In 1903, Will West was in prison for some crime he had committed. He went through the normal process of anthropometric measurement which was called the Bertillon system. It was used as a means of identifying the prisoners.
Will West’s anthropometric measurements matched closely with another prisoner, William West, who was already in the prison for murder and was serving a life sentence. The two men were not related in any way.
Even though their physical appearance matched so closely; their fingerprints were completely different.
