The United States has explained why it is against the election of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

In a statement issued by the office of the US trade representative on Wednesday, the world power said the WTO is in dire need of reform and must be “led by someone with real, hands-on experience in the field”.

“The United States supports the selection of Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee as the next WTO Director-General,” the USTR, led by Robert Lighthizer (pictured above), said.

“Minister Yoo is a bona fide trade expert who has distinguished herself during a 25-year career as a successful trade negotiator and trade policy maker. She has all the skills necessary to be an effective leader of the organization.

“This is a very difficult time for the WTO and international trade. There have been no multilateral tariff negotiations in 25 years, the dispute settlement system has gotten out of control, and too few members fulfill basic transparency obligations.

“The WTO is badly in need of major reform. It must be led by someone with real, hands-on experience in the field.”

OKONJO-IWEALA: I’M A TRADE EXPERT
The argument against Okonjo-Iweala has always been that she has no direct trade experience. But while addressing the WTO in July, the former minister of finance in Nigeria refuted the claim.

“I am a development economist and you cannot do that without looking at trade. Trade is a central part of development. So, I have been doing it. My whole career at the World Bank, I was working on trade policy reform in middle and low-income countries at the bank,” she said.

“As finance minister, the customs service in my country reported to me. And that is all about trade facilitation. I helped my country’s negotiation with my trade minister on the ECOWAS common external tariffs. I don’t know how much more trade you can have than that.

“So those who say I don’t have trade, they are mistaken. I think the qualities I have are even better, because I combine development economics with trade knowledge, along with finance, and you need those combination of skills to lead the WTO. I think I have the skills that are needed. I am a trade person.”

On Wednesday, Okonjo-Iweala had won the popular vote to become the next DG and had the nod of the three ambassadors saddled with the responsibility of picking the next leader of the trade body.

But at a WTO delegates meeting to discuss the appointment, the US expressed opposition to her election — the US was the only country opposing her election.

Keith Rockwell, the spokesman of the WTO, said just one member country did not support Okonjo-Iweala.

“All of the delegations that expressed their views today expressed very strong support for the outcome, except for one,” he said.

The WTO reconvenes on November 9, 2020 after the US election to decide who becomes the next DG.

This is not racism but because Nigeria is not a reliable ally. This was manifested in UN when Nigeria voted against USA and Israel.

Am yet to know the position of China.

She will be the the DG just that USA want to maybe negotiate a deal that will favour them

USA alone cannot invalidate her votes as this is not UN security council.

And EU and other countries can never allow USA to dictate now at the last minute.

If they do, it will make them look weak and stupid.

Ngozi will finally be announced the winner.

THUNDER4real:

You may be right.

The way same USA attacked adfb president.

But I think its USA vs China.

Notatribalist:
China support her.US is just trying to flex muscle

Any proof of this sir? I would very much like to see it. Thanks

According to the US NOI cannot engineer any major reform in WTO(Dafuq do they mean by this). The US only need a puppet they can control regardless of the rubbish excuse they present.
Unfortunately some deluded fellows here think US is God's own country and have failed to see through US hypocrisy because of religious sentiments. Had NOI been a Muslim, this same deluded fellows will believe she's a potential terrorist.
Whatever happens to one has the possibility of happening to all. MRS NGOZI OKONJO IWEALA is the next WTO-DG whether the devil and it's sister agents like it or not.

Sparogatively, the whole issue boils down to the political relevance of Nigeria to America, which in recent times have been close to the zero percentile.

On the other hand, South Korea is a very strong ally to the US, and this is evident in the US military presence with over 14 military bases in the country. The US disagreement to support Nigeria's candidate is more political than the 'trade-experience' reason they are presenting.

If eventually the US supports NOI, it would be because she recently just got her American citizenship.
The US is a very big player when it comes to world affairs and in no instance would be relegated.

"NOI is Nigerian-American", the western media would tell you eventually if she wins. America doesn't have much to loose, in my opinion, no matter what plays out, they would still come out winners!

If US succeed with this rigging. Then I see no reason other countries should not withdraw their membership from WTO. This is an eye opener to those who thinks Trump is interested in anything good about Nigeria. They went rejoicing and hailing Trump, simply because he insulted buhari. I wonder what they will do now that he is insulting our revered Okonjo Iweala.

Just wait a little.. In a week's time, Trump will loose the elections and the rest of the world will vote in the woman, since it seems Europe doesn't like Americas candidate that much either... If he looses, his influence will drop sharply.
