Atiku's emergence as PDP'S flag bearer has changed the equation in many ways. The ruling party must have been praying for an unpopular candidate like Wike to win PDP primaries which would have allowed them to present any candidate in APC and still win comfortably. Unfortunately for them, it didn't work out that way and Atiku won.

Now let's consider certain factors;

1. Atiku is from NE and they haven't ruled Nigeria since Tafawa Balewa. So they share similar sentiments with SE in terms of equity and fairness.

2. Atiku has been contesting for so long and is now known to many Nigerians. His face and name is not strange.

3. He has so much money at his disposal, regardless of whether it is illgotten or not. Such money will be used to campaign aggressively and bribe lots of people including the impoverished masses.

4. Rumors claimed that Atiku actually defeated Buhari in the last election but was rigged out. You may argue that Peter Obi gave him so much credibility but even without Peter Obi on his side, he still remains relatively popular and bearing in mind non of the aspirants anywhere near Buhari in popularity, at least in the North.

Let's look at the top contestants in APC:

1. Osinbajo.
2. Lawan.
3. Amaechi.
4. Jonathan.
5. Tinubu.
6. Umahi.
7. Rochas.

I see non of these men as capable of defeating Atiku on election day. If in fact, Jonathan will be a fool to allow himself dragged into this race because a defeat in the hands of Atiku will will not only humiliate him, but will rubbish him totally.

Lawan is largely unknown in the South and even in the North, he is not half as popular as Atiku.

Amaechi is from a micro minority tribe and can't get block votes anywhere. Worse still, majority of Northerners will definitely vote Atiku than a "kafir".

Tinubu is only popular in the SW, and being a Muslim means he can only hope to use a Christian Northerner as VP. He may have a huge amount embezzled money at his disposal to match Atiku's but it won't change much on ground because Northerners will collect money/goods from him and still vote their own.

Osinbajo probably has the most promising chance in APC currently, he could get block votes from SW, significant votes from SE and SE but will still fail miserably in the North as a "kafir"

Same faith will apply on Umahi and Rochas.

The fact that Tambuwal who pretended to be Wike's best friend. Enjoyed Wike's stolen money and gave the impression he would stand with Wike any day could betray him so blatantly speaks a lot about Northerners. Tambuwal is from NW, Atiku is from NE yet three factors i.e. religion, ethnicity and region was what he considered before throwing Wike under the bus.

I won't be surprised if the ruling party and cabals goes behind to negotiate with Atiku for a soft landing post 2023.
