First of all, that's not a pillar Secondly, there's no cause for alarm as expansion joints are created to compensate for expansion and compression 2 Likes |

Judging from the picture, this is due to the expansion joint there. The Engineer who designed this, shouldn't have placed columns along an expansion joint. There are bound to be movement along expansion joints which is the cause of the cracks along the columns. |

That is called an expansion joint.... It is not a crack... A concrete expansion joint – or control joint – is a gap which allows the concrete to expand and contract as/when the temperature changes. So no cause for alarm... 2 Likes |

Originalsly:You sound like someone in the building profession yet you're holding on to a wrong assertion even though they've tried to explain to you here. Why are you bent on misleading others who do not know these things? Where do you mostly have expansion joints if not on floors, beams and columns? Isn't it so clear in the pictures? Even on walls, expansion is made between columns, you don't just tear walls to create expansion gaps. For Christ sakes, those round columns you see there are double columns. It's the reason for the 'cracks'. Perhaps it's the cylindrical shape of the columns that's confusing you cos most round columns are single, but not this one cos it's along an EXPANSION gap line so it MUST be double. 1 Like |

Tzar:Yes, I am, a 100%. The danger would rather be when there's no gap or the 'cracks' you see there. Without that deliberate vertical gap, the 'crack' would eventually force it's way harpharzadly along the columns because they are placed along an expansion gap line. That's when people should start crying. |

What we're seeing seemed to be an expansion joint which should be part of the design. Though the line of separation should have been clearly cut open to avoid urgly zigzag lines when the building become operational. An expansion joint or movement joint is an assembly designed to hold parts together while safely absorbing vibration and temperature-induced expansion and contraction of building materials to allow movement due to ground settlement or seismic activity. As you see those beams and columns showing cracks, they may be an expansion joint material which could be anything from “asphalt-impregnated-fiberboard” or "polystyrene sheets" used to fill and as a pour stop between concrete of both side of the beams and columns. DISCLAIMER: I am not testifying that the contractor used the above method during construction oooo. But whenever you see this kind of cracks, this is the first thing that should come to mine. |

Thats an expansion joint and not a crack. The expansion joint is a space provided in every substantial structure that enable the building or structure to breathe. |

zedman1: Are you not saying it isn't one cylindrical column but instead two half cylindrical columns? Who ever does that? Have you ever seen such?... or you're just theorizing? I've seen expansion joints on floors, sidewalks, bridges/flyovers, walls but never ever on a column itself. 1 Like |

emae009: Did you see expansion joints on a column of the flyover? That's the bone of contention here.... extention joint on a column. No doubt.. a flyover would have extention joints on the roadway and walls. |

Optimistguy1969: Yet again, before you know it, a huge sum of money will be released this time, but they will only patch up the cracks with a half bag of cement and repaint it and then claim it's been fixed. |

Xtopher123: If I understand you correctly ... you're saying the one column we are seeing is really two separate columns .... each supporting a separate beam in a different section of the lot .... double column... double beam. The split on the second column and the beam to support your point. Point taken. ( If that's really the case ... then I have safety issues with the design in the column is barely half the width of the beam and made worse by being half cylindrical.) I hear you... but still can't believe such a skinny cylindrical column can actually be two. And we wonder why buildings keep collapsing. I've seen sooo many columns being made..... various sizes... the amount of steel work that goes into a column amazed me ... concrete just being the icing on the cake... but this one is really beyond me. On columns and expansion joints .... I believe expansion joints are somehow on the top of the columns. I've noticed there's always a lot of "caterings" at the top of the columns ... I guess for attaching to the beams ... flexibility in terms of when the building sways due to wind impact or in cases of earthquakes and I guess for expansion and contraction. |

Originalsly:Have you never seen a square column from foundation made to appear round on the super structure just for aesthetics? What amazes me most is that your statement that you've never seen expansion joint run through columns. You think a gap can run vertically through a single column like the one in that picture? And you mentioned walls again. What do you think that 'crack' on walls run through?... COLUMNS OF COURSE! Are you an engineer, architect or any other professional in this field at all? If yes then that statement of yours is purely embarrassing. If no, I won't explain any further. Thanks. |
Re: Man Raises Concern Over Cracked Basement Pillar At The Lagos Airport (Photo) by Originalsly: 11:06am On Nov 29, 2021 |
zedman1: Yes... seen made square from foundation and later made round... guess not only for aesthetics but safety as well. No...I don't think a gap runs through a single column. Are you suggesting that happens? "Cracks" on walls run through columns? Really? I've been seeing sooo many building walls being put together like jig saw puzzles.... pre fabricated sections of the walls put together and have the " cracks" where the pieces come together. Presently... there's a super tall building under construction... but they been passing my way with sections of the wall for weeks now. When these are attached... wouldn't they leave a "crack"? They are no way connected to the columns. Two of the special transporters carrying sections of the wall.

This is an expansion joint that is very necessary for a structure of a long span. The joint is visible on the beam and slab too. Though it would have been better for the designer to change the columns at the expansion joint to square or rectangular shape for proper implementation. All the same no cause for alarm because it is structurally required to avoid major Cracks on the structure |

zedman1: 100% correct... the confusion is about a single cylindrical column when in fact it is two independent square columns "enveloped" in a cylindrical casing. Your photo shows that clearly.... and if encased will look pretty much the same as the one in discussion. Now I'm wondering ... judging from the encasememt and width of each beam... isn't the column wayyyy too skinny? Even comparing to your work... should you encase the beams would appear to be resting firm on the columns. Your thoughts. |

The authority have come out to say that it is safe that the rack is along the expansion joint which is very possible those in the construction work will understand that term and if u ever do high school physics too u will have idea of it. 1 Like |
