Men tends to shy away and disbelief anything that they cannot logically explain. Not everything you can understand by using your sense knowledge.
There are mysteries about the world that you might not by just Sense knowledge grasp, otherwise how would you explain the level of civilization scientist have discovered in ancient Egypt? That alone tells you that the world is more deeper than you think. Or do you think Egypt depended only in Sense knowledge?

Rules of swimming.

Never jump into the water after drinking.

Never jump into the water to impress any girl when you clearly know that you can't swim.

In his next life he will avoid waters like plague.if you had been to that river, you would have known it's not about if he knows how to swim/if he wants to impress women. The conditions beneath that river is freezing. A good swimmer can easily get drowned if you are not used to severe cold conditions and that was the situation here.

This I have seen.
