You're very correct.

Lieutenant = Platoon,
Captain = Company,
Major = Armored/mechanised/artillery/ special company.

However, I hear that Nigerian army battalions are usually under manned. For example, instead of having at least 750 men, many I've heard about had less than 400 men.

Which AFM stipulated above pronouncement? Military command structure usually flows with situation of things.

very true because all the Awusa colonels are in office feeding fat under AC collecting dollars and doing defense attaché work in our embassies overseas living a good life while our own southern brothers are fighting and cleaning up their mess at sambissa forests

They won’t send Colonel Abubakar Buhari’s former ADC to go and command the Military police at Operation Lafiya Dole, na Southern officers be meat for them

A battalion can be commanded by a Major or Lt Col depending on the size. Same for a Division, which can be commanded by a Brig Gen or Major Gen. I know for a fact that 8th Div, (or one of the smaller Divs in Maiduguri or Yobe) has been commanded by several Brig Gens.

sometimes a Colonel can command a large battalion . it all depends on the size of the battalion and the contacts of the said officer

Col. Abubakar is a millitary police officer and not a combatant, so he can't go to war by millitary standard. Only combactant soldiers go to war unless if there is an emergency that is when noncombactant soldiers are sent to war zone.

What does a Lt Colonel do then?

A Major is the lowest field officer and rarely has business commanding a Battalion.

He should be an Executive officer in a battalion or leading a specialized unit in a battalion.
