It means he wants to see your parents as a "friend" for now. Just tell your mum that a guy (your FRIEND) is visiting and wants to buy something for her and what she'll like him to get for her.

The guy probably likes you, but I believe he needs a very serious relationship which may lead to marriage so he's trying to survey around and see what your family is like before shooting his shot since you guys are already friends.
