2008?

Graduate unemployment started rising steadily in Nigeria as far back as the 1980s. As a graduate, you should know that. Nothing to add here - get creative & despise not the days of small beginnings. Also, your integrity is your greatest asset - guard it closely. Opportunities will come, be adequately prepared!

Sad but what did you study in the University?

I think it has become necessary we have guidance and counseling departments in all our schools from nursery to university. Not every course you study in the university is meant to be your cash cow. Some are only a stepping stone to bigger things ...you only need to be patient.

Sorry about your situation. A lot of us Bankers, Doctors, Accountants, Lawyers etc also went to the university and have never been out of a job since we graduated years ago.
This is just my opinion though, but if a person who graduated over 5 - 10yrs ago hasn't been able to find a job, I cannot help but think that there's probably something wrong with the person himself or his quality of education.

Though this your opinion doesn't hold water, cause we know the Nigeria of today where merit is sacrificed on the alter of connection(who you know), have seen alot of bright student during our undergraduate days in Uniben who are either underemployed or unemployed, not because they're not properly educated. the fact you've not been out of job does not make you invisible, have seen bright minds loosing jobs especially in this covid 19 era. Op don't ever think your education is a waste of time. The race is not for the swift nor battle for the strong but is of the Lord that shows mercy.

As usual, FAILURES like you ALWAYS omit two things from your stupid story:

1) The Course you Studied went-in for (l am certain you did not study anything)
2) Your Grades, on graduating.

Even iff you studied Education, English, Religion or even P.E and you came out with a 1st Class or 2nd-Upper, worst case you will be teaching in a mushroom, Private Secondary School and earning good pay TODAY.

Not to mention if you studied any of the STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or Professional COurses like Law, Accountancy, Architecture, Surveying, B.Mgt., Mass-Comm.

Certificates are just Testimonials to show that you started and finished from a school, it does not confirm that you did not waste your time in all those years, LEARNING NOTHING.
The truth that you fools wont say is that you just went through the Univeristy, but the University never went through you!

You learned NOTHING throughout the years you wasted inthe University and came out with a Pass and even worse, with NOTHING IN YOUR HEAD.
All those years of flexing babes in the School and joining Cults, have finally caught up with you.
No wonder your own NYSC took Two years (2008 -2010)
tongue tongue

Show me ONE PERSON who applied tehmselves properly in School, who are regretting it?
Even if you came out with a poor acedemic grade (ordinary Pass), what you learned will set you apart in any vocational work (even Barbing!) that you chose to do, if you dont want to be am employee.

Keep consolling yourself and blaming the University for your mental and moral failure, your mates are Managers in Banks, Oil Firms, School H.O.Ds, Builders and seasoned Architects, practising Lawyers and Business CEO's, etc.
If your wife has sense pass you because l know not a few graduates who are big time Fashion designers today and when you ask them what was the most influential thing in their business, they would tell you that it is the EDUCATION they had, as it opened the EYES OF THEIR MIND to a lot of things, and the apply such things to their "tailoring business".
I know people who read Computer Science and today are gurus in the Building sector, l know Lawyers who are, Bankers, Accountants who are Teachers...... it is not about what you studied, it is about how well you applied yourself to knowledge in the University.

Just dey watch, your wife will learn tailoring finish and dump your lazy, useless arse for a more focused and ambtious man, siddon dea dey lament abotu the Paper wey you keep for house. grin

The Quote you forgot to add is: "Heaven helps ONLY THOSE who Help themselves".

Like my own father use to tell us: "SUCCESS' is where OPPORTUNITY meets PREPARATION".

As a Boys Scout, l remember they always tell us: BE PREPARED.

If someone graduated for like Ten years and in all those years they cant figure out what they can can do with their HANDS and BRAIN (while lamenting about those who have their Palm Kernel Cracked for them), then they need to give their palm kernel to those who know what to do with it. undecided grin grin

Nothing more to say.

He wont take it, he is a lazy, bum! grin grin

I have seen Graduates go to Work Sites to do Labourer work, on more than one occassion, only for the Overall Site Engineer and CEO to notice that 'there is something" about this "labourer" that sets him apart from others, the way he contributes knowledge to things that are far and above that of an illiterate Labourer! That is the Education/Certificate at Play!
From there, discussion started and he was eventually elevated to an Engineer position, when he presented his Certificates as an Engineer who had to just do a Labourer job, to make ends meet.

I know a Senior Manager at BAGCO Super Sacks who started as a Floor Sweeper in th Plant, even as a graduate of Unilag, becaus ehe could not get a job.
He eventually got "promoted" to be a Machine Operator grin but when an opening for Graduate Trainees opened up, he told his Supervisor and that one was against it because he could not imagine one of his Lebourers becoming his Manager!
he then went to meet another Manager who has always complimented his work and that one encouraged him to apply for the Post.
He was shortlisted and eventaully employed, today, he is a Senior Manager!

If the Op goes to the above Company TODAY, he would still see advert for Labourers, just as it was since 1995! grin
The labour turnover is rapid, as the job is not an easy one.

Thing is, when you are Lazy and unintelligent, there is always an EXCUSE to JUSTIFY your FAILURE, if yo udont blame the Govt, you can blame your tribe or blame your Certificates or even blame your enemies among your family members.

Tear them or.
You are a product of a terrible teacher
Go to any school and ask the students to identify the subject they dislike most. Many of them will chorus “mathematics”. What makes student harbour a passionate hatred for this subject still remains a mystery for most educationist  .

. Many reasons have been proposed . One which seems to be overlooked is the fact that students do not feel connected to the subject in anyway  . Imagine spending hours finding ” x” when “x” is neither your brother or your sister only to search for “x the following day. It is not only routinal but boring. The student begins to wonder whether to use the same formula to find his biro.  This is because the teacher failed to explain to him the application of these formulas in real life situation.

Many mathematics teachers were top in their classes when they were students. When they are not learning in class, they are studying in the library. They spend little time socialising  and having fun     . They grow up to become an expert in mathematics but deficient in relating same to the student . They begin a topic by introducing an abstract theory and leave the student wondering how this theory concerns his life.

They do not deserve to be blamed. They only repeated what was handed over to them by their teacher  . Garbage in garbage out. They can choose to create a new tomorrow.

We can have outstanding mathematician but terrible teachers of mathematics. Great mathematics Teachers begin by stimulating the interest of the student. Students who are less than fourteen years of age are emotionally focused. They tend to feel more and rationalise less .

Simultaneous Equation. : Divide the children into groups of 4 .Ask tleaxh group to go to four different shops . Give each group #200 to buy pencil and biro  .total amount of both items  should be six. Compare each group answer. . Solve on the board. Which group got it right?

Speed : Take student outside  Measure any point A about 100m apart. Get each student to walk fast or run from point A to B and get another student to record time against the student. After each student must have done dat, take them back to the class and calculate the speed of three students. The remaining students should calculate their own  walking speed.

Volume of cylinder : Tell student to bring any empty milk ,or tomatoes container to class. Using ruler, they watch you measure the height and Diameter and repeat the same for their container. After that, you calculate the volume or area using formula method and watch them do the same  .

Average : each student is given a company name and asked to go to the library and get the prices of shares for nine consecutive days. They are to find the moving average of five

Area  The student measure the length and breadth of one class room tile  . Student count the number of tile in the class and find the product.

One way we make mathematics boring is that we do not involve the student in getting the data. We spoon feed them the data . In real life, they have to know how to get the data themselves.  Getting them to measure it themselves makes them engaged. One parent told me his child measures everything he can lay his hands on at home . After measurement, he would begin to calculate  . Things got out of hand when the television fell off. These method make class lovely, children interesting and active participant in the learning process, .Soon children will begin to love the subject

RESPECTS, to a Good Teacher!

I think teaching is 'An Art', its like Drawing, you are either gifted in it or you are not!
But like Art too, you can LEARN it with continous training and training but some are just NATURAL Artists!

I taught Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics for some years and the Head of the School once told me that he has never seen where Students of other Classes (A Boys Only College, with an average Class size of 65 Boys!) beg the Teacher to allow them join the Mathematics Class or run out of another Subject, into a Mathematics Class, in all his years as Head of a School!

He was passing along the Blocks and was annoyed at seeing a crowd of students, some hanging along the windows and corridor, just straining to hear and see what was going on inside the Class. For a First Class College, that is not a good site to behold.

He told me his mind, I smiled and asked him if he thinks l should drive them away? He said "Nooo" but he was just wondering and will like to sit in the class and observe what was going on and my Teaching.
I thought about it and decided thestudents would be too uncomfortable and wont act naturally, if he was within the class (every one fears this our Boss!). So, l hatched a Plan, l will record two, double-period Classes and he can watch it in his office.

I did that, without letting the Students know WHY..... and he was shocked! HE took greater interest in me since that day and was dismayed the day l said l was retiring from teaching because l got a job in an Oil Company. Economics Boss, this young man has dreams.
I was Sad too, but l have to move-on with life cry

What you described in your post above, that is, relating a Subject to Reality, introducing the Subject-Topic to the students in a manner that they can relate with, in a manner that shows that it is real-life, in a manner that blends the subject topic naturally with nature, is what it takes to develop the interest of students in an otherwise difficult subject and it makes a whole world of difference if the teacher is sound and knows his onions, has a good grasp of the language and command of his subject(s).

Unfortunately, most Teachers of today are not properly grounded (academically), have no interest in the job (are only doing it as a last resort) and this reflects in their subject delivery.

I come from a family of long standing Teachers and teaching comes to me naturally.
Mathematics is the simplest subject (and Sciences in general) because the answer to the same problem, is always the same and the problems can always be reduced to the same thing, all it takes is a sound Teacher who knows how to deliver the subject.

Thanks for sharing your post, l am thrilled that we still have people like you.

PS: Kindly correct some typo-errors on your Blog (like you mispelled 'Blogging' as 'Bligging'. undecided
