The United States of America may be lagging behind nations like Russia and China in fielding hypersonic missiles, but that’s not necessarily the same as being behind in the hypersonic arms race.

While the idea of this modern arms race has been framed in the minds of many as a rush to develop and field hypersonic weapons, the truth is, hurrying to get them into service wouldn’t provide the U.S. with much in the way of real military capability.



Instead, America has taken a different approach to hypersonic missiles, opting to focus on fielding new and advanced capabilities rather than trying to beat the opposition to putting these weapons into service.

In other words, the hypersonic arms race we’re living amid today is more like a race to the starting line of a more important competition, and the U.S. is much more focused on winning the next sprint than this one.

it travels faster than the speed of sound meaning it will be nearly invisible to the eye and the radar, hence it will be impossible to be intercepted

The American Ground-Based Midcourse Defense System (GMD), formerly known as National Missile Defense (NMD), was first tested in 1997 and had its first successful intercept test in 1999. Instead of using an explosive charge, it launches a hit-to-kill kinetic projectile to intercept an ICBM.

The current GMD system is intended to shield the United States mainland against a limited nuclear attack by a rogue state such as North Korea. GMD does not have the ability to protect against an all-out nuclear attack from Russia, as there are 44 ground-based interceptors deployed in 2019 against any crossing projectiles headed toward the homeland.

(This interceptor count does not include the THAAD, or Aegis, or Patriot defenses against directly incoming projectiles.)
The Aegis ballistic missile defense-equipped SM-3 Block II-A missile demonstrated it can shoot down an ICBM target on 16 Nov 2020.

In November 2020, the US launched a surrogate ICBM from Kwajalein Atoll toward Hawaii in the general direction of the continental US, which triggered a satellite warning to a Colorado Air Force base. In response, USS John Finn launched a missile which destroyed the surrogate ICBM, while still outside the atmosphere.

There is a reason why USA tries to always be close to the borders of the countries they view as threats and that is to make for an easy ICBM interception while it is still outside the atmosphere. They have the tools and they are very effective

with what's happening in Ukraine, its obvious Russia only have numbers and not military strength.

USA have the most sophisticated modern weapon since inception, that's why no country dares them, not even your over hyped Russia.. If No fly zone is established in Ukraine, it will be only US that will carry out the operation by shooting down any fighter jet in air.. who else have such power?

What Russia can only burst of nukes, ask yourself how many NATO country can de destroy before USA retaliates, they will be buried.. and Russia will be forgotten. Usa are playing so cool and doesn't want an escalation instigation from them..

Russia is the world leader in rocket tech. Did you read the article at all? US is still budgeting for hypersonic research while Russia has already started fielding hypersonic missiles in combat.
Just 1 $200,000 missile will be enough to sink an aircraft carrier worth billions of dollars. Russia knows the future of warfare isn't in large aircraft carriers like the US uses to project power and that's why the Russians focus on missiles

Don't be afraid of what you know, in this instance the hypersonic missile. I can tell you the US military engineers are working to build interceptors for it. All destructive military weapons started this way and eventually interceptors were built.

However, be afraid of military capabilities that you don't know, you haven't seen, which existence had not dropped into your mind. This is the key and I can tell you these countries have the "unknown" in their arsenal. Any country that has the greater "unknowns" win the war. Fear the US, their military budgets can create many undisclosed military "unknowns".

There are basically 3 stages to an ICBM velocity. It is vulnerable from stage 1 to 2 which is when it basically shoots off outside the Earth's atmosphere before now locking on to it's target for stage 3.

Between stage 1 and 2 it can be shot down and the below demonstrates that.

Are you in the US military to confirm what you insinuate cos information of such is highly classified in the military, how do you know about USA having developed such weapons 20 years ago? US, Russia, China, India and France all have hypersonic missiles. What US is working on is a hypersonic missile defence technology and i guess they must have figured this out but are keeping it covert.
