Alusiizizi:Yes it is your opinion but it is illogical and lacks imagination and assumes too much Insight itself is a function of Mind. Yet physics cannot tell us anything about mind. Even physics would not tell you that it is the only route to anything You assume that the human mind is the highest level of mind or single cell organism cannot gain this "insight" Who is to say that higher minds than the human mind do not exist and that such minds cannot gain insight into phenomena EFFORTLESSLY? You are making a very dogmatic claim that has no basis in logic or reason 1 Like |

I'm a graduate of physics, with a cgpa of 4.1 Currently working with Caverton, and I have plans of going for a program in aviation(ATC) . Of which physics is one of the requirements. If possible, go for a masters in aero physics. Thing is physics no friendly at all. If your head no Carry am, go for something else(to avoid plenty carry over). But if you really want to study it, do your research properly, the opportunities for a physicist, are numerous. I hope you choose wisely. Cheers 1 Like 1 Share |

I don't comment online but let me do this, I also had this mentality, I wanted to study medicine, i was given admission to study physics, I was reluctant to go, church elders were called to convince me to go and I thank God for it today, I finished serving in 2019, got a good paying graduate trainee job as a data analyst(the company picked me specificallybecause of my numerical background), I left earlier this year and currently a Graduate trainee in a oil n gas company...all because of physics. Make sure you get a 2:1 and hope you are young(around 25 or younger by the time you'd be done with service). There are a lot of options for you especially in data science/analytics doghorp: |

doghorp: No sir, it is not a useless course. You can fare well in Engineering Physics Nanotechnology Material science Engineering Smart Engineering systems Embedded systems Complex systems engineering Astrophysics Industrial electronics Microelectronics systems... The list is non exhaustible, prepare yourself to leave Nigeria for your MSc in one of the course listed above and come back as a big shot and invest in Nigeria. Remember me when you achieve this feat. Btw, I studied Industrial physics and I work with a telecommunication infrastructure provider but to quit soon for a master in smart systems engineering Cheers, 2 Likes |

doghorp: Don't mind all those telling you physics is irrelevant. Physics is very relevant. However, don't expect that the stuff you're taught in school is still relevant. So, if you want to make money from physics after school, you need to hit the internet, identify the trending and in demand fields of physics in today's world. Then go to YouTube and watch courses. You may also try Edx for courses. That's if you have a strong passion for physics and you want to earn a living with physics. Else, you may do like most other people; dump your certificates and start a business or learn a completely unrelated skill like web development, graphic design, tailoring etc. |

The only valid advice from me is, further your degrees to Ph.D and try to get a lecturing Job either abroad or a well to do a well to do Private University in Nigeria, so you would probably become a Professor that's is the only Income earning profession I know of if you don't want to deviate to Engineering or I.T (coding and programming,) |

haslaw:You and COREN need to shed this archaic mentality. I wonder why Nigeria and our educational structure is so rigid. As for your question, some of them were my professors in school and some were colleagues at work. An in case you are wondering, they are not based in Nigeria but in the UK which most of you at COREN only dream of. By the way, I am COREN registered. 1 Like |

doghorp: It is not. Ensure, you get a 1st Class or a 2.1. Contribute to research papers- journal articles, conference paper or an academic article on Medium or The Conversation. Learning a programming language, coding, data analysis skills, etc. Get your IELTS done. Then look for a MSc abroad. You will get one. Leave and pursue a MSc & a PhD. You can get a PhD, fully sponsored, if you have a 1st Class. The world will open up to you. 1 Like |

Re: Is Studying Physics Actually A Useless Course In Nigeria? by aribisala0(m): 2:07pm On Jul 12, 2021 |
feedthenation:To some extent it is an artificial argument. We all study physics to one degree or another. Even if we do not study it we are aware of it and that is why some study it more intently We are aware of space ,matter, gravity ,electricity and momentum. We are aware of applications of this phenomena e.g. car brakes/accelerators, light switches and cooker thermostats Boxers , footballers hunters , soldiers are all aware of these phenomena The distinction into what is physics , chemistry biology etc is entirely man made. Matter , space and energy are not aware of those distinctions and phenomena including "life" just happen 1 Like |

doghorp: This question of yours and those advising you to abandon the course simply shows that you may be in the university, the university isn't yet in you. Apart from your lectures, what other things do you read? Education is more than that paper in your hand called degree by the ignoramus, the real degree is a combination of the knowledge in whatever course of study you're into, and relevant information about what's going on around you and in the world. This is the problem of education in Nigeria. Physics is the heaviest and the most diversified course in the whole of science and engineering. The toughest if you need to know. So if you're having better grades thus far in your school, count yourself lucky but ignorant You had better make use of that smart phone in your hand to know more about the world, and leave the camp of the Joneses in Nigerian schools. 1 Like |

aribisala0: As long as the universe can be reduced to fundamental particles and their interactions then you are wrong. The mind is made of neurons. Neurons are made of (organic) molecules, molecules are made of leptons and hadrons(electrons, protons and neutrons). Electron/nuclei interactions are mediated by the electromagnetic force. Neutron/Proton consists of quarks and inter-quark interactions are mediated by the strong force. This whole complex is described(tentatively) by the standard model of particle physic. So you see, everything experienced and everything that **can** be experienced can be reduced(tentatively) to particles and interactions, which are **tentatively** described by the standard model of particle physics. I use the qualification "tentatively" because even the standard model is demonstrably incomplete. Why so? Because it is built with the assumption that gravitation(as described by the general theory of relativity by Albert Einstein) does not exist. The reason that this is so is at least 2-fold. 1) The standard model without any account of gravity can describe with unprecedented accuracy the results of all know high energy particle experiment. 2) A comprehensive theory that accounts for both quantum physics and gravity is a puzzle that has eluded at least five generations of some of the most powerful minds in physics, but we yet forge ahead driven by the hope that one day, that this "mother of all theories", a "theory of everything" will eventually be obtained, and at such a time, everything and anything, including your music, consciousness and such will be reduced to nothing more than particles and interactions. Infinite variety of manifestations, one physical law. God is truly great indeed!! |

If you're leaving this country. it's a good course. With a physics degree you can: - apply for masters or certificates in engineering, physics, environment, - apply to medical school - apply to law Even in Nigeria, a good physics teacher makes 100k to 200k based on salary from a top school plus from lessons. Future physics courses will need physics teachers, lecturers and professors. You would need a physics degree for that. |

Hello, who says you must be a teacher as a Physics graduate...lie. I graduated from he dept of Physics of University of Ibadan. I even had an MSc with same Uni. Presently, I am a strong hand in the ICT Industry with specialty on IBM Infrastructures and Solutions. My Physics background really pave this way for me. It really prepared me for this. As a Physics student back then, I had always know I would end up becoming an IT Specialist. Bros., you have a great future before you as a Physics Student. Enjoy what you are doing and trust God to lead you after your first degree. Cheers 1 Like |
