The next 24 hours is crucial to the survival of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Will the ruling party overcome the challenge of picking a presidential candidate without risking an explosion?

Monday, the national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, stirred controversy. He announced Senate President Ahmed Lawan as the choice of President Muhammadu Buhari. This was interpreted by many as the party’s “consensus candidate” as the President has asked the governors of the party and the presidential aspirants to consult and adopt the option.

Adamu told the party’s NWC that he had held consultations with Buhari and that he had the President’s mandate to inform the members. The pronouncement generated uproar within and outside the party, with many wondering if some agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not have invaded the APC national secretariat to cause last minute confusion, create disaffection among party leaders and weaken the platform ahead of the general election to pave the way for the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as president.

Those who nurse the fear pointed out that certain few defectors to the APC from the PDP may still be maintaining strong links with their former party, thereby constituting themselves into enemies within.

Few minutes after Adamu’s pronouncement , aggrieved APC Northern governors stormed Aso Villa to meet the president.

Alighting from the emergency meeting, they told reporters that ‘on zoning to the South they stood, ‘rejecting Adamu’s unilateral declaration and its divisive and destabilising consequences.

It was evident that the NWC and governors now suspect the party chairman, following the loss of mutual trust and confidence.
They are likely to take their pound of fresh, now or in the future. In hush tones, some radical party leaders said they may call for his resignation.

Many are angry that Adamu opted for the confusing information to scuttle the prospects of credible and democratic primary, where delegates will choose the most popular candidate.

The move was infuriating to the Northern governors, who had earlier been applauded by their Southern counterparts. Northern governors want to erase the insinuation that the primary has paled into a deep rift between the North and the South. By insisting on zoning, it means the chairman is now isolated.

To observers, the meaning of consensus is beyond the ken and comprehension of some party leaders.

The provision of the Electoral Act on consensus is clear. The party may suggest it, but it cannot impose a consensus candidate. Consensus, says former National Legal Adviser Babatunde Ogala (SAN), is not about the majority, but it can only be the unanimous decision of all aspirants, without exception. “Therefore, only aspirants can make a final decision on consensus, not the party,” he maintained.

Ogala, who is a member of the Media and Communication sub-committee of Tinubu Campaign Organisation said APC cannot afford to run foul of the law.

A lot of drama is going on in Abuja. Some aspirants are leading in the race, just on the social media. Ogala said the campaign group is not bothered about sponsored media ranking of aspirants, designed to project weak contenders and systematically malign the strong aspirant.

The Director of Media and Communications of the group, Bayo Onanuga, said majority of party members have the confidence that the frontline aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will win.

Echoing him, Ogala said: “The President has highlighted the qualities of a candidate the APC deserves-national acceptability, ability to win, deep knowledge of the party and ability to inspire confidence among Nigerians. Based on these criteria, it is evident that Asiwaju Tinubu has an edge.”

It is indisputable that the former governor of Lagos will do well in Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Borno, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, Gombe, Kwara, Edo, Oyo, Cross River and Anambra.

Section 84(9) (10) and (11) of the Electoral Act 2022 are the relevant provisions and they state as follows:

“(9) A political party that adopts a consensus candidate shall secure the written consent of all cleared aspirant for the position, indicating their voluntary withdrawal from the race and their endorsement of the consensus candidate”.

Where a political party is unable to secure a written consent of all cleared aspirants for the purpose of a consensus candidate, it shall revert to the choice of direct or indirect primaries for the nomination of candidates for the aforesaid elective
(11) A special convention or nomination congress shall be held to ratify the choice of consensus candidates at designated centers at the National, State, Senatorial, Federal and State Constituencies, as the case may be”.

APC denies endorsing Lawan as consensus candidate for 2023

Instructively, none of the above conditions have occurred in respect of producing the presidential candidate of the APC. Therefore, any declaration of a consensus candidate would be premature and a violation of extant provisions of the law.

We are confident that as a law-abiding entity, the APC will not be part of such.

We are further persuaded to urge our supporters to disregard this report considering that the overwhelming majority of the APC Northern Governors who, after meeting with the President, re-affirmed their preference for a president from the Southern part of Nigeria. This patriotic decision is widely accepted by all Nigerians as a demonstration of deep understanding of the nuanced fault lines of our nation.

In the circumstance, a unilateral declaration by the National Chairman of a consensus presidential candidate for the party will not only violate the law, but set the party on collision course with its Governors who are critical stakeholders in the party.

Thank you.

BABATUNDE OGALA; SAN.
Director; Legal Directorate Tinubu Campaign Organization.

Tinubu saw the handwriting on the wall, that was why he spoke out in Abeokuta.

Even if Adamu wanted to present Lawan, he was not suppose to do it the way he did it. He should have been left the job for the president to do, it seems he didn't just overestimate himself, he also overestimated the power of the cabals. I doubt he will finish his tenure as the party chairman.

You are underestimating the power of the Governors and party.

If Buhari raise Lawan hand, it will change nothing so far the Governors refuse to work for Lawan.

cry There is no way a Region can ever survive Federal might, except they unite with another Region in the Country. APC Southeast need to support APC Southwest before it becomes too late!!!

When I and everyone believed that Peter Obi is PDP Choice, my Hope was high and I vowed to Vote him. Now that Oshinbanjo or Tinubu is the Hope for Southern Nigeria stop our People from being slaughtered, our fathers killed, women and sisters from being brutally raped, why are Igbos not supporting the Yoruba Candidate; this is Ultimate Wisdom when it is most needed in the History of Nigeria.

Like if you agree with what this guy said below.
africanpride1:
It is height of Self-deception to think redundant Labour Party would perform miracles to better PDP and APC during National Election. Are Igbos the most senslessly selfish Satanic Self-deceitful people on Earth?! Their Self-deceitful over-bloated Ego and satanic had made them to once again Destroy Nigeria Chance of becoming Free from Under Fulani Bondage. Why does it make them to sell the future of their next Generation into eternal Slavery?

We know how Igbos controlled right from the last Convention when the current PDP Chairman was manovoured into Office. How come same Igbos still collected Millions from Fulani Atiku to make him get the Presidential Ticket instead of Obi their brother? How can a People be so senselessly greedily to so cheaply selfishly sell their Chance of becoming President just like that that?! If Obi had been the PDP Flag bearer, APC would have had no Choice than to also field in a Southerner as their Presidential Flag Bearer too, knowing fully well that it is the Turn of Southerner to Lead Nigeria. My heart still bleeds because I vowed to Vote Obi thinking Igbos are not just hypocrites that could sell him so cheaply and enthrone same Fulani that has been slaughtering and marginalizing them from Adam.
