The protesters were arrested on Saturday

Two lawyers in Lekki said on Saturday they would quickly move to free protesters who were taken into custody by the police on Saturday morning.

At least 13 protesters were reportedly arrested after showing up early for the protest against reopening of Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Saturday. The toll gate was the scene of a deadly shooting by Nigerian soldiers on those campaigning against police brutality on October 20, 2020.

On February 6, a judicial panel hearing cases of police brutality in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests gave its nod for the reopening of the toll facility, in a controversial 5-4 decision that immediately caused fissures amongst members.

Nigerians, however, kicked against the panel’s decision, saying it was insensitive to reopen the toll gate before victims of both the massacre and other unresolved police brutalities achieved justice.

On Saturday, 13 people were arrested when protesters streamed to the toll gate in Lekki, an affluent, water locked neighbourhood south of Lagos.

The arrests by a team of police task force drew immediate criticism from Nigerians following the development via social media.

“We condemn in its entirety the conduct of the Rapid Response Squad and Lagos State Special Taskforce of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police Force,” said lawyers Oladotun Hassan and Ayo Ademiluyi in a statement, accusing the police of “foisting an atmosphere of intimidation on the ordinary citizens of our jurisdiction.”

The lawyers said they had commenced efforts to free the protesters and ensure that their fundamental rights were not violated.

The Buhari administration has warned of severe consequences for anyone who took part in the demonstration after seeing it as an attempt to destabilise public peace.

CASH AND BAIL LAWYERS.

ANYWAY THEY ARE DOING THEIR JOBS AND ALSO GETTING PUBLICITY.

Most smart lawyers will use this opportunity to cash out and make a name for themselves.

There is nothing more important than publicity for a lawyer. That is how top lawyers survive in Nigeria.

If you can make a name for yourself through publicity, you wont go hungry.

It is a pity that Nigeria have lost the era of good judicial vibrancy when the likes of late Gani Fawenhmi, Olisa Agbakoba,Alao-Aka Bashorun etc held sway wherein even the military era of IBB, Abacha were sore afraid.

All of them would be released.
LSG is fooling herself.
If protests are to be held every Sunday for the next 2 months, will police officers keep punishing themselves watching over the toll gate?
LSG is not managing the crisis well.

Meanwhile fulani herdsmen, bandits and bokoharam are roaming the forests freely. I see another biger protest against the police force soon, I see hundreds of police men killed and dozens of stations across the country razed. This I have seen.

While I believe the protest is thoroughly unnecessary at this particular moment, I do also believe that in a democracy, there is supposed to be freedom of assembly as long as no one is deliberately breaking any law. The arrests and the heavy police presence is cowardly, and uncalled for. Makes me think the government is frightened whenever citizens try to demand their rights.

But las las, I don't understand what they are protesting for. What do I know?

How much are you getting paid for all these? Because you seem to jump on top of any thread criticising government officials.
Nobody defends the Nigerian government unless they are getting paid.

Even the government you are defending are only being oppressive because of self preservation and actually not in the interest of the people. Once they leave power they become activists themselves.

So i ask again how much are you getting paid?
