The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, has resigned.

His resignation comes barely 24 hours after a seven-storey building caved in, killing at least five persons with fears that more bodies will be recovered from the site.

This was confirmed in a statement on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

It is however not clear if the commissioner tendered his resignation immediately after the collapse happened.

But the Information Commissioner said Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, accepted Salako’s resignation.

Omotoso explained that the governor’s acceptance of Dr. Salako’s resignation is a prelude to the restructuring of the ministry and its agencies.

“The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has accepted the resignation of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako,” the statement read.

Sanwo-Olu also thanked the commissioner for “his services to the State and wishes him success in his future endeavours.”

The governor equally warned all players in the sector to respect the law or face the consequences of any indiscretion, no matter who the perpetrators are.

Channels Television had reported how the building situated at Oba Idowu, Oniru Street collapsed on Sunday in the Victoria Island area of the state.

Although the immediate cause of the collapse is still sketchy, emergency workers and security operatives have already moved to the site to rescue the trapped victims.

The situation forced the Lagos State Government to order the arrest of the developer and other building professionals working on the collapsed seven-storey building in the Victoria Island area of the state.

Lagos has experienced a series of building collapses, despite efforts by the state government to curb the menace.

The most tragic recent one happened last November when a high-rise building crumbled in the Ikoyi area of the state, killing at least 44 people and injuring many others.

Similarly, eight bodies were recovered after a three-storey building collapsed in Ebute-Metta in May.

Also in May, another building in the Ago Palace Way area of Lagos State collapsed.

August also recorded another building collapse leading to the death of two children in the Bariga area of the state

I think he has conscience because i remember Abba Moro and many others who doesn't care if one thousand dies.

But he shouldn't have resigned yet! Let investigation take place first, thereafter, he can then do the needful! For me, he is a brave man! We need more of such people in government, who takes responsibilities no matter the circumstances!

I don't think this man is a Nigerian politician because i have never seen a Nigerian taking responsibility for errors.

Good decision he has made, otherwise he could be fired by the Governor.

Just address the issue of high cost of building material in the country and building collapse will drastically reduced.

Is there any engineer that doesn't know how to add more cement and rod if available?
