How We Went Off The Rail Trying To Raise Children To Be Religious. by blackjack21(m): 5:18am On Sep 12, 2020
Yesterday was friday and, as is usually a number thread from Islamic section made front page. One of those thread was trying to teach Muslim parents on how to guide and institute in their children the ritual of performing salat from their younger days.
https://www.nairaland.com/6111352/how-instill-spirit-performing-solah

It was a thread that brought down a shower of nostalgia on me, my mind went back and forth remembering all the extreme my parents went to put us in the way they believe is the right way.

Our days usually start at 4:40am when they would wake us from sleep to go to the mosque for morning prayer. It doesn't matter, in any extremity of weather; I was raised in the north. In the cold, well below 25°F we would still be on our way to the mosque, unless you're proven to be sick, come 4:40am, if you know what is good for you, you better be at the mosque. Or you would have to explain to a DORINA, whip that has been solemnly marinated in oil.

After praying, it is common sense for one to be heading straight home right? No!
There was this Na'ib (a position somewhat below the imam), whose is Mallam Idris, who would gather his kid around to teach them the Qur'an. My dad, the Führer, fancy that we must join his class. Which kept use engaged after prayer until sun-up.
Upon getting home after Mallam Idris class, no rest, we're on our little feets getting ready for breakfast and then it's school.
After school and all the totalitarian madness associated with it, which pretends to end by 2pm, we get to go home and make sure that we're ready within the next two hours for ISLAMIYYA.
If you forgot and went to play football, you get a to explain DORINA, both at home and in islamiyya the next day the register is called, except you're imaginative and can lie to save yourself. Still if you lie you're going to hell. It was like being between the horns of a great bull, either way you go you're gorge.

There is this teacher at the islamiyya who has intimate love for beating the hell out of his pupils with a motor belt. A kid would be coming home from islamiyya and all over his visible body is a discordant ridge tattooed all over his body. A artless illustration that he had been stubborn or didn't learn learn his Tauheed, or his attention was stolen by something outside of the classroom, or any other of the million infinite possibilities.

Oftentimes, a lot of kids rebelled, some in a very spectacular way, against such tyranny. Like Khalid, who managed to bloody his teacher's head with a well timed furious throw of a rock stone.
Others in a more subtle manner.
Some of use are closet atheist, like me. The triumph of reason, eh.
The son of Mallam Idris, who taught us Qur'an after morning prayer, is now a drug addict. Specialised in inhaling, injecting and ingestion of crazy substance into his body, and has grown to be a explosively violent person. Yet he still pray and definitely fancy himself a better human than anybody who doesn't.
Me; I always find myself awake 4:40am every single day. But, I have substituted my prayer routine with smoking of marijuana (just like I'm doing right now), reading and athleticism.

It's without doubts that our parents love us, even if basically as genetics would care about its print out, and hoped for the best for us. But realistically how many people are definitely sure of what is best, or for whom it's best for?
Children are subjected to fanatical upbringing in hope of raising men with astute personality devoted to pleasing God only to ended up marring their person and raising thoughtless monster.

I'm glad some of us grew beyond the question of who's God, and the quest to please him and not incur his wrath.
I hope that many more of us see reason and see religion for what it is, pitting people against each other.
Maybe it worked sometimes ago. But, it isn't working anymore. Why cling unto it.

I hope that we come together shed away our shackles and learn to be truly devine by helping one another.

Thank you for reading.

You do realize that you can make your children love God instead of bullying them into religion. You are just taking the easy way out. You know how many adults don't talk to their overtly strict parents

Its gladdening to see someone from your side reach this level of realisation, I'm sure you know by now though, that the other religion is no different. you see the owner of this very forum is himself e self profesed atheist. despite that his dad is a top member of one of the popular churches here in this country. and in realising his dream, he had to really fight till bis last breadth before his popsy eventually gave way.

but the best rebellion is not in becoming the very thing that the proponent of these religious practices swear by someone they have never met that their religion is capable of preventing. Rather, it is in growing up to be such a wonderful and progressive member of this society that your becoming it will astound whoever comes across you. Especially when they know you did it without adhering clutching to religion as a compass.

the truth is that morality is different from religion, and you dont need to be religious, in order to be moral. afteralll the millions being embezzled in this country right now is being stolen by people who are mallams, imams and pastors. People who hold who hold one top position or the other in a popular religion.

in short, you will have to grow out of a dependecy on drugs, weed or any external agents. Not that there's anything wrong in their use....especially when you do it for fun.... But that much as some folks cling to religion to guide them through life... you shouldn't replace religion with hard substances... it'll be akin to dumping one relgiion for another.... like PDP members cross to APC and vice versa... You will not be different from any of them...you will only be serving a different God from them.

And I will advice that when you have yur own children..... teach them personal discipline, responsibility and empathy.... do not now leave them to themselves...hoping that they will be able to make sense of the world by themselves.. it is still your responsibilty to give them scaffolds and constructs..only that you need make sure,....that the ones you provide them with is one which will not create monsters out of them like many religious people are now doing.

I am an academic myself....and I meet on many basis kids from such homes... it only takes a little while before they start rebelling..especially once they start earning a little something that frees them from financial dependence on their fanatic parents.

That's the story of 9 in 10 African children. I have seen a mother bully an autistic child and try to beat the "demons of autism spectrum" out of her body.

We have read in this forum how a pastor impregnated a young girl brought to him by her mother.

We have heard thousands of Christians support a religious leaders who issued a death threat and millions of Muslims calling for the execution of a poor singer with a different opinion.

They teach us "Islam is the fastest growing religion" but do not tell us how it spreads through force , terrorism and killings. They don't teach them that Usman Dan Fodio killed their great great grandparents to force the religion of peace on them.

In Muslim hostels, the pupils that are a bit different are possessed by Jinx while in Christian hostels , they are wizards.

Life is empty for the African child. No amusement parks for the African child, the ones coming may not have the privilege of seeing natural reserves or even owls and cats. Like someone rightly pointed out this morning, if you use Google Earth in the US or Uk in every nook and cranny of each enclave of those countries there is always an important company or recreational facility to direct a visitor. Apart from State capitals in Southern Nigeria, the only public storey buildings are those of Churches and those are clear if you use Google Earth .

I have accessed the state of the nation and I have come to a conclusion to alter my African genes, reproduce with a Caucasian woman and raise my lovely kids in a rational society.

I do not understand why people blame religion for their bad choices.
For every child that felt the need to rebel against their parents and their religion and blamed religion for their bad choices, there are 2 children who because of a good moral upbringing (which religion teaches) avoided bad decisions that should have ended in tears for them.

What do we blame for terrorism in the North East and middle East?

What do we blame for homeless babies tortured because they are "witches".

See the picture below, a church in Akwa-Ibom condemned that baby as a wizard, look at who saved his life.

The power of indoctrination should not be underestimated.

During my secondary school days, SOP (songs of praise) is compulsory for every student. As it's a routine to sing from the hymn book every morning. Amidst other religious activities usually observed on the assembly ground. Failure to have a copy attracts punishment. This and many others are what promote religion and its irrationality.

Let me not even talk about parental influence. undecided

See the bold in your post .

I know a son of a rich man from Ebonyi State who is handicapped by Poliomyelitis because in his father's Church they do not take "Western medicine". A free vial of vaccine could have saved his limbs without religion.

What about that child hit by a stray bullet who cannot choose to have a blood transfusion to save his life because his parents are members of Jehovah Witness. I hope he smiles while in pain.

I hope it is morally right and joyful for that pretty Jehovah Witness Lady whose parents would disown her and not attend her wedding because she wants to marry a rich oil worker she deeply loves who attends Redeemed Christian Church instead of a poor private school teacher and gambler who attends her parents' Jehovah Witness?

Always remember that religion does not teach morality but total submission to the religion. What is ordinarily wrong is right and moral if your religion says so.

Be truthful if you have never prayed or answered to a prayer in Church which suggests that God deals with your enemies like the Philistines.

You sing "Obedience is better than sacrifice" thereby approving the punishment of Saul for his sympathy on the Amalekites when an all loving God sent him and soldiers on a genocide mission to completely annihilate the people of Amalek.

How do you explain that even music and secular channels rated 18
censor the word "bastard" while a prominent pastor uses it on a pulpit before Children who are not yet teenagers? The congregation made up of thousands shout Amen to the word which is censored even by the NBC.

So much about morality.

There is this Yoruba quote that goes, ”Ohun taye baso e da, wa n fibu e bo dola“ and it sort of translates to, “The world makes you then blames you for how you turn out”.

Aristotle said, “Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.”

We are born blank slate, “tabula rasa” and the society makes us (John Locke). Now, it’s left for the individual to figure out things for himself/herself because the collective is more useful to the society than the individual, hence, the indifference towards the individual.

In the meantime though, humane religions should still hold their places in Nigeria. With the passivity of our mindset currently, just try to imagine Nigeria without religions.

truthfully, I often missed the comfort of religion. but, I'm consoled in that I'm not living in self deceit.

Christianity have passed a certain threshold in it shelf life. if you we're to throw your beliefs away; the worse anybody could do is excommunicate you. So people like Seun Osewa are a bit lucky. In Islam it's quite different, especially if you find yourself in a country overwhelmed by their population, coming out different would be tantamount to self injury. And, terribly not fond of martyrdom.

Worse is a people who are trying to raise a generation with morals that does not echo in themselves. that is a typical definition of most guardians.

the children indoctrination is one of the reasons why I constantly preach against religion here. I don't care what an adult use his life for. But forcing children to worship God is bad.

But when you tell Muslims, they will pretend and say nobody forced them. I had similar response from k4kenny yesterday

you are cruel. Why not teach them your religion and allow them to practice it or otherwise. Why forcing them? Forget about paradise and hell fire. God is not daft and he's not cruel. Leave the innocent children biko.

Teach them moral and teach them your religion. If your religion make sense to them, they will do it.

The subject of discourse, RELIGION has been given a lot of meanings and interpretations. It baffles me at times when a particular religion scholar preach a topic to be A, and another from same religion preaches same topic to be B, I begin to wonder who is passing the right and who is not, cos juxtaposing the right teaching most time do prove difficult. I had to narrow every teaching, religion or philosophical to what goes in line with my insight and sense of reasoning.

What we have in our present society are abuses of religion and hypocrisy.

Watched an Indian movie titled, 'P.K.', and I got to see RELIGION from another diverse angle. One might think d movie is just mere scripted, but if u are d type who could decipher and decode lessons some messages are trying to convey, u would agree with me that such movie is an interpretation of what we take religion to be or mean in this present society.

Religion is just like a teaching pass across to us through or from our parent which implies that, d religion u are likely to end up pitching ur tent with is determine by d people (parent) u came into this world through.

As one of d message from d movie have it, there is no particular mark to justify anyone to be a member of a religion by default.

Religion is been judge based on outward look or display, identity and not internal or from the mind. Reason people could switch religion with ease since there is no mark binding one 2 a particular religion.

We mostly chose religion we want to be associated with even thou behind closed door, most practice a different or dual religion. Or what would one say about a religion leader using diabolical power?

You are so blessed for thinking this way. People have to see the only God that we have is Freedom and Peace and Laughter. And we should all strive to bring that into all we touch.
