We’ll decentralise national grid, invest $550m to boost power supply – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is decentralising the nation’s national grid through renewable mini-grids to address the challenges of electricity supply across the country.

The president, who revealed this in an interview he granted Bloomberg News, said the Federal Government had earmarked 550 million dollars to provide 20,000 Standalone Solar Systems, SHS, as well as Solar Hybrid mini-grids in over 250 locations.

“We are also decentralising the national grid through renewable-driven mini-grids.

“The 550 million dollar Nigeria Electrification Project has deployed more than 20,000 Standalone Solar Systems (SHS), as well as Solar Hybrid mini-grids in over 250 locations,” he said.

On grid modernisation, the Nigerian leader said there were hundreds of ongoing projects and initiatives attracting funding from local and foreign investors.

He said: “Take my Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a government-to-government initiative between the Governments of Nigeria and Germany, with Siemens AG, to upgrade the electricity grid with a 2 billion dollar investment.

“Once signed into law the constitutional amendment bill – recently voted through parliament – will allow state governments to generate and transmit their own electricity, further facilitating investor participation in our market and enabling states and local businesses to transmit excess supply to the grid.”

On the persistent calls on Nigeria by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to remove fuel subsidy, the president remarked that subsidy removal was becoming increasingly untenable.

“Most western countries are today implementing fuel subsidies. Why would we remove ours now? What is good for the goose is good for the gander!

“What our western allies are learning the hard way is what looks good on paper and the human consequences are two different things.

“My government set in motion plans to remove the subsidy late last year. After further consultation with stakeholders, and as events unfolded this year, such a move became increasingly untenable,” said Buhari.

He added that boosting internal production for refined products would also help.

“Capacity is due to step up markedly later this year and next, as private players and modular refineries (Dangote Refinery, BUA Group Refinery, Waltersmith Refinery) come on board.

“The exchange rate is still susceptible to external shocks that can suddenly and severely affect Nigerian citizens.

“As we step up domestic production – both in fuel (enabled by PIA) and food (agricultural policies) – the inflationary threat shall diminish, and we can move toward unification,” he said.

What is holding the senate from passing the bill to decentralize electricity into law by pressuring the President to sign?
The real decentralization should happen in states!
Remove the electricity/power supply laws in the constitution from the exclusive list and place it on the concurrent list!
In other words,States should be empowered to build gencos(generating company),trancos(transmitting company) and discos(distribution company) or they can simply give licences to private power companies to provide electricity to the citizens of that state!
This will ensure that buoyant states like Lagos or rivers state will provide their own power without relying on the national grid that is always subject to frequent collapse!
Any state that cannot provide their own power can either continue with the national grid or tap from states with the funds or capacity to generate, transmit and distribute electricity!
Attaining a stable and consistent electricity system is integral to our economy and I do not see the entire country having stable power supply using the national grid!
There must be division of labour and the states government must assume that responsibility to provide or give licences to companies to provide power instead of waiting for the FG to do such!

All very well, but so long as power is sold at a loss, so long as government sets the price, not the acutal companies, and so long as some people, rich, poor, government and private agencies and companies do not pay their bills.....all these are dreams, not reality.

We are shortchanging our power sector. Have been for decades.

Modifed

The issues facing the Nigerian power sector remains multi-faceted but in our view, top on the list is the non-cost reflective tariff. While we acknowledge that the current macroeconomic landscape may not be best suited for another hike in electricity tariffs, we note that the continued adoption of non-cost-reflective tariffs will exacerbate the anemic position of Discos, prevent the overhaul of poor transmission infrastructure, hinder private sector investments and constrain the development of the power sector. With government revenue under significant pressure, we believe government liquidity injections may prove to be insufficient in sustaining the power sector
.

The Nigerian power sector, still in muddy waters...nairametrics.

A confused man. The Siemens agreement was signed since 2018 and you are dancing around with nothing on ground. Egypt signed theirs in 2016 and has since added more than the power the whole Nigeria consumes.

This is what happened when you have old people who can't think properly at the helm.of affairs.

This is the.sole reason APC must not continue because they have brain dead leaders and PDP won't be allowed either because they failed previously like their twin party. Also, their flag bearer sells generators,he will sabotaged our power sector.

A breath of fresh air is what we need and Peter Obi is the fresh air.

This man is high on loud…my question is do his kids also wake up and feel their father is a terrible performer and failure as a leader or do they feel he has done well because he used our state resources to organize lavish wedding ceremonies for them?
Eitherways Buhari is an olodo from top to bottom.

After a complete 7 years of calamity, look at what this FULANI @NIMAL IS STILL SPEWING WITH HIS GWORO DECAYED TEETH. They no longer blame PDP again but to make unrealistic plan within their already wasted years. What they couldn't do in 7 years, they want to do in 1 year. A complete mockery and shame

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday unfolded its power agenda should it presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, be elected.

The party plans to generate at least 20,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity in four years to surpass Nigeria’s consumption level of around 15, 000mw.

In a statement, the party’s Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) expressed dismay that the Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan had only added 1.400mw to the national grid in four years.
