What l did next was to use the group link to invite them to the group after email sent to WhatsApp team to to unbanned it.

No. It will even indicate that it allows for just five at a go. With this method, you can have like 3k members in that group which is of course beyond the WhatsApp required numbers of 250 with no issues of being banned
