There is something called rules of engagement in a civil war....
Its not about hatred or sentiments...
Murtala was guilty if faulting it and therefore is a War Criminal...

Your best President The man that destroyed the civil service?

And purged Middle Belters from the civil service and haunted them just because Gowon is from the Middle Belt

Brigadier Murtala Muhammed on July 31, 1975 Appointed 34 year old Lt.Col Muhamadu Buhari as Governor of North Eastern State (What is known today as Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba States put together) The young Buhari must have learnt the art of persecuting people from a certain region of Nigeria just like his Fulani Brother and political god father - Murtala Muhammed did to the Middle Belters!

Muritala was the one giving the orders then, he was in charge of the Mid-West troops of the Nigerian army.

The truth was hidden for years by Hausa-Fulani controlled Military governments after the war. They made Muritala Mohammed look like a hero but he was actually a war criminal.

He couldn't face the well armed Biafran soldiers that wrecked havoc to his batallion at Abagana in which hundreds of Nigerian soldiers got killed by Biafran soldiers. So instead of using that anger to attack Biafran soldiers like him, he rather decided to massacre Asaba civilians in a heartbreaking military genocide that Asaba people will never forget.

Nigerian soldiers then were so scared of Biafran soldiers which made them rely more on British pilots air raids to pave way for them to penetrate Biafran side. The only thing they used to win Biafra was Awolowo's policy of starving Biafran children and killing of Biafran civilians instead of facing Biafra soldiers squarely.

Before you can succeed in any coup in Nigeria, you must take over Lagos, Kaduna and Enugu military commands.

These 3 commands are key places to hold, and from there you give orders to remaining military commands and they will obey.

Taking over Lagos command and statehouse is not enough.

True but he already had one leg out of the trouser, even till today OBJ is always giving testimony of how God saved him in 1976

even the ruthlessness of how a junior officer killed the head of state like that would have sent shockwave through all military commands

More confidence and more courage would have changed things

OBJ escaped by luck and destiny. He was attending a child naming ceremony in Ondo state which helped him.

The coup was never meant to be successful but a nature's way to get rid of two war criminals - Muritala Mohammed and Bukar Dimka.

Dimka was already a failed coupist and a fugitive before frolicking with innocent sex workers in Afikpo.
The point is; If he had focused strictly on escaping rather than catching some fun, probably he would have been long gone before the policemen notice his presence.

Gowon started the war.

Gowon accepted the 1966 "Aburi Accord" (reached in Goal Coast, today's Ghana) which was meant to bring peace through some agreements between Gowon and Ojukwu and Ojukwu's demands was same with today's Southern people's demand for restructuring of Nigeria to make it a completely regional government with each region being in charge of their affairs. On arriving Nigeria, Gowon briefed Northern elites and they rejected it and told him to reject it......so Ojukwu insisted that Aburi must stand or else that Eastern Nigeria will no longer be a part of Nigeria......that they cannot continue to watch their people being massacred by people they call fellow countrymen and aided by the national military while the Head of State Gowon refused to act to stop it.

That was how Ojukwu summoned all old Eastern Nigeria's elites, students, market women, traders, artisans, etc at UNN Nsukka to ask for their opinion on what to do and they unanonymously told Ojukwu that they dont want to be a part of Nigeria anymore with the 1966 pogrom in the North. Ojukwu being the then Eastern Nigeria's Governor was acting as the head of Eastern Nigeria, so he declared Biafra as an independent state out of Nigeria.

Immediately he did that, Gowon acting on the advice of British Government and Northern political oligarchs said that he have no other option than to use Police action aka Military force to bring back Biafra to rejoin Nigeria, and that was how Gowon declared war against Biafra and Biafra had no other option than to mobilize civilians, soldiers, market women and anybody from old Eastern Nigeria to volunteer as Volunteer Biafra soldiers to defend Biafra land. That was how the war started in 1967.

Biafra never declared war or invaded Nigerian territory, they only declared their independence from Nigeria to secure their own lives away from Northern massacre of Igbos in the North going on in all Northern States with Federal government doing nothing.....

It was Gowon that declared war against Biafra to force Biafra back to Nigeria through a "Police Action", a word he cunningly used to make it look like he wasn't going to use full military force to force Biafra back to join Nigeria.

You can Google more about it or find some foreign books about the Biafran war or Nigeria-Biafra war and read to know how the war started.

The same things that happened in 1966 that caused the civil war are happening today, and if not that Southern Nigerians of today are cowards, there ought to have been another civil war, this time against the Fulani and their bloody allies.

For your information, the Asaba massacre happened in 1967.

The Abagana ambush happened in 1968.

Muritala Mohammed could not have ordered the Asaba massacre because of the Abagana ambush because as at the time the Asaba massacre happened, the Abagana massacre had not happened.

But Muritala Mohammed was the person that ordered the Asaba massacre that led to the massacre of hundreds if not thousands of Asaba indigenes in cold blood. It was a chilling moment for Asaba.

Gowon did not start the war.

The Aburi Accord was ambiguous. Gowon interpreted it the way he saw it, and Ojukwu too interpreted it the way he saw it.

Ojukwu returned from Ghana, and instead of doing further consultation, he began to broadcast his own interpretation of the Accord.

In short, the Aburi Accord failed because it was ambiguous, and open to different interpretations. Gowon interpreted it differently from Ojukwu, and instead of the Accord resulting into peaceful talks, it created more disagreements which eventually led to the war.

The WAR broke out as a result of the different interpretation of the Aburi Accord meetings.

Ojukwu could not attend the supreme council meeting and gone ahead to interpret it in his own way.

Why didn't ojukwu attend the meeting?

Whether Ojukwu started the WAR or not, the truth is, Eastern Regional wanted to break out of Nigeria which was a deadly decision and exercise in futility.

Nevertheless, GOOGLE is your friend unless you want people to believe that it was removed from history to blame the Federal troops or blame Gowon for starting the war.

I would like to rest my case here.
No more discussion or argument.

Thanks for your understanding.

War Crimes...

The Federal troops entered Asaba around 5 October, and began ransacking houses and killing civilians, claiming they were Biafran sympathisers. Reports suggest that several hundred may have been killed individually and in groups at various locations in the town. Leaders summoned the townspeople to assemble on the morning of 7 October, hoping to end the violence through a show of support for "One Nigeria." Hundreds of men, women, and children, many wearing the ceremonial akwa ocha (white) attire paraded along the main street, singing, dancing, and chanting "One Nigeria." At a junction, men and teenage boys were separated from women and young children, and gathered in an open square at Ogbe-Osowa village. Federal troops revealed machine guns, and orders were given, reportedly by Second-in-Command, Maj. Ibrahim Taiwo, to open fire. It is estimated that more than 700 men and boys were killed, some as young as 12 years old, in addition to many more killed in the preceding days.

The bodies of some victims were retrieved by family members and buried at home. But most were buried in mass graves, without appropriate ceremony. Many extended families lost dozens of men and boys. Federal troops occupied Asaba for many months, during which time most of the town was destroyed, many women and girls were raped or forcibly "married," and large numbers of citizens fled, often not returning until the war ended in 1970. The total death toll during early October was in excess of 1,000, although the exact numbers will likely never be known.

Suspect[edit]

I.B.M. Haruna has sometimes been named as the officer who ordered the massacre, following a report of his testimony to the Nigerian Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission, known as the Oputa Panel.[1] This article quoted him as claiming responsibility (as the commanding officer) and having no apology for the atrocity. However, Haruna was not present in Asaba in 1967. He replaced Murtala Muhammed as C.O. of the Second Division in spring 1968.

In October 2017, the Asaba community marked the 50th anniversary of the massacres with a two-day commemoration, during which the new, comprehensive book on the massacre, its causes, consequences, and legacy, was launched: "The Asaba Massacre: Trauma, Memory, and the Nigerian Civil War," by S. Elizabeth Bird and Fraser Ottanelli (Cambridge University Press). This book, which draws on interviews with survivors and military and government figures, as well as archival sources, discusses how and why the massacres happened, and the impact of this community trauma, decades after the event.

Muritala Mohammed was a war criminal. He committed war crimes.

There are rules of engagement during war that all soldiers from both sides must obey.

1.) Don't invade or bomb religious places
2.) Don't bomb historical sites
3.) Don't kill children
4.) Don't kill unarmed women
5.) Don't rape women
6.) Don't kill the elderly unless he or she is armed
7.) Don't bomb or attack hospitals
8.) Don't bomb or attack Red Cross outfits or vehicles or relief planes/jets
9.) Don't do mass murder of civilians for any reason

But Muritala Mohammed committed crime based on 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9.

He paid the price anyway undecided

Nature used a bad man like Muritala to pay Muritala back his crime against humanity and nature used national decree to pay back Dimka for his evil roles against Biafran civilians during the Biafra civil war. I think it was a fair event of 1976
