What they're saying is that we should speak more English to be included. Indeed, that's how they rip off people.

Note that they don't produce anything meaningful but rip off people worldwide through banking cartels, oil cartels, diplomacy cartels, English language cartels, education cartels, and things of that nature.

And they referred people to the commonwealth!! Well, the common wealth in and of itself is one big scam that nobody is talking about. It was set up as a lunching pad for future slavery. That's the exact reason you've been referred there!!

Boko Haramites (Western Education is a taboo) have really dealt a severe blow on Nigerians' proficiency in the English language as far as the UK is concerned.


How many school age children actually go to school, particularly in the NE and NW? And this scenario is likely to continue for God knows how long.


A country which claims the English language as its lingua-franca is now being declared as not having met the majority English language criterion.


I'm sure if Southern Nigerians are singled out, they would meet whatever proficiency test in English language the UK present.

Very dumb excuse, over 90% percent of schools in Nigeria teach using English from primary to tertiary. UK has no excuse.

Nigeria ranks top 5 of the highest scorers in the test in the world; this information is available on Wikipedia, so I beg to disagree. I think the major problems are the cost of taking the test, and the validity period.

They actually think we lose our English proficiency after two years of taking the test?! It's just a crazy money making scheme in my opinion.

Yes, Nigerians are one of the top performers. However, most Nigerians fail the test. Infact, the number of Nigerians who fail to reach the required standard is more than those who do.

I know several people who did 3-5 tries. Let them increase the validity period but they MUST continue to insist that Nigerians write IELTS. English is not the first language of most Nigerians. We can see a lot of code switching and improper grammar in the writing of many Nigerians on Nairaland. If one suggests that the poster improves their grammar, the retort is usually that English is not our language. Fine. English is not our language, so write IELTS.

If the other alternatives they listed is adopted by all or most education providers in the UK, that would be fine too. And it should be free or very cheap too.

Those that want it removed are those that had failed it several times.

The paradox is that if you are truly proficient in English, you should ace it in first trial.
It is not about acing the test. It is about the fee. Many people who wish to travel can't afford to pay such amount of money on a test when travelling is not guaranteed.

Not exactly.
Two provinces in Canada , for example, will accept 6.5 if one has a close relative residing in the province. The other provinces require at least an 8.0
However, the objective I am in support of is the extension of the validity of the certificate and possible reduction in cost.

Thank you dear advocators, for thus far you have all gone in this matter. Another twist to it is this, where we can't get a greater percentage who can communicate in English fluently...for those who have gone through the evaluation and qualified, the result should qualify them for life. #EndIELTSExpiration

If the council decides to use Nairaland as part of the study to decide if Nigeria meets the requirements to be taken off the list, we will not make it.

If the council equally decides to check out social media handles of BBC Sports, Sky News, ABC News and Sports, etc, they will realize the hypocrisy of the whole exercise!!!

The bigger problem is actually the duration. They can say what they like really.
I signed that petition.
I never wrote IELTS before but I wrote Toefl iBT in January 2016 and scored 91/120.
And just like IELTS, By 2018 January you wan tell me say I no sabi the language wey I sabi just 2yrs ago?
That's the madder thing they are doing.

This response does not make any sense on various levels...
They are literally saying that they have no data to that effect

First of all IELTS is affiliated to education and WASSCE annually releases data of Nigerian students who took the exams which is totally based on an English curriculum- A fact the British Council is completely aware of. If they assume they don't, they need to cross check with the UK department of education, maybe they may know something about uhhhm... Bilateral educational agreements, or commonwealth scholarship data? Maybe the Nigerian educational institutions and students they had contact with spoke Ebira...

I don't want to talk about the UK university intake data of Nigerian students who had IELTS waived. I mean, dear B.C consult your annual student visa database. Do you interview potential students in Idoma?

Or the fact they are aware that the Nigerian university system does not use Hausa, Yoruba or ibo as a medium of instruction ... yet there are annual graduation streams... Dear B.C please consult the NUC for data and it would be available.

There's literally data everywhere...

The sheer annual numbers of WAEC alone which have been constant since the 70's, should have caused the BC to review IELTS, so I don't get it.

So I don’t get the part where they say they don't have privy to such data?

Or is it the fact that the so called results expire after 2years, after prooving you can speak English... do they need data for that one??

The funny thing is, if you give them IELTS to write, apart from the spoken part, most of them would score 6 on reading and writing and blame it on ADHD!

That's a government reply.
I believe more than 60 per cent of Nigerians speak English and the evidence will be obvious if politicians from the North will stop giving cooked up census figures for selfish political agenda.

I don't know about extending the validity. I'm in support about reducing the fee as that is the real problems Nigerians have. If the exam was "free" with one year validity there would absolutely be no complaints
