It's Sunday today, would like to be in the church. So I picked the Sunday school book and saw the topic for the day, The Unity at Babel. The teaching was set around the account in Genesis 11 which tells about the origin of human language, astronomy, and architect. According to the Genesis 11, there were some human populace, who spoke one language, came to agreement within themselves and agreed to build a city with a tower that it top is in heaven. The project commenced immediately and progressively. However, this progress caught the attention of God. He quickly summoned his councils in heaven to a meeting and decreed that the project must be stopped by confounding human's language. In the account, one could find that the purpose of the project is exhibition of architecture designs, understanding and dominating sky, and showcasing that things are achievable through unity. However, God was furious that man wae uniting and reaching for the sky.

Legend has it that If there was a tower of Babel, it was Etemenanki: a massive, stone ziggurat at the center of Babylon, presently at the southern Baghdad, Iraq. Record has it that ziggurat is 91m high. This goes to show that God became angry because Human built a structure recording 91m im height. Today, the tallest building is Al Burj Khalifa in UAE, measuring 830m in height. This mean human have successfully built a structure that is higher than what angered God back then. This they did with unity of different engineers, labor, and finances from all across the world, cutting barriers of languages, and exhibiting brilliance and might of humankind.

Beyond the tip of Burj Khalifa, Man have dominated the sky by building Aeroplanes and jets which can fly way above 20,000m. The highest commercial airliner altitude was 18288m by Concorde. The highest military air-breathing engine airplane was the SR-71 — about 27432m. Humans have built International Space Station, a kind of home or lab in the low earth orbit. The ISS was successfully built by collaboration of multiple nations. Man has also travelled and walked in space, set boot and projecting to build base on the moon, and are annexing all resources to set boot on Mars before 2035. The farthest human material in space is the Voyager1 which has almost gone past our solar system. It has reached interstellar space and currently 11.7 billion miles away from earth. Humans have robotic probes, satellites, telescopes in our solar system, and beam lights into deepest parts of the universe. Soonest, human will build a colony on other planets, planetary bodies, and even mine asteroids. Imagine having sex on the moon? This is total dominance and colonisation of the sky and space. Not forgetting, this height was made successful by the collective efforts of man from different tongue, color, belief system and backgrounds.

Space exploration goes beyond understanding nature of the universe. It has provided us deep understanding of origin of universe, planets and the solar system. It has revealed human are stardust. It has helped us relate with the outside world and ourselves. Before now, we had preachers and Evangelists. Today, we have Televangelists who have adopted the technology of satellite communication and television. Evangelism has gone from door to door to worldwide reaches through satellite communications with radio, television, internet and telephone services. Omniscient God couldn't foresight the benefit of space exploration of Babel tower, he disrupted the project which later helped his ministry.

Advancement and unity in tech development have broken the barriers of tongue. Bible is now printed in more than 2500 languages. A simple lingua apps can break the barrier God created and expand on evangelism.

God was angry with human because they built a structure which reached the height of 91m. What would he supposedly do now that we have human built machine that is 11.7 billion miles deep into space?

God was angry human united to build the tower of Babel. Five nations came together to build and launch ISS into Earth low orbit, is God really against human unity and togetherness?

He confounded human language but man is breaking that barrier today with multi-lingua systems, helping expansion of evangelism. Does God not have foresight before creating this problem in the first place?

The strange thing is that this is supposed to be a good thing. Humans coming together to achieve great things but religion have a way of turning every good thing on its head. look at the way christians are attacking vaccines. In the early 2000 in the area where i lived there were excitements about HIV. people were excited that white people used to claim that they know everything but God has now humbled them by creating a diseases that has no cure. God 1 - 1000 science. Sometimes I see religion as something harmless that people use to give their lives a meaning but when I think about things like these, I realise that religion is a diseases that needs to be cured ASAP. What else can make something good look bad like religion does?

GOD became upset because of the following reasons:

Eastward

The Book of Genesis emphasizes that as man moves eastward he moves away from God. We see this in the Garden of Eden, the Flood of Noah, and now in the Tower of Babel. It will also be seen later in Genesis when Lot separated from Abraham and went to Sodom. When humankind leaves the area of God's blessing, he goes to places that cause him problems.

Not Obeyed Command

The descendants of Noah had not obeyed the commandment of God to fill the earth. Rather than spreading out as God had ordered, they settled in the land of Shinar-a fertile land watered by the Tigris and Euphrates river. Once the people reached this plain in Babylon, they started a massive building project. The city was built in defiance of God's commandment. The building of a city would establish a unified front against God by preventing a scattering. These descendants of Noah had been disobedient to the call of God.

Make A Name

These particular descendants of Shem wanted to make a name for themselves instead of glorifying God. There is a play on words in the Hebrew with respect to the word name in this section of Scripture. The builders, the descendants of Shem, (Hebrew sham) wanted to make a name (Hebrew sham) for themselves. Instead of making a name, they will end up scattered and the name of their city (verse 9) will be Babel (confusion). The fact that they wanted to make a name for themselves will be contrasted to the account of Abraham in the next chapter-where God Himself makes a name for Abraham.

Why Build A Tower?

Once settled, they built the Tower of Babel as a monument to their own greatness-to make a name for themselves. Though Scripture does not give us the exact reason as to why they built this tower, there are several possible reasons.

1.Protection From Another Flood

A traditional view states that the tower was built by the people to protect themselves from another Flood. The phrase whose top may reach unto heaven is a figurative expression of great height. The tower was built high enough for the people to gain revenge against God-should He attempt to drown the inhabitants of earth again. The problem with this view is that God clearly promised not to send another Flood (Genesis 8:21-22; 9:11). Furthermore, why build a tower on a plain if the purpose was to be too high for floodwaters?

2.Tower To Reach God

Some critics of this account believe that the people were building a tower in an attempt to reach God. This is because the ancients had a belief that heaven was directly above the earth, and if they built a tower high enough, they could reach the presence of God. If they constructed this gigantic tower they could have thought that its tops would have pierced the vault above them. From this vantage point they could establish their own importance in the sight of humankind and God. There is nothing in the text to support the view that the people thought they could reach God's presence by building a tower.

3.Ziggurat

A popular view is that the people were building a Ziggurat- a tower built for the purpose of worship of the heavens. This meant the people were practicing the art of astrology rather than worshipping God. Yet the Hebrew word translated tower is migdol which simply means tower. In addition, the passage does not teach that the tower was for the purpose of worship.

4.Prevent A Scattering

We know the builders wanted to make a name for themselves rather than obeying God's commandment to be fruitful and multiply. Hence, they attempted to build a monument to their greatness. The monument was to set themselves up as a power-center to their own fame, glory and ambition. They wanted one united government that would rule over all, in defiance to the commandment of God.

The Scripture itself tends to support this as the proper way of understanding why they built the tower. It was that the people wanted to make a name for themselves rather than glorifying God.

And they said, Come, let us build a city, and tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth (Genesis 11:4).

Summary

The Tower of Babel was built by the descendants of Noah to prevent the people from scattering. This was done in defiance of God's commandment. The Tower symbolized their own efforts to settle a land rather than to fill the earth as was God's command.

You need to understand, before twisting out the account, that the project intended by these people is to build a city and Tower. The city has already been built or under construction which does not provoke God anger. City would prevent them from scattering, not tower as they won't dwell in the tower. The towel was just a brilliant architect, subjected to touch the heaven, also known as the sky. Thr key purpose of the tower is reaching the sky, not camping together as you posited.

Beyond the past, Man have built several Skyscrapers, they have structures that touches heaven. Remember those skyscrapers doesn't prevent people from scattering. The purpose of skyscrapers is showcasing brilliant architecture designs and revolutions.

This immense effort of man has gone beyond skyscrapers, we now have satellite and stations far beyond Earth.

The problem here is that man could achieve all these all by himself and drive the benefits into evangelism.

Has space station and satellites stopped human from scattering? Nope. Has space exploration helped expanded on ministration? Yes.

Now answer this, does this mean God has no vision?

Do you know that this scattering of people has caused major problems in the world. Do you know how many wars have been fought because people scattered and speak different tongues? from Edomites vs Canaans Vs Alamekites to Greece vs Romans to Celts vs Scots vs Irish to battle of kirina in ancient ghana to the two world wars and thousands of other wars. Why will an all powerful God feel threatened and scared that people are united?

It is strange that Bible painted unity among human as evil. It also depict architecture and space exploration as something really distasteful to God. However, the advancement of man which is presumed as bad is helping in expansion of God ministrations today. An omniscient God having no foresight.....

Your Pastor is on tv flashing baked hairs on the screen and speaking queen English. All thanks to space satellite communication. If you don't know, Nigeria has two sats in space.

Your dstv dish is oriented toward to space, creating a connection with space satellite. Wetin you call that? Pride!

You religious guys have poor thinking

Even when you enjoy service of satellite TV and internet communications on jw.org, yet Jehovah bloated over building structure that is 91m high. What angered Jehovah in the past is now today tool for evangelism. Prolly Jehovah lacks foresight... And man has grown in unity beyond what he can ever imagine.

I guess you missed out on their intention for building the tower stated from the Bible which you are using to launch an attack on God

his merciful sha I can't blame him when he allows Satan roast us as punishment

from your ignorant post am quoting

let's see now

there is an island in India which is inhabited by people who are cut off from civilization and just as outsiders are aware of them so to do they they know that people live beyond their place. so why haven't they over a thousands of years scatter or venture into new lands or even allow people come to their place ?

let me see how foolish you will twist this question and answer

so in your stupidity you aren't acknowledging the fact that anything is possible
that with what those people had agreed to do when building the tower that they won't stick to it for millions of years since you can acknowledge them keeping to building a tower

what about Sodom and Gomorrah that encircle.

do you think that if a community decides to cut itself off from others or not to spread to other lands that it isn't possible even when they are advancing in tech

Its because of that scattering that today man occupies a lot of places and God's word fulfilled.

what if they didn't scatter I guess you forgot sickness & diseases. or hail stones

what happened to Sodom & Gomorah or that Roman state destroyed by a volcano with no single survivor.

hmm pls read to understand not just the letters but context

What will happen to your Igbo ancestors that did not know or believe in Jesus before they died. Remember that Jesus said he is the only way to God so it means that all your ancestors will be roasted in hell for not believing something they did not hear while you their descendant will be bowing day and night singing praises to the wicked being that is roasting your ancestors unjustly. I pity for you.

but his plan is the priority so as that earth & mankind work for the better

Christ made it clear that his gospel wasn't of that of unity but divide

After the fall of man unity was impossible

and why ?

because you had the good & bad living together in this world

if unity exists who among both parties will compromise in accepting each others values

Christ statement told us clearly that unity of mankind is impossible except there is a divide.

Scattering has caused divides and troubles to mankind. It is because of scattering we have wars and disagreements. Millions of lives have lost to senseless war orchestrated by God's will of scattering.

If you don't know, the internet bring human together. This was made possible by satellite communication in space. Pastor Chris is able to preach to the Chinese, thanks to duolinguo app that handles translation seemlessly. The ISS was built by people who united across race, tongue and colors. Good things are achieved through unity, while disasters lumps from disunity.

Was it God plan that we should be disunited? Does God hate human unity?

That's why you should enter into the family of God to understand how judgement will be made on that day
your question is easy to answer but won't waste my time on people: a fallen race clouded by assumption and wickedness who have no moral standing to judge God

No twisting here bro, you just need to understand.
Man built that tower to make himself like a God. They had ulterior motives and were godless. They had forgotten who their first love should have been (God). God confounded Their language so that they could not finish that tower that supposedly was going to reach it to heaven. The people had nothing but power and wealth in their heads. As to Babylon, in the last days, Revelation in the Bible tells us it will be destroyed and that every rich man depending on the economy at that time will mourn.

In the last days (which we are now in), Revelation in the Bible tells us it will be destroyed and that every rich man depending on the economy at that time will be devastated financially.
We are definitely in the last years. Nearly all of the signs have been fulfilled. Watch for the Peace Treaty that will be executed between Israel and the Arab nations (which President Trump is putting together right now). Once that is signed and executed, we humans have few years left on the earth. Also, the Christians will recognize the Anti-Chrst at that time. God’s wrath will come down the in last years on unbelievers.
I know this may sound crazy, but remember that you were told this. (Christians will be martyred by the anti-Christ as told to us in Matthew 24 by the Son of God, Jesus).
All of this sounds like nonsense to non-Christians, but true Christians will know what I am talking about.

Don't say you weren't told.

Please are you saying we can discuss in PEACE without having to insult one another now?
Because i have a lot to share regarding the topic but i just don't want to get you upset or provoked as you often get irritated when a commentator isn't flowing with you.

I totally agree with you....there is a high possibility that jesus never existed and even if he did he probably wasn't as the Bible made him up to be, every free thinker out there should read dan brown's novel "The da Vinci code" , i'm not saying everything in the book is real , but the book will open your mind.

You are really deceiving yourself Mr.

God was against human unity and innovation. Read your Bible very well

Genesis 11:5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Verse 6 said if they continued in unity, speaking one language, nothing is impossible for them to achieve. He then in verse 7 confounded them, infesting disunity among them so that they abandon the project
