Well if you want to compromise,tell her mother and your family that you want to do a small ceremony and you guys can also do court marriage instead of an extravagant ceremony because most people in the ceremony would forget after a week.
I have been to many marriage ceremony and I too have forgotten most if not all of them. So don't try to impress anyone because you don't want people to talk.
