rm94: hello great poultry farmers, i have been following this thread for some time now though not actively. pls i have an issue i want the house to help me solve. i have been experiencing stampede in my layers' farm. i lost 125 POL birds in 1 week. 17 weeks old bird precisely. Kindly help proffer a solution to this crisis as the cause of the stampede is still unknown. i practise deep litter system. Dont mention cage because i dont av enuf fund for battery cage yet. tanx in anticipation of practical contributions.
U need to get closer to the birds at night. I suggest the pen is always cold at night or there is always rat (Giant rat) invasion or any animal or notice in the pen at night.

Please fellows, I need urgent help. My pullets are dying in numbers. I have taken them for post mortem(PM) like twice the report says they have Enteritis, friable liver, slightly congested kidney, congested lungs, multiple area of congestion on the liver, greenish bronze tinge on the liver.
The problem is we've been treating these for the past three weeks with no improvement just yesterday another prescription was given and instead of a better outcome the mortality increased. Please save me.

I have used Enrofloxacin, Neoceryl, V-OX in place of Polidine and injected them with Gentamycin, Lasota and Vitaflash
Now they prescribed
1. 20% Enrofloxacin at 1ml to 2liters of drinking water for 5days or Furatadone at 20g to 100liters of drinking water for 5days.
2. Polidine in drinking water for 7days at 4mls to 10liters of water for 5days.
3. 240tablets of 200mg Metronidazole in drinking water for 5 days
After 24hrs the mortality was more than tripled.
What else can I do my experienced colleague?

u need to do sensitivity test if bacteria infection was discovered so as to know which of the antibiotics can capture but if viral disease make sure they get enough ventilation, space and let then access to lot of water in conjuction with antibiotics prescribed. do not vaccinate sick birds. God is in control. it is nor easy loosing bird

@obnelly you are right, something frightened them into stampeding. We have not discovered what it was. And there spacing is adequate in line with the standard and recommended spacing for layers in deep litter of 3-9 birds per meter square.
@condi thanks for the observation, i slept at the farm to keep vigil over the birds. But do mature feathered birds feel cold at night? Well the birds died in heaps at all the 4 corners of the pens. A pointer to stampede.

My brother, we are still here.
How are you and the poultry business. Thank you guys who have helped to keep the house going.

Well, the past few months have been quite eventful for me...some good news and some bad news too.
Let me start with the good news....I have moved my farm from the level of 500 layers to a capacity of about 2500 with the birds at different ages. and i have completed my new farm pen of 30 by 100 in a new location and hv gotten cages to house about 2000 birds. That is on d good side.

The bad side now..... the Day old chicks i got in february and i lost quite alot due to vaccine failure are now mature but are not producing optimally. The remaining ones are not doing well at all in terms of egg production and i am already selling them to market women. We cant explain why they are not doing well cos they were well cared for and have been in cages for months now.

I am currently growing another set of 1000 doc and they are already eleven weeks old now. and we got 650 point of lay from animal care on august 7 and they have started dropping but at a reduced rate because my worker didnt handle them well within their first 3weeks with us. He was underfeeding them and making away with my feeds. I have since sacked him and replaced him with someone else and the story has radically changed.

In all of these,I see hope and success in the nearest future and so no giving up...Successful business people go through all sorts before the breakthrough will come.

We are very much in the business casue we are passionate about it and will remain whether rain or sunshine.

Thank you house and lets keep the push.

God bless.

how do they die off like that at least there shuld be signs and symptoms have u check for stagnant waters around d pen house; check for mites, mosquitoes at night, fowl lice or disturbant body pests or cold temperation cause by d bird's inability to regulate internal body temp; check their diets or bad and too wet with muddy litter bedding problems caused by brownish smell wet loose droppings. Also bad dietary intakes like d feeds containing one particular too much diet or salt in diets or at worst expired and moldy feeds could as well be causing d traumatic behaviour

how old are your birds? The diseases ur entire poultry stock suffer are rear and kind of tough for any drug to treat i mean avian salmonellosis, what u need now is to practice some specialised feeding regime and imbibe trado-medical practice to the rescue. And or the cause may certainly be the strains of heavy laying or may in cases be due to too much internal fat caused by intakes of fatty dietary or someone certainly switched to layer mash feeds just when d birds are not all fully developed as per weight per age yet. Layers must hit d 1600g-1700g at 18weeks point of lay. Thats why is not never a good idea to shortchange their feeding during its growing phase.

My own occassionally stampede too due to rat or so, but no death. Do they have enof space and do they hit themselve on obstructing objects when stampeding?

Thank you Condi1704 and Agrotconsult for your input. The birds are 6 weeks old and sensitivity test has been conducted twice. It is the drugs prescribed that we are administering. I only expect a better performance than what I am experiencing.
Please Oga Agrotconsult what do you mean by specialised feeding regime and trado medical practice. I need you to throw more light please.

there is enough space for the birds. we dont know the cause of the stampede but we are being vigilant. they climb on themselves forming layers of frightened birds moving away from the threat towards one corner of the pen. the ones under the formed heap of birds suffocate and die.
regards.

I've seen my birds like that several times, and I was always lucky to be there to use broom and scatter them. They usually behave that way when there is a new noise - like a generator starting up, children shrieking like mad etc, or when there are other threats. Make it a habit to always visit the pen at midnight hrs, u may meet the actual cause one day.

Check is their is any movable material or part in the farm that can be swing into movement when wind blows across the farm house.chickens are very sensitive to sudden movement. Also try and prevent the square edge.make it curve,if dog or cat is living close to your pen it could scare them and make them stampede on one another.since it happens over night why not provide electricity in the pen.

Oga mi, i remain loyal. I have rested my poultry passion 97%. My problems are inability to afford vet for my pullet(25pcs, but all sold now), purchase cage, inadequate funds and lack of ready customer base etc. As a part time backyard farmer, i cant go to the market. But am currently raising small amount of cockerel and recently ventured into micro-rabbitry. I have been following quietly, even d Qsat cable brouhaha lol.
