Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has declared his intention to negotiate with bandits to ascertain their grievances and the way forward.

Umahi made the declaration on Friday in Abakaliki at the presentation of 40 Toyota Sienna vehicles and 20 Hilux vans to security agencies for enhanced operations in the state.

The governor directed local government chairmen and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to identify the bandits and present them for debriefing.

“I won't talk to the bandits and empower them as we cannot continue to kill ourselves and destroy public infrastructure.

“The bandits are our children and I am pained when they or the security agencies are killed.

“I want to ascertain their grievances against the Ebonyi or federal government, collate the facts for discussions to commence,” he said.

He expressed disappointment over the announcement of guidelines for the 2023 elections, noting that the nation was at a crossroads for such engagement.

“Let us forget about the 2023 elections with the leaders taking responsibility for the situation and discussing a way forward.

“No one takes money to the grave and when we hear a gunshot, we will run and abandon the money we amassed.

“This is not a period to discuss political parties but ensure that the resources of this nation which can truly transform it is judiciously utilised,” he said.

Umahi debunked the insinuation that members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) or Eastern Security Network (ESN) were after him, insisting that he has discharged his duties to the people.

Dr Kenneth Ugbala, Secretary to the State Government said that the presentation was the first batch of the 100 sienna vehicles and 40 utility vehicles to be procured for security agencies.

“The governor has fully paid for the 40 sienna vehicles and 20 Hilux vans being presented as the recipients are charged to judiciously utilise the vehicles.

“I want to thank the governor for this feat despite the prevailing economic challenges as he had earlier distributed 70 utility vehicles to security agencies in 2019,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the heads of various security agencies, top government officials, youth groups among other stakeholders, witnessed the presentation ceremony.

I'll first like to address something I consider an error in the Governor's writeup.

In Nigeria as of today, every mallam now has his own kettle.
What I mean is, it is wrong to address Unknown Gunmen/ESN/IPOB as Bandits.
Bandits are exclusively reserved for the killer herdsmen.

Now back to the topic, is Umahi telling us he wants to negotiate with people he considers terrorists?

I think it's a futile effort.
Nnamdi Kanu has made his submission and I don't think anything outside secession would make him change his mind.

It's either you agree with Kanu or engage in a full blow war with his people.

The umahi that always dish out threat, the umahi that only no how to use force and military might have now mellowed down like an ice..

Indeed the kingdom of God suffereth violent and the violent taketh it by force...just a week shooting no bombing ooo,see umahi jittering like an okirika pant.. hahahaha..

Wike will be next....I remember vividly when the igbos were begging the police and sodiers to reduce the number of road blocks in SE.. hahahaha today same military forming hard men then are now running from the road like antelopes... hahahahhahahah

Some time it's good to be stubborn and brutal..

In all that let's say no (yes) to violent..

Gumi's template. After all, some Northern Governors are favourably disposed to it. We can all agree that the East has finally learned something from the North.

Please create jobs for them. The way they are flocking to Anambra as if it is Amelika is really becoming unbecoming. Biko sit their arses down and give them jobs.

If you are from Imo and know someone whose Keke was stolen or snatched away over there, kindly D M me. It is one business these Abakiliki boys do in my dear Anambra state

I see political interest in that statement. Umahi is surreptitiously protecting his political ambition by that carrot measure, just like Tinubu had tried so far protecting his own by keeping quiet. All these are tactical measures not to jeopardize future political hopes.

The foolish governor is about to adopt the template of katsina, sokoto, zamfara and Kaduna, he just made Ebonyi a major target for these terrorists with this senseless press release....

There is something strange going on it seems the moment you join APC you loose every sense of reasoning and you become a dullarrd automatically....

Which kind daftness is this governor Dave Umahi? Is this sycophant of a governor not in Nigeria when even the NW governors like El Rufai(Kaduna), Masari(Kastina) were lamenting their foolishness in granting these criminals amnesty?
