I currently work in one of the Third Generation Banks as a full staff. Currently I am on the second level in the sales department, salary is good, being considered for promotion which hasn't come in a while, based in Abuja with family and all.

Got an offer with a better 3rd generation bank. next level in a different department, higher pay but will have to relocate to Kaduna. Report directly to a Group Head, will have a dedicated car but greater responsibility.

The current place is like my comfort zone, I'm well known and I've been here for Seven years.

Please advice whether to move or not.

I'm not a former banker but being an extetnal auditor I'm familiar with the internal workings of banks.

Don't move; if you do you'll struggle...first you're moving to a new department then your moving to a new town where you do not have a strong network and will have to build one from the ground up.

Another issue is that your new boss may feel you have been sent to understudy him so you can replace him.

In addition to my aforementioned points Kaduna is an inferior city when compared to Abuja.

If you were single and at the early stages of your career I would have advised you to take the risk but the current situation is that you have a family to feed and the economy is very hard now!
Re: Dilemma: Advise From Experienced Bankers Needed by maatsuku: 5:49pm On Aug 13
1. You already acknowledged that you would be moving to a better organization.
2. You also acknowdledged that you would be given your next level which is an advantage.

I advise that you take the offer. My only reservation is you changing departments. If its to Operations then i would advise you stay where you are due to stagnation in most banks. There is better career advancement in sales department. If you are moving to another segment within the sales department then I will advise you take the opportunity.
All the best bro.

I will advice you move from your comfort zone for the new experience. That is the way to grow in the banking industry bro.
KD to Abuja is not that far, you can be coming home weekends to check up on family and all. The city center in Kaduna will surely be safe security wise.

I've once been in this same situation of yours in the past, I decided to stay in my comfort zone when I got another offer in another bank. I was so comfortable nothing will happen to me but 4 months after I rejected the new offer, unexpected happened and I was let go of my so to say comfort zone. Going back to what I rejected, I was told no chance again.

Like someone mentioned earlier, you only grow in banking by moving from one bank to the other which also include locations. In fact we have so many scenarios where you can come back to that your bank with higher responsibilities in future...

Also of utmost important is PRAY about it for God guidance too
Thank you very much. This is really helpful

Leave your comfort zone. You're lucky it's not to your detriment in this case, buh with greater responsibilities and motivation too which gives you an opportunity to prove yourself buh don't forget to count the cost of relocation especially cos you've got a family.
I may not have to move with them. My wife has a business in Abuja and we have a fairly affordable accommodation here.

What do you mean by Different department, is it still Marketing?

You body language suggest it is as you mentioned being know for 7 years in Abuja.

Clarify the new department in the new Bank.
.

Current responsibility is direct sales to bring in and manage deposit. New role is to sell ebank products to existing customers and follow up on usage.

Yeah it is another aspect of sales, a new one actually

I think you should go but you have to be sure of your security, the security situation in the core north is not advisable for relocation though.
Re: Dilemma: Advise From Experienced Bankers Needed by AliyuMahdi9: 6:05pm On Aug 13
Ok.

1. E-banking is easier than direct sales, onboarding existing customers to the bank's channels will not be so hard, in no time you will hit your KPIs

2. If you are a Christian I will suggest staying in Kaduna South , if you are a Muslim , I will suggest Kaduna North.

Standard Accommodation is Expensive in Kaduna South, while in Kaduna North it's relatively cheaper

3. You don't have to move you family to Kaduna Immediately, ALWAYS use the train to shuttle b/w Abuja and Kaduna till you relocate your Family ,if you want to relocate them anyways.

4. Transportation in Kaduna Is Cheap, but since you have a car attached to you, then you may not need to be boarding commercial.

If the car is a Status Car then you good, but if it's a Pool car, then you may need to bring your car from Abuja. But when moving your car to Kaduna, please pay people to bring it for you.

5. I will advice you to go for the new Job with the Higher Pay and a Promotion.

Bankers have been stagnant on the same grade for over 5-7 years, you are lucky to move to the next grade.

NB: There is Insecurity Everywhere, just at there is in Kaduna,in the case of Kaduna you only hear of such at the outskirts not in town where you are posted to. This should not hamper your Professional Advancement.

I believe the Bank you and currently working and the one you are considering to go , all have Branches in Maiduguri abi?

Talking as an ex banker with donkey years experience.

Grab hold of the opportunity and move quickly.
In banking industry, make more money as quick as possible and invest it in shares and real estate.

Because tomorrow is no guaranteed for your job type. Anyday, anytime, any new management may throw out half the staff.

If i may ask, which part of kaduna are you posted to?, I know of many bank branches here in kaduna that are doing very well. I guess you are considering your safety here cz of all you have been reading and hearing but i can assure you that you will be fine once you keep a simple and low profile. Most people who are picked from their homes are snitched upon by informants

If you were single, I would have advised you to go for it. But now, your capacity to take risks has reduced.

Notwithstanding, giving the demographics of your proposed new location, are you convinced that you could drive sales like you are currently doing now?

If yes, shoot your shot.

You will not be in banking forever. Take the job with the better pay. Be wise with the added income. Increase your savings, let your expenditure remain where it is.
Use the extra income to establish your wife's business or your plan B business.
Build your savings/investment for the future.
Think long term.

With the way inflation is going, you will need the increased pay just to even maintain your current standard of living.
Forget all these people that have never left their states. A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.
You are due for promotion where you are, I'm sure you have colleagues who have not smelt promotion for 5 years.

Trust me, you are going to find out that life in Kaduna is more comfortable than in Abuja.

Working in Abuja is like working in a whole state, but in Kaduna, just Kaduna city, housing and food is so convenient. Very soon you will have enough savings to start building your own home.

Las Las Gov Elrufai will be happy to receive a rich guy like you on the taxpayers list.

Please come to Kaduna

Negotiate with your boss for a higher salary/position and other incentives by telling them of this offer. Relocating to Kaduna in light of this religious extremities is not what I'd advise anybody to do.

Aside security if your branch isn't at the heart of Kaduna, I see no reason why you should not move.

Reporting directly to the GH will give you more visibility bankwide.

However, ask these questions before moving and be satisfied with the answers you get.
1. How strict are they with their performance metrics?
2. Is there any room for probation when you aren't getting your figures?
3. How often do they promote staff?

Your fact is not based on the reality on the ground. There are Christians living in Badiko, Kurmi-Mashi, Hayin banki, Kawo, Mando, Ungwa rimi, these areas are some of the major Kaduna north residential

Go to Kakuri, Nassarawa, kudenda, gonin-gora Sabo, maraba Rido which is predominantly Christian residential area, you will find Muslim living there.

When was the last time you heard about religious violence in Kaduna besides 2000 and 2001?
Even during election, Kaduna is more safe than your state. 2009 was a bad year that will not be repeated.
Re: Dilemma: Advise From Experienced Bankers Needed by AliyuMahdi9: 10:13pm On Aug 13
All these places you Mentioned , have had Christians and Muslim residing there even before the 2001 crisis , even within those areas territories are "unofficial" marked.

People in those areas did not move there in between now and 8 years ago.

The fact is , Kaduna is divided alone religious line.

I advised someone coming to Kaduna about the real situation on ground which is facts
