LAWMA Clamps Down on Cart Pushers in Somolu, Bariga

Concerned by the growing trend of environmental degradation occasioned by the activities of cart pushers, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has embarked on a clampdown on all forms of cart pushing in Somolu and Bariga area of the Strate.

A release issued by the Acting Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, on Saturday, stated that the Agency has stepped up efforts to make Lagos cleaner and livable for all through the introduction of novel waste management programmes in the State, as well as supporting PSP operators to discharge their primary duties effectively.

Odumboni, however, pointed out that efforts to protect the environment were being hampered by the activities of cart pushers who engaged in flagrant acts of indiscriminate waste disposal in such places as canals, road medians and undeveloped property, among others.

According to him, “The menace of cart pushing in some parts of the State has led to the rise of indiscriminate waste disposal and exposure of residents to myriads of health hazards, especially during this period that the Lagos State Government is tackling the COVID-19 pandemic”.

“We cannot fold our hands and watch few unscrupulous elements jeopardise efforts of the State Government to make the Lagos metropolis cleaner, healthier and livable for all. To this effect, all forms of cart pushing remains banned and anyone caught contravening the Environmental Laws of the State will face the full wrath of the law”, he added.

The Acting Managing Director, therefore, appealed to residents to imbibe the culture of bagging waste and handing it to the assigned PSP operators instead of patronising cart-pushers or dumping refuse on the roads and other unauthorised locations, urging residents to call LAWMA toll-free lines 07080601020 and 617 for all complaints and inquiries.

How do the cart pushers add to environmental degradation in Lagos State? The dudes are not market square and do not generate any form of waste from pushing the carts. Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni is compound dunce. I hope Ibrahim Odumboni becomes the first victim when some of these kids who perform this lowest and most tedious job in society turn to armed robbery.

Don't misunderstand me,I'm not in support of environmental degradation but the way the government clamp down on the poor is so fast. The laws are made in Nigeria for the poor masses to obey. While the rich are most likely above the law.

No wonder people who steal noodles are killed, but the rich men who stole billions are been celebrated by the same people who burnt the guy that stole noodles. They know the government is solidly behind the looters so they rather praise them to see if something will come out from the stolen billions.

So easy to get the poor

Wrong , they do generate waste these people go to dump the refuse in different locations some on the road, the road median some in swamps, in bushes in canals etccreating black spots up and down and the same LAWMA will be called to clean up.

Okay let me ask you, where do the cart pushers dump their waste? You see that is the problem they dump the waste in illegal places.

I know for sure its not ojota or igando dump site these people dump the waste.

Lagos state knows what it's doing.
It's not about the cart pushers at all.

Firstly, ask yourselves who are the people mostly in this cart pushing business?

I guess LASG might have sensed that these people are becoming too much. Remember, when they banned okada. It was to curb the influx of certain people into the state; not necessarily for the reasons LASG stated on paper.

The cart pushers may be growing in numbers, and they know every crannies. This could be a security concern for LASG. The guys that were stopped from doing Okada might have moved to cart pushing.

The thing is, LAWMA should double up to serve and pick up refuse from those areas where the cart pushers were serving.

This is the way I see it...

How about they fix the smelly open gutters in Lagos first before banning cart pushers. Then maybe we'll take them seriously.

Cart pushing is beneficial to the society.

Here are some ways they benefit us:
1. The boys can access stress that the trucks of LAWMA cannot access
2. This is a form of hustling that can prevent boys from becoming thieves or kidnappers
3. Removal of waste is everyone's business. We should not discourage others.

Instead of arresting the boys,
1. They should be registered into a union
2. We should educate them to know how to make their jobs more sustainable
3. A place where lost (but valuable) items can be kept should be provided so that the boys can earn rewards when they return such items.

They have the passion, skill, and competence to remove trash from our society. Employ them, do not arrest them

Please we have to look into this.

LMAO, even if they read it one million times, they won't do anything about it, in short dem fit block d guy comment on their page for it. They don't like this kind of intelligence. Those aboki carts pushers have incredible passion and are extremely passionate about collecting refuse. They are super efficient at their work. And they know if they allow them to continue, dey will send Lawma business back to village, like Lawma send Cleaner Nigeria back to village grin Those guys are prompt. U can bet on it that between so so time, they will show, so u can plan and arrange ur thrash on ground for dem to pick up. U can even make a permanent arrangement and tell him to come at pick ur dirt and pay, u can negotiate their fees based on d amount of thrash ur disposing. Unlike govt Lawma dat is fixed and non negotiable. At d end of d day, dos guys are cheaper and even if higher, d diff is not much, but dey are super effective, always available. And they help out sometimes, deh will pack d thrash by demselves, just show dem d thrash, dey will go there an pack it themselves and u pay. But dos useless Lawma trucks will be doing drive by on d street as if they are doin drive by political rally. Na pipu go dey chase dem to throw garbage inside, in d process, s9me garbage will pour on d road and litter d street. Dirty will scatter everywhere. Cuz d trucks are big and dey don't always c parking space to park wen dey come around, and dey can't always park in d middle of d road cuz dey block traffic and pipu driving cars wee para for dem for blocking d flow of traffic. So many times, na drive by pick up dem dey do. So their system is fundamentally flawed. But Aboki pipu are 1000 times more efficient to pack out the thrash. so most pipu prefer dat. Lawma dey vex cum dey use govt power arrest aboki cuz aboki dry chop d moni dey wan chop. Dem no wan go village grin

Yes, very correct, but we still have to keep on directing this messages for there attention...

One day, I believe things will change for good.

When you're too stupid and there's no one to tell you. Who advisesthese people?
You are not providing the service but you're "clamping down" on people trying to do it.
These people are providing a service, even though it's informal. They are helping communities dispose of their waste. They need to be registered and regulated with clearly designated disposal sites.
Watch the streets filled with refuse people the people in government are too stupid to think. How long will Nigerians have to put with these idiots??

You must agree to the fact that the due diligent response of LAWMA in removal of trash from the communities will have no room for cart pushers. The remedy to the menace, if any, instigated by cart pushers does not lie in parading them as criminals. In fact, a well coordinated effort would have led to easy removal of trash in Lagos State. The main aim of the so-called managing director of LAWMA would have been a way to incorporate the cart pushers into the link of smooth and correct method to dispose trash in Lagos State. Africans do not seemed to think constructively. You should equally agree that the cart or truck pushers main job is not removal of trash. If the LAWMA, like any goofy Nigerian outfit, slacks on its job, the road is open to cart pushers to make extra Naira.

Bro you are flogging a dead horse. If not for the bribery money it generates, LAWMA should be abolished because it is not equal to the task. I can bet my last cent that at the time when this idiotic LAWMA roundedup cart pushers, there were trashes begging to be removed in Lagos State.

Hmmm..... the problem is not cart pushing... nor collecting waste... the problem is where they dump the waste. So we should allow them to choke the canals and dump garbage anywhere because they are "hustling"? When it rains... there is flood... garbage floating around because of the choked drainage systems.... who do we then blame? To too many of us... they have two choices in life.... cart pusher or criminal. Something is wrong with too many of us.... mentally.

For the past 5 years, I haven’t seen LAWMA trucks coming to my area to evacuate waste. Cart pushers are there to solve the problem. Lagos will become dirtier if cart pushers are banned.

I thought I was alone. There's an LCDA just on my street, yet the Agency never comes. Why would I typically patronise the far more expensive cart pushers if LAWMA was available? Honestly if not for those boys, a lot of places in Lagos will be eyesore.

Besides when has LAWMA become a law enforcement agency to arrest people trying to make livelihood?!

Most Nigerians have funny stream of thought. If there is no problem in waste collection, there should be equally no problem where trash is dumped.
