Are Women More Emotional Than Men? by bukatyne(f): 11:47pm On Sep 04, 2021 |
MODIFIED: Caveat: Please read the OP before you comment. Good day peeps This thread was inspired by recent exchanges with NL members on the topic. All through ages, we have heard that women are more emotional than men which implies men are more logical than women. Interestingly, this alleged ability for women to be ‘more emotional’ is perceived from a negative point of view i.e. whenever women are said to be ‘more emotional’, it is seen as a disadvantage. EMOTIONS: What are emotions? Emotions are biologically-based psychological states brought on by neurophysiological changes, variously associated with thoughts, feelings, behavioural responses, and a degree of pleasure or displeasure. We can also say that emotions can be defined as "a positive or negative experience that is associated with a particular pattern of physiological activity. Examples of emotions/ psychological states are Acceptance, Affection, Amusement, Anger, Angst, Anguish, Annoyance, Anticipation, Anxiety, Apathy, Arousal, Awe, Boredom, Confidence, Contempt, Contentment, Courage, Curiosity, Depression, Desire, Disappointment, Disgust, Distrust, Doubt, Ecstasy, Embarrassment, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Envy, Euphoria, Faith, Fear, Frustration, Gratification, Gratitude, Greed, Grief, Guilt, Happiness, Hatred, Hope, Horror, Hostility, Humiliation, Interest, Jealousy, Joy, Kindness, Loneliness, Love, Lust, Nostalgia, Outrage, Panic, Passion, Pity, Pleasure, Pride, Rage, Regret, Rejection, Remorse, Resentment, Sadness, Self-pity, Shame, Shock, Shyness, Social connection, Sorrow, Suffering, Surprise, Trust, Wonder, Worry etc. Looking at the examples (the whole seventy-five of them) above, we would agree that these psychological states are not peculiar to women or experienced by women more (which is what would qualify them to be more emotional). A beautiful example of men displaying emotions is during sports aka football. Watch a match (qualifiers or finals are goldmines) and watch men display raw and strong emotions: rage, euphoria, sadness, passion, hope, joy, pride etc. LOGIC: Logic is reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity. It can also be defined as a method of making decisions that uses sound and rational decision making to find the best conclusion. There are majorly three types of reasoning in logic: 1. Deductive Reasoning (Conclusion guaranteed): A deductive argument is one whose premises are intended to guarantee the truth of its conclusion. In other words, a deductive argument seeks to reach its conclusion by logical necessity. For instance, the following argument is deductive. Examples of application is the field of Mathematics. • Victoria is tall. (1) • Victoria has brown hair. (2) • Therefore, Victoria is tall and has brown hair (this is the only natural conclusion) A conclusion can be sound (true) or unsound (false) depending on the truth of the original premise (in the example above, the referenced Victoria can be short therefore the conclusion is unsound). However, a conclusion is valid or invalid depending on the deductive inference therefore an unsound conclusion can be valid. In the example above, the conclusion is valid even if Victoria is short (wrong premise). A real-life application of a valid conclusion that is unsound is the below: • Men are polygamous in nature (A) • Naturally polygamous people cannot be martially faithful (B) • Therefore, men are polygamous and cannot be martially faithful. Deductive reasoning is limited such that it cannot predict the future and all premises must be correct else it would lead to an unsound conclusion even if valid. It is however the most accepted type of reasoning in Logic. 2. Inductive Reasoning (Conclusion most likely): Inductive reasoning begins with observations that are specific and limited in scope, and proceeds to a generalized conclusion that is likely, but not certain, in light of accumulated evidence. The conclusion of inductive reasoning is said to be cogent (the evidence seems complete, relevant, and generally convincing, and the conclusion is therefore probably true) or not cogent instead of Valid(true) or invalid(false) because it is not possible to be 100% certain of the conclusion. Application includes scientific experiments: gathering evidence, seeking patterns, and forming a hypothesis or theory to explain what is seen. Inductive Reasoning while not 100% accurate can increase human knowledge and be used to forecast the future. Example: • Victoria is tall. (1) • Tall people are generally good at basketball. (2) • Therefore, Victoria is good at basketball. (Conclusion: not necessarily true) 3. Abductive reasoning (taking your best shot): Abductive reasoning typically begins with an incomplete set of observations and proceeds to the likeliest possible explanation for the set. Abductive reasoning yields the kind of daily decision-making that does its best with the information at hand, which often is incomplete. Application includes medical diagnosis and ruling a Legal case. The abductive reasoning can be creative, intuitive, and even revolutionary. Example below: • Victoria is tall (1) • Victoria has brown hair (2) • Therefore, Victoria must have a tall or brown-haired ancestor (conclusion: at best an assumption since we have no information about any of her ancestors.) Emotions and Logic are the two thought processes that drive decision making. Research has shown that most decisions made are from an emotional point of view which brought about the wave of EI: Emotional Intelligence and EQ: Emotional Quotient. The brain then rationalizes our decisions i.e. help to provide a reason (Left-Brain Interpreter). The emotional thought process is currently further researched and applied in Sales, Marketing and Medicine. To add more context, I will highlight another stereotypical statement about men & women: “Women are moved by words while Men are moved by sight” This statement is dating advise 101 and used to explain almost every situation. However, let’s do a deep dive: a. Women are moved by words: True, does not mean they are not ‘moved’ by sight either. A handsome power dresser would be appreciated by a lot of women and there is a reason artists (who sell their looks in addition to their art) have loads of female fans who think they are ‘hot’, ‘sexy’, ‘zaddy’ bla bla in addition to their performance. Also looking at things made for women shows the manufacturer trying to entice women by the appearance of the item. Our bags shoes, articles of dressing, household items, gadgets, fashion accessories, books etc. are more visually appealing. Verdict: Women are also moved by sight. b. Men are moved by sight: True, does not mean they are not ‘moved’ by words either. Infact, the major tool of ego message is words which is also the major tool of emasculation. One of the general love languages of men is words of affirmation. Only a few things get a man charged and roaring to go than words of affirmation genuinely met. STATES OF MIND: • Reasonable Mind (Think): is the logical state of mind that people use when doing the math, reading a map, and various other concrete tasks. It is described as the “cool” state of mind that we use to deal with empirical facts. Using a reasonable mind to solve an emotional problem is a disaster e.g. Trying to address a person’s fear of flying by explaining aerodynamics and the latest safety standards of the Airspace Agency. • Emotional Mind (Feel): is the state of mind in which we feel the depth of our emotions and act from an emotional state. In an extreme, this state of mind would be used if we reacted impulsively out of anger without regard to consequences. This part responds to feelings, even if those feelings don’t match up with what we are observing. This is considered the “hot” state of mind. Using an emotional mind to solve a logical problem is a disaster e.g. unable to decide how to distribute limited medical resources during a pandemic. • Wise Mind (Know): is the state of mind in the middle of both logical and emotional mind. In wise mind, we are aware of our feelings, and we decide how to act in a way to honor our feelings and goals. In wise mind, if we were angered, we would acknowledge our feelings and act in a way that would not create negative consequences for ourselves. This is the highest state and the balance we should strive for to become ‘Emotionally Intelligent’ Everyone have their default state of mind therefore someone can be logical, emotional, or wise. An extreme of reasonable mind or emotional mind makes an individual appear cold or dramatic. Thus, we need a balance to successfully interact in our society. Consider the example below (a fave of mine ): A and B are friends and did not reach out to each other for a year. B decides to call A and the following scene plays out: B: Ah! A longest time, you just forgot about me abi? > Logical A: B, nothing stopped you from reaching out to me either > Emotion A: B, Did you call me? You are very XXXX for accusing me. It is my fault for picking up. > Wise A: Nor vex B, life has been busy In summary, how men and women make decisions (which is what determines who is emotional/logical) is largely based on their dominant state of mind (which is how they would process information). This doesn’t mean that men and women are same, think alike or react alike to same situations (outside the scope of this thread); the difference is not emotion vs logic. Without women there would be no word like emotion. Everything they do is based off emotions. Very gullible set of creatures. Reason why playboys and fraudsters like pastors get them easily. |

Re: Are Women More Emotional Than Men? by DoggoneDogg: 11:07am On Sep 05, 2021 |
Lazycyndy: Nigerian women's definition of simps is borne out of poverty. For example, if you take a girl out to a nice lunch & don't ask her to follow you home to Bleep afterwards, she sees you as a simp. She expects that after lunch, you should Bleep her to 'get your money back'. She doesn't know that lunch should be just lunch & nothing more thanks to poverty. 3 Likes |

bukatyne:Gosh! You sure do. You must be a full professor of psychology. I read the entire post though. OK! Here's my take on this topic: 1. Women are MORE emotional than men because y'all are naturally wired to use the "right" side of the brain [which deals with emotions] more than the "left" side of the brain [which deals with logic!]. Brain scans and neuroscience research affirm these facts, and I've got books in my home library on titles such as: "You Are The Placebo" to back it up. 2. Bukatyne, did you know that women have a sharper sense of smell than us men? There are more "nerve endings" in the nasal region of women so this makes women to pick up smells faster than men! 3. It's the same way that the clitoral region is packed with a lot of "nerve endings" and is very sensitive. Men don't have such concentrated nerve endings on the male glans [which is the clitoral equivalent]. I'm emphasizing these 3 examples to let you know that women are wired differently from men... Even though men and women exhibit the "twin aspects" of emotions and logic to varying degrees. Ciao. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

When you examine a fetus before the age of 16weeks, you won't be able to tell if it's a male or a female, it's from the 18th week (can be earlier or later due to lots of factors) that the difference starts to show... This difference is largely due to testosterone, the varying degree/concentration of this (and other hormones) causes structural changes in the fetus and thus in the overall behaviour of the child... When the child is now born, the child is treated differently by society, a male is taught not to cry, because it is believe that crying is "weakness" and men shouldn't be weak and the other hand, women are taught to be expressive as regards what they feel.... According to lamacks theory of use and disuse, the traits you don't use, you lose. And since this boychild is taught to not show emotions, that part of the brain starts to shrink over time, whilst that of the female thickens....thus the reason why women appear to be more emotional than men... The entire point I'm trying to make is that, men and women are different largely due to the society he grows up in, that's why the children of Nigerians who stay abroad before coming down here tend to act differently as compared to those born and brought up here in Nigeria.... Thus societal influence is the major factor why women appear to be more emotional than men 5 Likes 1 Share |

Interesting; nature vs nurture argument. I would not agree women are 'more emotional' than man in the literal sense; each sex just exhibit varying emotions more. |
