Try to understand too, the speaker requested for securities and it was granted so he will take charge of them while under him.

Have you asked yourself while police withdrew security men attached to some Nigerians recently after the SARS protest.

The family can sue whoever they want including the speaker, they can even join the security outfit.

So legally, that is how it works.

fool ,speakers don't request ,it's constitution that requests law enforcements is government to PUT in place security for the OFFICE.

Try to understand too, the speaker requested for securities and it was granted so he will take charge of them while under him. - This is an assumption. His office as speaker officially has security aides assigned to it and while he may give them stipends, he does not take charge of them as they are not under him but the DSS.

Have you asked yourself while police withdrew security men attached to some Nigerians recently after the SARS protest.- They withdrew them to boost the number of security personnel available to police the volatile environs in endSars aftermath. I don't understand how this is relevant to our discourse.

The family can sue whoever they want including the speaker, they can even join the security outfit.
- This is absolutely correct. However, the courts also reserve the right to throw out any suit that lacks legal merit.

So legally, that is how it works.- Not so sure abt this as it reads to me more like, "So emotionally, that is how it works"

I had to consult my dictionary to see if there is a new meaning to magnanimity. For you eh, when your security operative kills a man, while on duty, howbeit unjustly, and you reach out to the family, then you are being generous abi??
that's slave mentality bro!! its a responsibility/an obligation, not a favour.

Even when plane crash happens, the airline pays victims families huge sums of money. It's not out of order to ask for money from him, because the security man is his responsibility and there is no other way he can compensate them. abi he give them another son and father??

I will ignore your second paragraph, because if I want to address it, I go chop ban. Nonsense and gbajabiamila!

U just posted crap... how can u compare aircrash victims to this situation...aircrash victims are insured , so insurance companies are the ones that pay and not the airline companies... gbaja has no obligation to give them a dime ... he dint commit no crime his security did, so they security should b held responsible, the police man never said gbaja instructed him to shoot and kill ...

It is a pity most people do not know their rights in Nigeria. Ordinary 500million naira and people sre saying the family is greedy. Lol. They have not even asked enough. Just imagine the comments up here. You can see that most Nigerian are under bondage,.yet they do not know. If Gbajamila himself is shot dead, how much will his family ask? So,.going to see the family of the deceased is an act of kindness. Chai! Nigerians have being turned to zombies. What a pity.

U are the one that don't know crap... this case will b thrown out of court in an instance... the policeman acted on his own...the policeman committed the crime and not Gbaja...how do u guys even reason ...

Hmmm. If the father of the deceased can afford the service of Mike Ozekhome, what was the son doing selling newspapers on the streets then?

It must be Mike Ozhekome that approached him. When the money is paid he will get his own cut. You don't know lawyers. They buy cases.

So the DSS is above the law??

Meanwhile Gbaja is not the killer. They should sue DSS if they don't have an ulterior motive.

Why should gbajabiamila be responsible for the action of his security man? Why not sue the security personnel or his employer which is DSS? I don't see any case here for gbaja at all except I'm missing something.

I read a news report this morning on his proposal for Police Reforms in line with his promise during EndSARS.
It's a good proposal that is still being fine tuned. I pray that the final report turns out great for the Police.

When it comes to these people, it is always about money. How much is the monthly earning of the newspaper vendor when he was alive? Let's calculate it plus other things like retirement, I know newspaper vendors don't collect retirement but let's assume this is an hazardous payment for the tragic incident. Is everything up to 5 million or 10 million? Given that they have taken away the labour he would have put in to earn the money himself. These people should make their demands reasonable, if not this will serve as a deterrent to other politicians or rich people if someone die in the hands of their security operatives, they will rather deny it rather than showing compassion like this speaker did. We also learned that this unfortunate incident happened when some newspaper vendors were obstructing the convoy of the speaker. It is not every situation that one must take advantage of.

Family demands N500m from Gbajabiamila over vendor’s death

The family of Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, a vendor who died after being shot by a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has written a letter to the Speaker, demanding N500m.

This is according to a letter dated November 23, 2020, signed by the lawyer of the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

Ozekhome was given the mandate to write the letter by the father of the deceased, Okorie Okereke; and the younger brother to the deceased, Destiny Okereke.

The Department of State Services had last week arrested the operative, Abdullahi Hassan, who shot Okereke while Gbajabiamila had also visited the family of the deceased and promised to ensure that they do not suffer.

However, the family demanded more, adding that nothing could bring back the dead vendor back to life.

“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them,” the family said.

The family also asked the Speaker to ensure that the safety of vendors is guaranteed as they had become afraid to return to the streets since the tragic incident.

The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands are not met within seven days.

“Take note therefore that it is our clients’ firm instruction that in the event that you fail, refuse and/or neglect to accede to or proffer reasonable compensatory terms to our above modest demands within seven days from the date of this letter, we shall without any further correspondences from us, take appropriate legal steps to enforce our clients’ constitutional rights,” the letter stated.

OZEKHOMEN will get his own cut from that money.

This lawyer like big legal contract.

He always put himself in a big point where he can make big money.

However, the bottomline is that Ozekhomen and the victim family are fighting for justice.

Lets keep our hands cross as they do the legal works.

You are right on. I am not a lawyer but I think a competent lawyer would have done things behind the scene instead of advertising it in the open. The fact that your child was just killed in the hand of people that suppose to protect him bring you goodwill but when the first thing was to be asking for money you loose goodwill. Courtesy and good manner require Femi Gbaja.. to pay visit and empathized with the family but no law require him to do anything. They have shut down anything the speaker could have done out of the generosity of his heart and turn it into an adversarial relationship when they engaged a PDP lawyer to demand money from him. If they had work behind the scene with independent or APC lawyer they would have had Gbaja in their corner demanding higher compensation for them from the federal government who is the actual employer of the culprit.

As for those saying #500M is too much, there is no amount of money that can buy human life. The man was a newspaper vendor today he could become a LG chairman tomorrow or be the father of Nigeria future president or the grand father to America future president.
You and the poster you quoted have made very reasonable submissions. Most folks here have let emotions cloud their judgment. Gbaja is in my openion not liable. The dss is. Gbaja did the right and moral thing visiting to mourn with the family and pledging assistance. But this issue of getting a lawyer to demand 500m has spoilt amy good will. Rather gbaja will lockup now to defend himself from any further litigation.

I'm not saying the family does not deserve a good compensation in this unfortunate incident, but when they take up the matter in court with a san demanding for such a lump sum, they are moving the public sympathy away from them gradually. Court process is not emotional.

How is airline/ plane crash related to a Nigeria trained officer not a private security personal the responsibility of his principal ? Bigotry will simply not make fools use their God given brain out of sentiment or pure foolishness.

What those lawyers do is that they fight for sure cases only, and share the proceeds of the judgement. Ask odi people. Those SAN's milked them dry.

500 million for what?

That's how they instigate public office holders into corruption, because you don't expect him to pay such huge amount of money from Public funds.

They should rather petition the Nigerian Government and the police force.
