My mind full of depression, anytime i remembered what students passed through before you can get any certificate in my dear country Nigeria. After all this struggle, someone will still find it difficult to get a job. Some will still go ahead for their masters or Phd at the end you still find yourself without job. My thoughts now was, should the less privileged person just go for ND and also acquire skill work?.

Waste of valuable time in Nigeria

Here are my thoughts:

1. Nigerian degrees are not totally useless. Yes it is challenging to get job generally, but having a certificate still gives a leverage. People still get lucky breaks every now and then. If a person has no certificate at all, the day opportunity comes, such a person can't make use of it.

2. Attending university somehow also changes the way a person thinks about life. The perspectives of the average graduate can not be compared to that of the average secondary school leaver.

3. However, in this Age and Time, we must not stick to only certificate if we don't want to go hungry. Except you study a professional course like Medicine, Law, Pharmacy etc. where one can easily set up his/her own private business after school.

4. Most courses in Nigerian Universities do not prepare students to stand alone after school. So wisdom now requires that if you're in school, you must be acquiring other skills or start doing business.

YES IT IS!
Degrees are overrated and mostly gotten through dishonest means (eg. sex for grades, machinery, cash for grades).
Only pursue a degree iff you are naturally brilliant and want to become a lecturer. Otherwise DON"T pursue.

Take me or example, after my SSCE (7As 1F in Yoruba), I proceeded to learning IT skills. Now I'm the best PL/SQL developer in the whole South-West, if not Nigeria!

wink wink

I know people here might doubt you..

But I don't, coman mentor me sad

No

Improve on your degree

Add relevant skill set

Start from somewhere ( volunteer / intern / low pay job. ) And then move on

Better still learn and start your own business, that's why you're a graduate , you should have the ability to create

Me want to add more to my degree and other certificates
Only if you are fulani/hausa you are sure of enjoying those skills acquired in nnpc, npa, security printing, cbn, dpr, nacho, efcc, NCC, immigrations, military, police, nerc, etc and even politics, but if u are from southern part your skills can only help you to be self made

Never go to school for the sole reason of getting a job, instead go to school to gain knowledge, broaden your social network and learn social skills like public speaking, and all that- Do not expect to be rewarded with a job after graduation because of your paper certificate.

Instead, while in school, learn a life skill- to be an electrician, auto mechanic, welder, tailor, hair dresser, plumber, draftsman, truck driver, barber or culinary specialist- all that.

Please chose one of the above and learn it - and while you are doing your NYSC, look for somewhere to work for free so you can sharpen the side skill you learnt while in the university for 4 years - For instance, you can work for free in a local mechanic shop on saturdays from 8am to 2pm in the state you are posted to and once NYSC is over - you are the winner

IF you get a job with your degree, it’s all good

IF you don’t get a job with your degree - you create a job for yourself with your life skill

Another easier option is learn the skill immediately you complete SS3 - learn the skills first while you prepping to go to University - after 2 years of learning work, you go to University and while you are in University you work only on saturday from 8am- 2pm to be gaining proficiency - when doing your NYSC, you should use that time to register your own business of the skill you learnt and after NYSC you are your own Boss- the degree you have will make u more successful because you won’t be like the average mechanic who is an illiterate- your ways of conducting business will be different and your clients will be the rich and famous because they won’t be insulting you because they know you are educated- and you will manage your resources better too than the average road side mechanic

That’s a win - win siatuation - learn a life skill o

In Nigeria, most things are a waste of time. Going to Church is a waste of time. Going to Tertiary institutions is a waste of time.

Hmmmmm. I agree that too much theory is what we do in most Nigerian tertiary institutions with little or no practical application in real life.....but then, I don't agree that the degree is totally useless. For a person that really has interest in Engineering, having that degree gives you a foundation. It may not be enough but it's something. And should one decide to learn a skill like Bricklaying or Electrical works (there's money in those skills by the way), having a qualification will make one talk better with clients...

Some degrees are still very useful but others aren't even useful to the society talkless of the holder. Acquiring such degrees is a waste of time and resources. Don't ask me for examples.

You sound like degree is more important than money. if they can buy things and you can't for now don't you think that they can access places later also if they can't access it now, afte all making money in Nigeria is more difficult than aquirering a degree in Nigeria

It's never a waste of time. Your degree is meant to show your quality as an individual having completed the university. It is meant to impact your views about life and knowledge in a specific area of specialization as well as how you relate and communicate with people. The issue with our degree is that it has lost value as our standard of education has degraded beyond acceptable standards. So, companies will readily accept individuals with degrees from recognized and highly ranked universities compared to those who schooled win nigeria. The reason is not far fetched. This is because the environment and standard of schools abroad is very high.

Students are exposed to real life scenarios and are mostly taught by professionals who have had years of practical experience and research in those areas.

You are paid for the certificates you have and skills. All over the world ,graduates earn more than non graduates in some fields aside I.T.its only in the i.t sectors that certificates dont really Matters .You dont get skills in the University or poly. You get IT through Experience when working or self developed.every country has the skills IT wants .So Most of Our graduates dont have the skills needed abroad.Unless someone WHO has Developed himself peraonally. As an Engineering Student ,you learn theory in school, you are expected to have some skills to Back your certificates. This skills are Not obtained in schools .If you apply for Jobs and they ASK you to be able to use AutoCAD or any softwares . do you expect lecturers to teach you to use how to use softwares, you are expected to learn your self or thru Seminars or anyhow. As a technician WHO graduated in polytechnic ,you are expected to be good practically,be skilled in using Hands .Most of Our youth Run after Money and wont Just sit down to acquire skills to Backup their certificates .That is why the certificates are useless to them .They cant do anything with IT.its Not the fault of the universities.students should Strive to Develop themselves, certificates are Just mere Papers when you dont have any skills
