If you water the onions well you shouldn't have to worry about season.

I live on the edge of EU, my apartment in a penthouse apartment facing the sun with a lot of wind, I planted some onions in a planter in spring, summer has come and gone, I moved my tomatoes into a different location because of frost my strawberries are struggling now but the onions are hardy to the frost and wind. If you can get a barrel and fill it with rocks at bottom, loamy soil, some fertilizer some loose sand in layers you shod get a good bundle of onions.

Same applies for garlic.
