Moving on from a failed relationship is never easy especially if it was intense with high expectations and hopes. Sometimes it is so hard partners return to thier ex just to save themselves the stress.

It is a challenging process and can be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting and draining. However, once you do, you will realise it’s the best decision you ever had to take. Here are some few steps to help:

1. Accept that the relationship is over: Accept the fact that it is over, there is nothing more to mend and definitely nothing more to do with them. Keep reminding yourself that you are free and it’s finally over.

2. Let your emotions free: Yes, let them loose. Lock your self inside, cry all you can, regret all actions, recount all the good and bad, vent all of your anger and pour your heart out. You will feel better afterwards.

3. Count your blessings and loses: while these might seem wrong, it’s actually a way to take inventory of all things good and bad. What you have gained and lost from it. What you did right and the ones you got wrong. Things you should have done and what you should never have done. These may help with your next, it you decide to date again.

4. Remove everything that reminds you of them: Remove every single thing that reminds you of your ex. Be it photos both on your phone and hard copy, gifts, videos and everything else that takes you back to them. Be left only with your memory of them to struggle with.

5. Hangout with friends and family: You need someone to talk to and people around you to make you feel happy and loved. Hang out with your friends and family, share moments with them, talk to them about how you feel, let them help soothe your feelings. Go on trips with them if you can, spend time with your loved ones and feel loved again.

6. Learn to be single again: Do the things you did before you started dating, concentrate on work, if you are not working yet, get a job or learn a skill. Get your mind occupied with something positive and productive. Learn to do things on your own and be happy with it, that way you make little progress each day.

7. Give yourself time: Everything heals with time. It would seem you you are making progress and sometimes it would seem you are not. Just give yourself some time. You will get over it.

8. When you are ready, date again: When you have finally gotten hold of your self, in control of your emotions and you are ready to give love another trial, date again. This time, take your time and define what you want out of the relationship, study your new partner and nurse the love slowly, allowing it to progress at your own pace. This will give you more control over your emotions and the relationship.

Try these steps and hopefully you will feel better as the days go. It won’t be a jolly ride but you will be glad you went through it in the end.
