Feminism Should Not Exist In Nigeria. by ePoster: 10:16pm On Sep 29, 2020
Honestly, I think it's absurd!
In a country such as Nigeria, it's bizarre that anyone should identify as a 'feminist'.
Feminism isn't a movement or organization. It's a way of life. A belief in something that should be considered normal.
Regarding child marriages, Nigeria has the third highest number of child brides. Of all the countries in the world, it has the 11th highest rate of child marriages. 44% of females in Nigeria are married before the age of 18, while 18% are married before the age of 15.
In terms of education, age 15 and above, the rate of female literacy is 59.4% compared to that of males, 74.4%.
By the year 2012, 25% of females, age 15-49, had undergone female Instruments mutilation.
1 in 4 girls compared to 1 in 10 boys would experience sexual violence before the age of 18.
So I see no reason why anyone needs a fancy title or group to fight for a sane society where every individual is treated fairly regardless of gender! There should be a pressing need in everyone to advocate equality.

this topic/issue is centered on helping those who are victims of sexual abuse, have been denied the Right to education because of their gender and sold off, as kids to men they barely know!
I think a child's physical and psychological wellbeing is more important than some of the problems you highlighted.

I see no reason why it should even be a thing! Every normal human being should be concerned with advocating gender equality, given the chance.
It shouldn't be a group or movement. If a man believes that every child ought to be in school and that the sexual molestation of girls and mutilation of their private parts (to prevent them from embracing their sexuality) is abnormal, then he's a feminist! And if everyone thinks like that, why should feminism even exist? It's doctrines should be practiced by all.

Watch how people would jump to comment on seeing the topic without reading the content.

I couldn't agree more with you, op.But concerning the issue of child marriage, barring those forced into it,children(16+) of nowadays are so exposed.80% of what they think about is sex, how to hook a well to do guy or in extreme cases a gboy who hits it big, how to successfully scam people and pepper their mates with Balenciaga/Benz as the case may be and iPhone. There has been a steady decline in morals so while advocating for eradication of child marriages which is more common up north.Down south here, we need to teach our kids that there is dignity in labour and the rich boy marries poor girl scenario only happens in nollywood.

I agree. Marrying children out is a tradition in the Northern region that needs to be eradicated. Period!
Down south here, we need to teach our kids that there is dignity in labour and the rich boy marries poor girl scenario only happens in nollywood.
Exactly, it's our responsibility to instil values and morals in children. Especially now, in a time when sex is idolized.

I knew the title would be a problem for some.
This thread wasn't created with the intention of dissing feminist, but to point out to everyone that it's doctrines aren't special but simple logic that those in a sane society would accept and abide by.
Advocating gender equality shouldn't be a movement or group but a way of life. Everyone should fight together to put an end to the numerous injustice perpetrated against the girl child and females in general.

You are busy talking about liberalism when people here are unemployed.

Will liberalism help in providing job? NO

Liberalism is Anarchy on it own, an ideology from socialism which eventually leads to communism.

Really?.... not sure what feminism means anymore. The word has been misused and abused. No doubt..... so many things done to women are simply inhumane period while so many others are criminal. Equality across the board is a different story.

if I say We, I mean majority of Nigerians. I'm not even part of the we, you should be able to understand what I wrote not trying to see the errors in it. If you dont agree with my point simple you can ask me to explain further or you can give your reasons for not agreeing to it.

People like you are the reason why we like in a country that would most likely always remain a zoo!
Next time, get your facts straight before commenting on a thread centered on a very sensitive topic.
I get the whole gender wars thing going on, and honestly, I don't give a fvck. Sexual abuse and all the other inhumane practices I mentioned and those I didn't, are traumatic and should not be used as a point to down females.
As a human, you should be sensitive and concerned with what millions of children are going through. Those girls don't care about what goes here. They've been treated unfairly by a world that ought to protect them. It's our responsibility to ensure that these girls are brought up in a society that cares about their werfare! If you still don't understand, then this isn't the thread for you.
As for the data, argue with Unicef if they are accurate or not.

equality doesn't exist, what we should advocate for is justice and neutrality

In India, 12million females have been aborted in the last 30years! All this as a result of the sex-selective abortion tradition there. So many things done against women are humane. It's our duty to give these women a voice.

Equality, in terms of treating males and females equally. Giving them equal oppurtunities, the chance to express and be themselves, and upholding their human rights.
