The only course that is almost guaranteed in Nigeria that you will be in the same field after graduating is med. Doctor. The remaining ones na just get good grades and apply for jobs.

I would even suggest he studies easy courses like G & C, Integrated Science, Primary Education or Early Childhood where minimum preparation would guarantee a fair grade so he can have time to learn a skills than studying that useless course that is difficult for nothing.

He's better off with geology/Geophysics. There are little to no jobs in the oil industry. PE is too streamlined,I'll never advise anyone to study PE as a first degree. I'm studying PE and in my finals and I know better now,wish I had someone to put me through earlier on.

Exactly bro I know he won’t know now cos he will be eager to enter university but the truth is it’s really not how far but how well. The year I wrote jamb I was to enta medical laboratory science passed very well but that year no med lap in my sch so they provided me with biochemistry I’m done with sch and I want to go back and study medical laboratory again or nursing . I’m speaking from experience.All this courses are not for Nigeria

Geology is a very good course. Very versatile. Who says you must be limited to Nigeria as a Geologist?
If I didn't do what I did I would have studied geology.

My question is how did he get the course in the first place?
If he applied for it and was offered then he has his plans.
If on the other hand it was not his choice then I advise he goes for his heart desires, try jamb again.
If again, he is considering the course with the hope of working in the oil and gas industry like majority of people studying/studied the course then he has 89.9% chance of being disappointed.

I'm a geology graduate. Geology is a good course as there are other aspects of geology you can specialise in that doesn't necessarily require you to work in the oil and gas industry.

In Nigeria, you can study anything and work anywhere.

Be prepared to become a geobanker I'm a geologist but I'm now in IT related field. I wish to work in my field of study anyways. Solid minerals will be the next big thing in Nigeria. Cabals have no interest in it yet.

I have family relations who studied electrical engineering and mass communications in school.
But today they are working in the bank today.

Look at the job market here back home before you further your studies.

Some courses here in Nigeria doesn’t worth it unless you have connections that can get you job. Look at courses like

Marketing
Public Administration
Political science
Business administration
History

Theater arts (Also you don’t need a degree to work in movie industry)

Religion studies
Geography

Biochemistry ( unless you want to further your studies in medical fields or travel abroad)

These courses are almost worthless in Nigeria job market today because 3 quarters of Nigerian unemployed and underemployed candidates have degree in one of those courses.

Some of these courses not going to get you good salary even if you travel abroad

Don’t get me wrong some people still get good job with degree in one of those courses especially those people that have connections. Stay away from those courses if you don’t have connections.

Please don’t come here to tell me that God can do it. We all know that nothing is impossible with God but we need to look at job market before going to school.

Also it will be better to go to a trade school than a conventional school if you are over certain age in Nigeria because most of these companies want young fellows that are less than 30 years in age. So go to trade school to learn a trade that will help you.
