According to a criminal complaint, a 19- year- old male charged in New Mexico with having an incestuous connection with his mother told investigators on August 11, 2016, that he believed he could take care of her and keep her safe from abusive men like others in her past.

Caleb Peterson made his statement to police after he and his mother, Monica Mares, were charged with incest in February.

Caleb believed that if he was there to look after mom, she would no longer have to deal with violent individuals, and he would look after the household and his younger siblings, according to the complaint.

Peterson told Albuquerque television station KOB on Tuesday that he wants people to know about his mother’s relationship. He turned down the opportunity to be interviewed on television.

Both the mother and the boy will be tried separately by a jury on one count of incest. Mares’ trial is slated for August 25th, while Peterson’s s is set for September 16th, according to court documents.
