vivaladiva - spot on!!! you have just hit the nail on the head, to make it in British society, get the good well paid professional jobs, they ask a lot of questions at interviews, some technical, some personal, yes you might have the right qualifications but what about your social skills, people dont understands that what gets you top marks, i once got a job because i told the interviewer that i loved music and was sometimes a part-time DJ, it happens he was in a band as well, so at least we will have a lot to talk about, get my drift!!! its not bad these days though, many Nigerians have integrated into british society without losing their traditions, culture, its really important, to be honest, the white man controls the economy, you have to think like them to get into well qualified and highly paid roles, did not really care to be called a sell out or whatever stupid Nigerians call you, i take vacations at least 2 times a year, it broadens your horizons, you see how other people live, i have friends in every nationality in this planet, when you get exposed working for international companies, it helps your own personal skills, have to deal with different cultures and what not, there is nothing wrong in hanging out with Nigerians, it is when you limit yourself to everything African or Nigerians, believe you will suffer in the UK, you will watch the world go past you, some people get resentful but they only have themselves to blame, also living in those black ghettos, sorry, no offence, you will never catch me dead there, been there, done that, once you have reached middle class status and start living a good life, you tend to move and live in different circles!!

They are so stingy because it's not easy to make money easily in the U.K.

Well, the ones in the U.S. are no better. . .they are the same stingy folks that won't even lend you a $100 bill even if you would give it back with interest and I'm not talking about just any average Nigerian-American.

I'm talking about the rich and wealthy ones who have been here since they were teenagers.

Vivaladiva, that was one hell of a write-up, but very true. Unfortunately, very few will learn anything from it. Most will get to the 4th line and bleat "ee too long, dis one na essay sef". Lol.

@markos I assume you're a well educated middle aged male Nigerian, I'll also assume that you're a professional and while I agree that the standard of living is better in the UK I'll also let you know that if you were in Nigeria as a middle aged professional you'll definately be richer than you are in the uk, this might be due to the fact that Nigeria is the land of the ignorant/blind or it might be due to corruption, I dont really know why but its true (not advocating that you move but just saying).

I'm not an ignorant Nigerian, I went to a relatively posh boarding school in the uk, lived in Neasden (nice neighbourhood in london), and I've actually been to the british museum as well as a couple art galleries and virtually all the places viva mentioned, so I know upper middle class england and I also know they dont make as much cash as middle class Nigerians, this country's a freakin gold mine all you need is the knowledge of where to dig.

Do they have better standard of living and peace of mind than the average nigerian middle class ?

to some people cash is more important (probably to buy peace of mind and security); to others peace of mind and security is more important

Yes I've always wondered why nigerians in Uk are so tight-handed,

I always get to do the call!

They can't even make a call

does anyone agree with me?

I would love to agree with you, but can't cos of fear, so i'd just say everyone in UK only works and only knows people who works as Doctors, Lawyers, IT Consultants, Bank Managers, etc and they all earn £75,000 per annum at least, and they all live in sprawling, palatial 6 Bedroom and upward, Mansions cool

See sef, even some other nationalities, not Nigerians of course who works as cleaners, care assistants, etc earn more than Bank Managers in Nigeria and can afford to buy mansions, have a Chauffeur, a Butler, a Cook, maids, Gardeners, Nannies, etc. Yeah UK is sweet tongue
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by EngrCGam: 1:26pm On May 28, 2011
You lot living in Nigeria should go and sit down. You guys/girls dont know what you are talking about!!!

A 2bed flat cost £800/month (one could use that to pay for a flat in Nigeria for a whole year)

1liter fuel here £1.40( 400 naira) fuel there is =N=70 card.

average earnings here £1500/month. if you earn anywhere near 350k in Nigeria you are better off compared to folks here.

So as you can see our stingy-ness is justified.

In fact it is financial prudence as opposed to stingyness

@vivaladiva
i only wanted to read through the comments and was not planning on making a comment, untill i read through your comment there are a couple of points that stand out and i will like to highlight them and make my comments on them

1.the fact that nigerians who complain are hanging round people of "small minds"or people who are not achievers hence the complaints

2.the fact that nigerians hand out with and amongst their kind which in your opinion serves to limit their horizon, their mind set

3.the no one should complain about the taxes,as without the taxes the nhs and all the other facilities will not be available.

reading through your comments i get the feeling that you are one of the born and bred british-nigerians.i am sorry to say your comments points to a disconnect with the reality on ground.if the average white english professional can complain about their own country and even move abroad in search of greener pastures, then isnt it a little self serving of you to excuse the state of the country?
pls go and check the number of british born and educated doctors and other professionals who have emigrated to new zealand, australia, america e.t.c. years ago even before the advent of the economic crunch.

the fact that you have a few friends who are doing well doesnt excuse the fact that for every one of your friend there are 50 more trying to break through.
this is not just mere speculations,we all live in the united kingdom and the reality on ground is that if you work really hard the realistic chances of you attaining that pedestal as an investment banker in the city is really slim although not impossible.
i used to work in I.T and i challenge you to show me how many people of colour are employed as project supervisors and other positions of authority who are of colour never mind african descent. same goes for investment bankers, same goes for the medical profession you can count the number of surgeons of colour in the whole of the united kingdom on your hands and it is deliberate. those are the areas i know about but i am sure there are more.
did you listen to david cameron himself decrying the number of black students in oxford university who are less than 40?
is that because they only hang out with their kind or have not broadened their horizon?

you are probably the first individual i have met,who has justified the level of taxation, like you i have white friends, asian friends e.t.c and across the board everybody will love a situation where we pay lower taxes.paying lower taxes does not automatically translate to the nhs going into extinction.same for good roads,securitye.t.c

while i totally agree with you that we should broaden our hoizons, make friends across races and imerse ourselves in the culture ofthe country we reside in i will quickly remind you that losing your culture and identity is as bad as not mixing with other cultures.
the average indian is guilty of the allegations you have laid concerning nigerians from top to buttom, they have not lost their sense of self and cultural identity, but that has not stopped them from exelling in their chosen careers and professions rather they have used it to their advantage by collectively taking controll of businesses, neighbourhoods and making money while they are at it
if you have not been to leeds before ask people who live there
same for scotland with the large bangladeshi community amongst pakistanis e.t.c
east london, manchester, bolton they hardly mix with other races yet they are doing very good for themselves.
FACT the taxes we pay in the uk is one of the highest in the world, and we are not getting anything extraordinary for it,if you think we are i will suggest you visit a german hospital.

visit german roads and i promise you will change your mind.
FACT race plays a huge part on how much of a sucess you will be especially in the united kingdom, one can certainly give it a hell of a try,but thats all one can do and hope for the best.even in the police force the nuber of minority ethnic who are in specialised units have not increased over the years in spite of the stephen lawrence enquiry we know what happened to ali dezai and other minority ethnic senior police officers

FACT the rich-poor divide has been widening for a very long time, the only difference now is that the economic down turn has served to highlight it and the social welfare, benefits e.t.c has only glossed over the issue not solved it.
like you mentioned in your comment that why dont we go live in the usa if we like it better,im sorry living here was never my idea but my dad's,its not my money so i really didnt have much of a choice left to me i wanted usa or canada,as for why i am still here having spent a number of years here i really cant see myself living in another western country so from here i am moving back to nigeria in a year or two GOD willing ;-)

To be honest, you dont need to
1) Go to glastonbury
2) Madam Tussad
3) British Museum etc
to blend in or get a proper job in UK. I know people who dont even go to such places and are earning well over £70k a year, these are people who even did their uni degrees in naija, while there are oyinbos who go to all the aforementioned places are are either on low paying jobs or even on giro sef.
@op
I guess from my limited experience, people tend to get tight-fisted with their hard earned dosh when folks from naija start hassling you for things such as
1) I need a laptop so i can contact u on msn messenger or yahoo
2) I'm planning on getting married soon but dont have a job or place to stay, pls send me £'s so i can rent a place

If your friend or family are too stingy it is because of your relationship with them, Why must u start calling someone just because they travel abroad, The fact that someone lives abroad doesn't mean they are rich, some people are here on a visit or student visa and they have no right to work. how do you expect them to make ends meet. they have brother, sister and parent who are obviously closer to them than friends. they will always protect their interest first but in some cases they help people based on their relationship. If you have never been in Europe before please don't even say people are stingy. if some people look at what they are going thru they would not even spend a kobo on their parent. can u imagine urself licking some 65yr old woman pussy just to get papers. I'm grateful to allah my case is not like that but i pity people in such situation but God knows best. u cannot imagine how frustrated people are in this part of the world. if someone doesn't return your call, forget about them and work towards achieving your own goal. people only call u when they know you have positive influence on them. do not be bitter if ur friend no call and when u call them stop harassing them why them no dey call. one luv

i just think thats British way of live entirely, and moreover its expensive to call aboard from UK, only if u buying a calling card.
secondly, what is the mission of doing your calling. is not that not easy in aboard as people think . although i do call my own friends when i feel like talking , but thats once in a blue moon, although in a way UK people or let me say black people in UK lives fake life, and thats is very common to Londoners.

To those living in 9ja,  Do you remember when your family or friend first landed in the UK; the phone calls they make every now and then when they were still jobless? They had no responsibility then; they had no idea of what was to come; the reality check.  Now they got a job, and the first few months, they started sending money to friends/family. But soon afterwards, they got drove out from where they were staying. They started paying rent and faced with numerous bills.

Their phone calls to 9ja suddenly dropped due to the pressure of life. Compounding the issue are those in 9ja themselves. Each time the Londoner called to say hello, demands are placed upon them sharp sharp. This tend to limit the amount of time they call 9ja because someone somewhere is just waiting for them to call to demand money or BB.

Those in 9ja find it difficult to believe that those in the UK get broke too. And the one reason that stops them from sending money to 9ja is their immigration status. A lot are spending thousands of pounds to regularise their stay, hence, the shortage or limit to their sending money. Pray for them people, and stop nagging. Chances is that with a good paper, they'll have a stable/lucrative job, but with no papers; early morning awaits them, and thats bad for you guys in 9ja.

Peace out!
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by snowdrops(m): 7:08pm On Jun 07, 2011
the problem is Nigerian govt don't give a shittee about the poor, vulnerable and less privileged in society.
if these people were on benefits from govt say N50,000 per month then there would be less pressure on relatives abroad and those better off.
At least they pay militants N65,000 a month and boko haram may be next in line.
So in a family that is not rich, the better offs are equivalent of the govt in foreign countries as others rely on them for welfare more or less throughout life.
