These names were basically a product of slave mentality. Just as slaves love their oppressors like is the case with blacks, they never want to let go of their oppressors. This is why the streets of porthacourt renamed rumuokoro for instance by the whites cannot be renamed to what it actually is by the indigenous people because they are slaves and with slave mentality, they love their oppressors and can't let go of them. Those guys bearing names like Douglas for instance have root, they didn't fall from the sky. That root cannot be traced any longer. They have discarded their ancestral nomenclature, their root , and their identity to take up the semblances of their oppressors whom they love so much. The Chinese were colonised but I do not think theirs a Chinese with such surname because the surname is very special. It's a mentality something. I remember a Yoruba man in a book I read telling his son who wants to go abroad on a scholarship that he should remember he is an ajayi man (Ajayi is the surname) and like the ajayi moto, it's moderation to all things but study. What meaning would it make if he said remember you are a graham man? Who the fvck is graham?

How can they leave behind their first site of civilization to journey into an unknown place?

These are the oldest schools in Nigeria by the way..

(1) Baptist Academy, Lagos : 1855
(2) CMS Grammar School, Lagos: 1859
(3) Methodist Boys High School, Lagos : 1878
(4) Methodist Girls High School, Lagos : 1879
(5) Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar: 1895
(6) Saint Annes School, Ibadan : 1896

The ones in Onitsha were established in 1800s.

i have always thought it was the yorubas(the ones living in Lagos) that first came in contact with the Europeans.

And the Europeans also lived long in YorubaLand(Lagos) before permeating other regions.

They stayed long enough in Lagos to establish the first mission school(Badagry and CMS)...so why weren't their surnames influenced?
When Benin, some Niger Delta Coast were already trading with Europeans from 1470s and 1480s, Lagos was not even founded yet.

Benin soldiers founded a military camp they named 'Eko', in the 16th century and did not become that relevant till later. Especially slave trade from Badagry more in the late 17th to early 19th century.

With Ode Itsekhiri founded in 1480, Itsekhiri also gradually became major middlemen in business with Europeans.

Clearly Ijaw and other riverine people had more sustained contact and trade with Europeans.

OK.Why didn't this happen amongst other tribes too?Because i know the Europeans also had a hard time pronuncing their names

Ijaw names are 50 times harder to pronounce that yoruba or igbo names.

And ijaws made more contact with the whites than any other tribe in nigeria because virtually all ijaw communities are coastal communities

Nah the Europeans touched most Nigeria coastal States the same time.

Some Lagosians bears Taylor, Savage, Souza and more as surnames.

The Itsekiris too bears Donmigos as surnames.

Same as the Efik/Calabar/River axis.

Only the very proud ones didn't change or corrupt their surnames to sound European.

during the 1800s the british were fighting the yorubas, opobo in the SS, Binis, igbos e.t.c.. how do you expect the british to trade with people they were at war with

the "point of no return" places is just to validate the history of slavery which they wrote.

how can british parliament and british people whose descendants still maltreat, kill and kidnap black americans in the year 2020 claim to stop slave trading

just because they wrote in their history books does not make it true... Are you black people could not have gone across the ocean hundreds of years ago. even if black people don't go across the atlantic, every continent on earth is connected by land so they could have traveled to the american continent by land.
I don't have any idea on the nonsense you are talking about.

The European names common in Lagos are due to slave returnees especially from Brazil and others via Sierra Leone. Many returnees later totally gave up European slave names and not recognisable today.

[s]Europeans came to Onitsha and settled down long before going to Niger Delta. Europeans established so many premier colleges in Onitsha like DMGS, CKC, CRK, etc, before even looking to the direction of Rivers state, but it didn't make the Onitsha people that started having contacts with Europeans way back in 1500AD to threw away their origin.

Even the oldest missions in the old eastern region comprising of Rivers state were established by the British in Onitsha. It proves another point that they settled more in Onitsha than anywhere in the present day Niger delta, but still yet the people the British met in Onitsha never threw away their origin[/s].

Onitsha that's in the hinterland. Keep believing your lies.

These names are as a result of very extensive contact with European traders, from the 16th century on. The European traders had a hard time pronouncing the native names of their Ijaw and Efik trade partners. So they either Europreanised their native names or gave them pure European aliases which stuck. Yellowe for instance was Europeanised from Iyala; Horsfall from Osifolo. Henshaw, Ephraim, Duke, Hogan, Cobham, etc all have native Efik equivalents which I don't remember offhand.

What were Bini trading with Europeans in 1480?

The coastal Yorubas includes the Ilaje, Isekiris, Aworis and Ijebus.

All the way from Portnovo to Delta state.
