to make decisions that will trigger restructuring.

Governors should stop funding police in their state since the Police won't take orders from them. They should instead equip local vigilante with that resources. Let FG take the responsibility fully.

Stop writing nonsense. The President and the IG will not always be northerners. Power rotates. It comes from God alone.

Brother easy now.... is this not part of reform.... nawah oooo... nobody likes Police even in America that you may refer to as the best... They are still hated... we need to be positive on what we have and reform it not this kind of your criticism
jayworld15:
Useless police force. The worst in the whole world in killing, extorting and brutalizing its citizens day and night. In fact, they should just scrap it and start the recruitment all over again, first with intelligent graduates, then psychologically stress-free individuals. They also need to carry out a real mental examination on all of them. Bleep! Imagine invaders robbing you for hours without police in sight. And once the invaders are gone, they arrive, asking stupid questions and carrying out unnecessary investigations. Bleep!

There was never a time the police commissioners ever took orders from the state Governors. The truth is that most of them always run to the state Governors to partake in the sharing of the security vote allocation and with that, they are bound to do the bidding of the Governors.

Yes it's very good. Especially what we seeing Rivers State

What did we see in Rivers State
Were CPs ever under threat by the Governors
If u dnt know what's really happening, it's advisable u dnt misquote issues.

Coz as much as I know, CPs only take orders from Abuja, which has been raising dusts in the various states they are deployed, coz some times they sabotage the effort of the state based of tribalism, ethnicity and negative federal order.

So the Governors have been looking for a way to have them under state direction, which is wat the committee kicked out.

Yes they were. Especially during the time of Gov Amaechi and Mbu then. It's still on with wike. This is a very good development

Those were isolated cases. You don't throw the baby with the bath water

This is a wrong move. The governor is supposed to be the chief security officer for the state. If he can't control the police, then I wonder what the title is for.

The Federal government will handle the checking of the IG.

Nigeria is not a balanced federation. Until the internal crisis in the South West is resolved, the South can never practice true federalism as handed over to Nigeria by the Colonial masters. The Senate President and the Speaker are America citizens. They understand Federalism.

The governors remains the Chief Security Officer of a state, but state police commissioner can not take directive from governor except from Abuja. Is that Federalism?

Nigerian politician/governor doesn't deserve state police, the governors are mostly bloody power drunk dictator

If governor want state police they should begin by allowing local government full autonomy, no interference in state assembly etc

But no, dictators only want more power they are never ready to relinquish any of their own power
I support full autonomy to all spheres of government so that we can hold our locals responsible for any misgovernance

Which nonsense did he write? Nigeria is not a balanced federation. The Colonial masters understand the terrain and the future before they handed over Federalism to us. This Unitary system is aided by crisis in the South West and lack of unity and cohesion in the South. One day the South will come together.

Power comes from God ,in Nigeria, foolish majority determines who rules. We shall see how things play themselves out.

The Police Act was amended also in 2004 and also before then. So it is not colonial.
Stripping the Police Service Commission (PSC) of some of its powers and adding them to those of the IGP will not help the Police and the country as whole.

Furthermore saying the Governor as the Chief Security Officer of a State cannot talk to the Police Commissioner is not going to help the security of the State.
the amended act of 2004, is a bandage cover, which still have colonial mentalism

Time for every state to float a security outfits, they spent a hell of money to found the police even when they don't have control over CP of what use is the amendment? Governors localize your security now after all you the chief security officer of your state!

U are very funny bro, ur suggestions is unattainable in Nigeria. Which graduate & intelligent people are talking about which the police doesn't have. The problem is the system. Go & read the police act & U will see that what these Reps have done is just copy and paste with little change. What's needed here is complete change from colonial law that is in place now. Thanks
