gregyboy:I have answered your dullard questions when I asked that you stop disgracing your family all over Nairaland after the terrible dragging I gave you. Again, your picture was once on Nairaland, and as such many people would have known both you and your family. So, stop hiding behind the supposed facelessness on Nairaland to keep disgracing yourself and your innocent family — it is not so faceless for you particularly. If Oba Ewuare II finally get your time to trace you concerning all your sacrilegious statements against him and his ancestors; it is then you would realize that those OPC he (Ewuare II) recently brought to Benin are not for jokes after all. 8 Likes |

A long “Y”-shaped stick awaits your neck to banish you and sweep away misfortune from the land. Shebi you won’t stop disgracing your poor innocent family. 7 Likes |

gregyboy:Well, every civilization has some myths. The very smart Egyptians, Greeks and Romans had theirs. Be it Horus, Amun, Hercules, Romulus or whatever. In Benin we also knew that kings have some myths that surround them. Just like the golden stool falling from heaven in Ashanti kingdom. Progenitor of Edo people was a man called Idu. That is the consensus. He was later deified as "Erimwindu". His shrine is in the Palace. One of our neighbours the Igbo still call Benin Ndi Idu. Children of Idu. Idu children become Igodo with many quarters. Various quarters had a senior man or Odionwere. So Odionwere of various quarters became the gerontocratic elders council. A leader of this council became the first Ogiso. So it was initially rotatory upon death of one Ogiso. Oliha, Edohen, Ero were elders by the time Ogiso changed to hereditary. Maybe Ezomo too. To get support for hereditary Ogisoship, I believe it was Ogiso Ere who offered those elders, his Co leaders hereditary eldership or Odionwere. Later to be called Uzama with others like Eholor Nire, Oloton and crown prince/Edaiken added. With an oath that Uzama must ensure hereditary obaship and Oba must ensure their children get their inheritance too. To fulfil that oath at Erimwindu, led by the Oliha, the Uzama must crown or at least be present when the Oba is crowned at night. They are among the very very few allowed to be present at coronation. 1 Like |

gregyboy:OK. Put your own version here. Because I grew up in a house with scholars in Edo history. I have mentioned this years ago here already. People who actually write the books. Debunk my version with a better version. I will also refer you to a young scholar tutored by the best Scholars of Benin history. Among Palace chiefs. In my case one now a Palace chief and an uzama chief descendant. I do not care about any other person when writing what I know to be the truth. This is separating facts from fiction. My version is far more real. Prove that you know it better. I don't mind flying into 9ja to prove it. |

Re: Did You Know Of Benin by AreaFada2: 10:14pm On Sep 14, 2020 |
gregyboy:Did you even read my post at all? Where did I say they came from the sky? How do elders from various quarters of Igodo, all descendants of Pa Idu, come from the sky? At least take your time to read before you comment. The English have the legend of king Arthur. But they also now know the likely origin of Britannic tribes from DNA. Not to mention English that came from Germany and Denmark to replace the Romance. But it has not diluted the popularity of Arthur legend even though nobody believes it's true. |
Re: Did You Know Of Benin by gregyboy(m): 10:29pm On Sep 14, 2020 |
AreaFada2: Then oduduwa history should be believable by you too because he indeed also came from sky If we africans can't still separate myth from truth then we will still be producing by government If the rulers were not referd to ogiso i would probably had believed that there was transition between those rulers to the oba dynasty but for that single reasons they named the rulers ogiso has already singled it out There is a benin myth we were thought in school On how the cloud use to be close the earth and was so close to the ground that ine could stretch his hands and touch the clouds snd the clouds grew yams and if you needed to anything just reachout and take the food from the cloud, but it was forbidden not to finish what you took, a woman took yam from the cloud and couldn't finshed it, and the cloud vexed and went up high this is one of the benin myth Even if you have benin scholars at your reach them telling stories doesn't equate to validity, No one was present the time d ogiso ruled so when cant validate for anyone as telling a correct history even if from the palace, we can only gather information and draw valid possibilities from history 2 Likes |

gregyboy: Is this story new to you? If so try to know than dismiss it. I made example that various civilizations introduced myths later along the line. The Asantehene King of Ashanti said himself that the golden stool didn't come from the sky. That some chiefs around Osei Tutu wanted to give him divine right to rule by introducing that myth. I keep citing civilisations because humans do not exist in a vacuum but have lots in common. I was querying stories by the age of 12, surrounded by manuscripts for publication. Ask yourself this: at what point were original rulers called "ogiso"? Couldn't it have been much later as rulers got more powerful and grew in mystic? We cannot say. But they all had personal names like Igodo, Ere, Obioye, Ediae, Iredia, Ogbomo, Ighido, Efeseke, Odia and so on in no particular other. Attempt to curry divine right, ridiculous to us today, but quite powerful to ancient superstitious people, is what has muddied the water today. I quoted the literate and quite smart Greco-Roman antiquity having such myths too. Whatever we think of ogiso today is irrelevant. Fact is the tactic allowed them to get a centralised government that gradually brought order, organisation and civilisation. |

AreaFada2: How did ogiso change to obaship then If indeed as you illustrated if indeed ogiso existed then they were humans claiming divine royalty but not to forget, The earliest document from the Europeans recorded on benin describing the ogiso rulers ruling in the time of no sun or moon The ekaladeran history i believe never had any connections with eweka But how did the ogiemen treaty come about if indeed ekaladeran story ended at ughoton as stated in 1903 |

A French prince used to be called Fils de France. Therefore a precious prince, the hope of ending an interregnum deserved many appellations. |

AreaFada2: please my brother let make some little correction there I.e the entire ogisos have their own name from one to 31 with the first name igodo that was were the name given the people came from "IGODO MI GODO" which literally means kings gives birth to king. so please they have their own name each high percent of the ogisos were crown has odionwere form of ogisos then it was almost in form of no primogeniture but the oldest and strongest for the ogiso Emosee is sometimes considerer to be a woman by some historian while some say it was his mother's name he used as his name when he was crowned. please ogiso is not a myth at all the only part which is really a meant is "Igodo falling from the sky" which then made the people tittle him as ogiso meaning king of the sky. |

Re: Did You Know Of Benin by Etrusen(m): 5:21am On Sep 15, 2020 |
gregyboy: Oga ogiso was just in form of Oba title given to any one who is crown but they have their own name added to the Oba e.g Oba Erediauwa and Oba Ewuare are they not two two people entirely ? but they have the "oba" added to their name to show who they are. that is how it was in ogiso dynasty we have 31 ogisos before oba dynasty among whom are Ogiso Igodo ogiso Ere ogiso Orire and so on. please I hope this is clear ? and for that of "erhinmwidu" you said it is the ancestral alter for the past kings till date handled by the isekhure of Benin. the erhinmwidu is always regarded as the number Oba of Benin deity because it's the mark of his fathers and father's fathers. just like the name stands erhinmwin_spirits idu_ Edo but because the Oba is Edo pillar all things revolve round him thats while have names like obaredo obarisiagbon obayangbon obaradesagbon. etc please I hope you understand? |
Re: Did You Know Of Benin by Etrusen(m): 5:48am On Sep 15, 2020 |
gregyboy: Oga I really admire your point that there always myth and there reality. the only myth in the ogiso history is that igodo came from sky but that doesnt mean the dynasty was not real if you want us to talk about igodos origin, that will totally be a topic big than what we are saying. please I hope you are cleared? And for your school myth u talked about and of oduduwa, they are mere myth but am not removing the fact that oduduwa could also be true but the yoruba historians have not really come to realize that basing oduduwa origin has falling from sky is something that's not possible and that makes it a total myth. if we should picture it from a biblical angle, the angels that came to fell in love with woman of mankind had winds but no account in oduduwa histry that says he had winds and also the angels and the women of mankind had children that was giants but no account of oduduwa says he was a giant. so my brother their are one can believe in even when he was not there when it happen but I bet you myths can be easily figured out without a second thought. one love bro |

Re: Did You Know Of Benin by AreaFada2: 11:28am On Sep 15, 2020 |
Etrusen:I am trying to understand what the argument is. We always had obagodo. But Idu was the progenitor of Edo race. So both Obagodo/Ogiso, omonoba n'Edo and shortened form Oba and aboriginal Benin origin people descend from Idu. So whatever name his descendants later became known by, he is their ancestor and rightly so that earliest Oba godo or Ogiso or Oba rightly had an ancestral shrine dedicated to him. Even families have own ancestral shrines with family ukhure unless those forming holier than the pope. Our history is not dictated by others and we are not here to impress outsiders but portray it as accurately as learned traditional and modern researchers can honestly decipher. |
