That's not new to me, they've been robbing other players to favoured him since, out of the seven given to him, he deserved four genuinely, there's a period they robbed Henry, Eto and C. Ronaldo.

If it is by statistic then go back to 2010 and check out sneijder statistic then you will know FIFA is never about fair play, they will always bend rules to favor Messi.

in 2018 they gave it to Modric on the ground that people were tired of the Messi and Ronaldo wining it every year simply cos they didn't want any player to equal or get close to Messi's number, this year they clearly robbed a clear winner just like in 2010 Schneider and 2019 Van Dijk..the award has already lost it's relevant couple of years ago, no one take it serious anymore.

If I were the organiser, if Lewandowski won't be winning this year award, his award should also have been caved for him and be presented to him this year, along with messi.....

Ribery wasn’t phenomenal or outstanding he just happened to be in an outstanding team and no player in the world had a better individual season than Ronaldo, Sneijder too suffered same fate in 2010, he wasn’t outstanding he was just in a phenomenal Inter team and now Lewandowski too. Without him Bayern will still win all the trophies they won in 2021 but the same can’t be said of Messi. Base on this your write up, was Modric better than Ronaldo when he was given the award in 2018 instead of CR7? If we want to be sincere the football governing bodies have their favourite.. this was evidence with Sepp Blatter outburst against Ronaldo that he later apologized for. The Balon D'or organiser denied Ronaldo and decided to hand such award to Modric. Whether we like it or not, we are partial beings.
