Slavery. But better than nothing.
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by tunjidachosen(m): 3:37pm On Aug 15, 2022
Everything is not all about money...if it aligns well with your future goals and ambitions, then take it and get the experience..money can't buy experience. The most important thing for a fresh graduate is to learn first hand, the money is important but more important is the experience. Just be sure that they are well structured so that you can even learn not just the job but how an organisation is setup and run.

Dunno about you, but there's no way in hell I'll be taking this offer. Nothing flexible about it for a "graduate trainee". Although, as many people have said, if you see a future in the opportunity, by all means go for it.

When you wan take buy your first whip with that kind money sef? And that's aside the duo of accomodation fees and transaction you'd be paying out of your bucket. Please with what kind of work? There is serious hungry in this country, kindly carry me along boss.

Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by Growingboi(m): 3:40pm On Aug 15, 2022
First year means first 12 months. 2nd year mean next 12 months.

SimplyAJ:
Wait let me get something first. Is gross pay monthly or yearly? grin
If it's yearly, then it's a no no. Better offers ahead. cool
Cuz I don't see how 50k in a year would meet your daily needs (even of you're still living with your parents)

Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by Mbenny(m): 3:42pm On Aug 15, 2022
you have to even think of cost of accommodation and feed for the start. assuming you are in Lagos it would have been good.
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by Olumaeme: 3:45pm On Aug 15, 2022

Hello Nairalanders,
I need advice regarding this opportunity.

I applied for an Engineering Graduate Trainee Position recently. I wrote the aptitude and technical tests and passed. I also attended the interview and I was successful.

The Contract Form was sent to me and I saw some clauses that I need to discuss here before I append my signature.

1. The training runs for two years before conversion to a full staff.

2. You cannot terminate the contract for the training once you sign. You must stay for the full two years.

3. There is a canteen at the factory, but you have to buy the food.

4. There is no full HMO benefits but the factory has a clinic to attend to medical needs of the trainee.

5. The gross pay for the first year is 50K. The gross pay for the second year is 70K and from the third year, you earn 100K.

6. The company does not offer accommodation for the trainees.

7. I am not sure if the company uses staff bus.

8. Work is Monday to Saturday. 9:00AM to 6:00PM. Although Saturday work ends by 1:00PM

NOTE: I stay in the FCT so I would need to relocate. The company is in Lagos.

To join or not to join is your decision but get this straight, no company can tie you down with them, it's not legal. If you owe them some obligations, they may say you should pay back but they can't force you to work for them if you have a better offer, that's categorized as employment slavery and it's illegal.

Honestly, a job of 50K without accommodation nor benefits is very slavish. I am not sure you have considered what your total cost of relocation and accommodation in lagos will be compared to the compensation. When you do, you may find that it is not attractive at all.

On the legal side of things, I believe the Company is just trying to be smart by half. I am not sure they can enforce any kind of bond arrangement before they make you a full staff. Cos with the stated clauses, it would appear you are a contract staff with very limited rights. Goodluck on whatever you decide.

I will advice you take the job and dedicate that 2 years so you can have the needed experience to be marketable in the labour market and of course get a better offer.
Because this offer for a graduate trainee is very ok.
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by Chymummy89: 3:50pm On Aug 15, 2022
That 50k won't even be enough for transportation in Lagos let to talk of feeding and accomodations. Poster forget about the certificate for now and find a business and start instead of taking that kind offer. Best of luck as u join Lagos state stress.
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by cedricksly: 3:52pm On Aug 15, 2022
Don't take this job, it is slavery..... 50k gross is approximately 40 to 38k net, only transport fair for lagos will finish that money, let's not even talk accommodation and feeding yet... Honestly you are better off without that job..

I'm very sure you don't know the gravity of the agreement he'll sign.

You can't leave within that two years, you think it's a joke angry

OhiOfIhima:
I will take it and pray a better offer come within 6-12months into the training, then I leave the work. Make I go dey wait them to do their worst... Nonsense!
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by einsteine(m): 4:01pm On Aug 15, 2022
50k will probably consume all your transport.

I don't see how the company will be able to get top talent with this kind of nonsense.

50k yet you want to tie the person for two years. Two plus years before you earn 100k.

50k is not even up to 100 USD.

Bro,
Please don't take the Job.

Considering the location, do you have accommodation in Lagos?

Honest feedback.

This is slavery in disguise.

The pay is nonsense pay 50k gross (40k net at most).
No lunch, no trport.

2 yrs bond on a 40k salary in Lagos, u go hear wehn cos na hunger and anger go finish u
You will regret taking such offer cos Ur salary can't take u home let alone u having a take home.

Run Run Run.
It is slavery in disguise.

My guess is the coy is either a Chinese/india/lebanese coy cos na dem dey do this kind nonesense.

I'm repeating it Run and keep searching. U re beta off unemployed than slaving away for this kinda contract

Modified
OP don't mind anyone telling u to accept the offer. It is modern day slavery raise to power 2..

Surviving in Lagos with this kinda pay no be beans oo.
Transportation alone will finish this pay let alone feeding and accommodation even if u ve free trport, accommodation and feeding it is still a No No. 2 years bond for a graduate on a 40k salary.

The only thing that can make me advise u to accept this offer is if:
1 there is no bonding
2 u ve free accommodation, transportation and feeding.

If any of the 2 above is missing don't try it cos u will regret it
Case close

I wonder how some of these companies feel sef.

So if you decide to stop going to work after you sign, what exactly will happen? undecided

It's a shitty contract tho.

The reason why that two years bond clause is there is because people are leaving the job in droves. Like you said the OP had better move on ....
Re: Graduate Trainee: Should I Take This Employment Offer? by Watinhapen(m): 4:07pm On Aug 15, 2022
@OP, this situation you’re can be good for you or can be very bad for you too. If I were you, I will try to go to the company and make first-hand research myself. Go to the company and look for people working there. Ask questions to know if the company is good for them or not. A company that ask you to sign that you won’t leave in 2 years may have something fishy they’re hiding. Maybe others use to run away from the company when they can’t take it anymore and this have made them draw a contract to bind you to them. Don’t go looking for a job and end up killing yourself. Engineering is a very stressful profession. As for the pay, it is very poor but since you’re a fresher you need to start from somewhere to gain experience. For now, you need to balance the workload with the pay. You shouldn’t be doing work of 500k while you’re being paid just 50k. Make adequate research first about that company before signing that contract paper.

You can't survive in Lagos with 50K.....Just hold on and trust God for a better job. Currently Companies abroad are pouching staff from Nigeria. And trust me positions are available just use linkedin very well. Linkedin works more than you can imagine. Alternatively, You can accept the job just that you have to leave before 6 months. Cos you will be under probation for 6 months and you can get something better "you need to be extremely sharp to achieve this" Trust me that 50k is too small to survive in Lagos. The Company sounds like a struggling-to-grow kinda company. A graduate shouldn't take anything less than 100k except you don't know your worth
