i am sure that is your territory, but i must decline. i do not enjoy neanderthal company and personally, i prefer the more cerebral contests . i believe in persuasion and debate.
clearly you have some developmental milestones to negotiate. but be careful there is a law against making threats of that sort. it is not very smart to leave a permanent record of that

what a job you got in england. i am sure your folk must be proud of you. clearly you have issues of self esteem and it makes you feel better about yourself when you put people in their places as you deem fit. in other words; a bully
i exercised my right to trade ideas on this forum clearly my ideas were either incomprehensible or disagreeable to you but they were not directed at you. you chose to respond with insolent language. now i know it is just poor social skills.

if what you are saying ,in your juvenile way,is you want the last word well i may grant you that or i may not. your foaming at the mouth however is quite predictable like i said you are out of your depth. the truth is that you do not evoke any emotional response from me so i can't swear back at you. you aren't worth the effort.

Live and let live folks!

There is no universal model for film making. In the Western cinema, you have the European arthouse model of film making as a artistic endeavour. This model of film as art appeals to higher aesthetic considerations but is not commercially viable. Its dependent on state or private foundation funding because its mostly middle and upper class people with artistic inclinations who watch these movies.

You also have the Hollywood model of commercial film making. This is a popular cinema appealling to the masses. European style film makers deride the Hollywood for excessive commercialism and being 'dumbed down' to please the lowest common denominator.

Bollywood has clearly gone down the Hollywood road. Their film industry is self-financed and targets the mass market.

On the other hand, the Francophone African film makers have chose to go the European arthouse route. Their films are mostly financed by grants from European foreign aid budgets, rather than box office takings or DVD sales. These films are watched mostly not in their native African countries but by Westerners with interest in Africa at film festivals and universities in Western countries. Due to the particular vision or understanding of Africa held by the primary target audience in the West, these movies focus on female circumcision, child soldiers, physical abuse and social oppression of African women, corrupt dictatorship and other such themes which a Western audience assumes is the only reality in Africa.

These films win multiple awards at European and world cinema events but in the francophone African countries, the ordinary people don't watch movies by Sembene Ousmane or Gaston Kabore. They watch Bollywood or Nollywoodsmiley

The choice is up to Nigerian film makers. Those who wish to make movies that they hope will win awards at Western film festivals are free to do so. Good luck to them.

Those who wish to make movies that will actually sell among African masses and will be watched mostly by Africans themselves are equally free to do so. Good luck to them.

Any body who wishes to make movies in African languages is free to do so. Ditto those who choose to make movies in English.

As I noted before, Nollywood is an open market. Any one is free to come in or go out. Willing buyer, willing seller. If any one does not like juju film with Rita Dominic crying by the river, nobody is forcing him to watch. Tunde Kelani is available for him to watch.

No one can dictate to others how to invest their money or how to make films.

Nobody should mourn louder than the owners of a language or culture. If you feel a language or culture is dying but the original owners don't seem to be perturbed, why are you drinking Panadol for their headache?

Once more, live and let live should be our motto.

Emmanuel Adedun’s paper, ‘From Yoruba to English: The Untranslatable in Selected Nollywood Movies’ generated a lot of reaction from the audience, probably because of the scholar’s position. The lecturer in the Department of English, University of Lagos, contended that English subtitling of Yoruba films contain linguistic and cultural inadequacies which causes a gap in communication with the audience. Adedun was also of the belief that the low standard of subtitling in Nigerian movies is due to lack of professionalism. Using slides from three Yoruba movies, ‘Ipile Wa’, ‘Apaadi’ and ‘Aba’ as examples, Adedun noted that there are some chants, proverbs and incantations that filmmakers find untranslatable in English.

He submitted that as a result, there are communication gaps, misleading semantic inaccuracies and embarrassing grammatical infelicities in a significant number of Yoruba films. Adedun, however, did not fail to offer some suggestions. He noted that cultural matters can and should be communicated and that Nigerian filmmakers should pay attention to subtitling. Adedun also recommended hiring of competent professionals to subtitle; and the establishment of centres and institutes of translation studies.

Olaoluwa Senayo’s ‘Igwe!!! Monarchy, Paradox and Cultural Passage in Nollywood: Some Preliminary Notes’ centred on the portrayal of the republican Igbo society as a monarchy in Nollywood movies. He argued that productions have popularised the Igwe theme to the extent that Nigerians and others erroneously believe that the Igbos are monarchical. Senayo, who disclosed that the paper is part of an ongoing research and who used ‘My Kingdom Come’ as example, submitted that Nollywood has succeeded in diffusing the concept of Igbo monarchy into Nigerian popular culture.

mr blacklion i am speaking my mind thats all . we are here engaged in the commerce of ideas hopefully to widen our perspectives.it is my right to comment on anything. nothing lugubrious about that. no one has the right to tell others what they should say or think. that is a sort of fascism
Re: Are Nigerians Pround Of Nollywood Actors & Actresses? by blacklion(m): 2:21pm On Apr 03, 2011
mr aribisala, i am not asking you not to speak your mind. only that you should live and let live, not demanding that others must do things the way that you think fit or best.

please practice what you preach and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

have a nice day.

well that is my right if i live in a country. though i doubt that i have done that in this blog so please supply one quote of an offending demand i have made.

i maintain i have not made ANY demands so please feel free to supply evidence. nevertheless when you live in a society you have a right to agitate, peacefully, for how you think society should look like and others who disagree . to do the same. it seems to me you would rather not hear opinions you do not like. well that is freedom of  speech for you.

again. name one demand i have made

The Nigerian film industry has grown and made an impact in many parts of the continent,

http://www.thestandard.co.zw/entertainment/29124-drumbeat-our-film-industry-desperately-needs-a-saviour.html

What is big in Africa today are the Nigerian films, popularly know Nollywood, the second largest film industry in the world in terms of output after India’s Bollywood. Depending on where you sit, Nollywood’s penchant for witchcraft, the occult, evil step-mothers, and treacherous pot-bellied polygamists, is either terrible stuff that confounds the stereotype of Africa as a “heart of darkness”, or good authentic material. Whatever your position, Nollywood is hugely popular in Africa

Re: Are Nigerians Pround Of Nollywood Actors & Actresses? by aribisala0(m): 2:59pm On Apr 04, 2011
i agree nollywood films are hugely popular in africa and even beyond. i believe the market is far from saturated and there is still space for new producers to enter the market and produce films to satisfy other tastes that are currently unserviced. such as mine and others like me who do not appreciate the current output. hopefully that will happen in my lifetime.

on a technical point these films as we call them are strictly speaking home videos as they are rarely produced for cinema on 35mm film. most comparison are made on the basis of cinema production but there are several cinematic productions in the west that only make it to tv and are not counted when making comparisons
i am not particularly proud of the fact that the industry is so prolific what is more important in comparing the nigerian film industry with others is revenue and market share. this is quite low
the prolific nature of the industry in nigeria does not enhance quality. it is not how many but how good. the Titanic; just one film ,has made more money than all nigerian films put together.

Their acting and storyline is soo poor it would make your eyes water,

Last wednesday I saw Nigerian version of the Bollywood hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was so horrible, it was disgusting
Re: Are Nigerians Pround Of Nollywood Actors & Actresses? by aribisala0(m): 3:35pm On Apr 04, 2011
there is room for improvement.
i think some actors are ok. the storylines can be tedious and the directors seem clueless. quite often the screenplay (filmtricks ETC) is embarassing.
i suspect this is related to a low budget - (i have read interviews of some actresses claiming they had to change clothes in a moving vehicle between locations)
and high output.
however it is a good platform to build upon and improve. in 20 years time it could be a world leader.
a lot of the commentary is on the films and not the actors as asked in the question. people are aways proud of and want to associate with success so you see nigeria claiming reluctant nigerians like SEAL and SADE. nigerians are proud of others like akeem olajuwon, kanu nwankwo ,chinua achebe because of their stature and acclaim internationally. so far nigerian actors have not achieved that level yet.
i have no doubt that they will.

The problems and challenges afflicting Nollywood are very well known and have been discussed endlessly right from the very beginning. These issues have been thoroughly argued over here on internet forums and in the newspapers and even in books. Just google 'nollywood'. No need to recycle old discussions.

Most of the Nollywood practitioners themselves will readily admit that there are many things wrong with Nollywood; some have even left in disgust and moved to other things. But the problem remains.

The question is - who will bell the cat?

Who will invest his or her own money - earned or borrowed - into the much acclaimed 'high quality' productions?

We Nigerians are always very good at talking but hopeless at walking the talk - especially once it involves putting money where our mouth is.

We all complain about the shortcomings of Nollywood.

We all complain about illiterate Igbo marketers.

Yet no one is ready to invest his or her own money to challenge the illiterate Igbo marketers by making high quality movies that will outsell the poor quality movies that the Igbo marketers produce.

Instead, we point fingers and blame the marketers for alleged cabals to monopolize the movie industry. As if the Igbo marketers have the power to prevent any one from making or selling movies.

Its always easier to blame others for our unwillingness to bear commercial risk. We want others to risk their own money but we will not risk our own.

The Idumota marketers have found a business model that works for them. They are making money from it, they are pretty content and so they have no incentive or motivation to step to a higher level. So leave them alone. Bashing and insulting them for making trashy movies does not solve the problem.

The question remains -

Who and who can actually practice what he or she preaches by investing their own money to make the higher quality films?

Shikena!

there is nowhere in the world that people do not complain and this leads to progress and innovation. criticism is not a nigerian word and it is not limited to nigerians. in my opinion nigerians do not complain enough and that is why we do not make progress. clearly this is quite opposite to what some people believe. i sense that some people feel they should have the last word no. i can arrive at the exact opposite viewpoint to yours and we still agree to disagree to come and say this has been said before so don.t say it again is arrogant and dictatorial
you need to be god to do that and you are not so if you do not like my opinion express yours but do not suggest i should not air mine.

the logic goes like this you have not invested your money in a polical party, you have not contested elections, do not talk about politics.
you are not from anambra state- what is your business that they kidnapped ngige?
the pdp has found a poliical model that works for them and they are content.
the problems of nigeria have been discussed endlessly(just google it) so leave them alone dont recycle it.
Re: Are Nigerians Pround Of Nollywood Actors & Actresses? by blacklion(m): 5:15pm On Apr 04, 2011
The difference is that the people of Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Syria and Jordan went beyond mere grumbling and complaining about their corrupt and oppressive rulers and took practical action to bring about political change. The people of Libya attempted the same but theirs has resulted in civil war. But at least they made some effort to salvage their situation.

Nigerians only grumble and complain endlessly but do absolutely nothing beyond mere words to bring about the change they desire. They all wait for a saviour with magic solution to rescue the situation via miracles.

Keep waiting for the saviour that will magically transform Nollywood.
Re: Are Nigerians Pround Of Nollywood Actors & Actresses? by aribisala0(m): 5:35pm On Apr 04, 2011
you don't know me. and you probably know less than one million nigerians. nigerians are making things happen like this medium where we are now. the movie industry is not even the biggest in idumota. it is not that important in nigeria's economy though it is socially very important
we all have differnt gifts. as a soldier if you send me to the battle front and i say my gun is not as good as the enemy's . i won't be happy if you say i should come and start making guns.
