Hello nairalanders!
I am curious and ready to learn because I-AM-NOT-UNDERSTANDING.

I earn 300k monthly, working and residing in Lagos state with a wife(not working yet) and two(2) kids. Despite that, I have been able to save only 220k from January to August. I feel I can do more.

If you are independent and a salary earner,
HOW MUCH DO YOU EARN?
HOW MUCH HAVE YOU SAVED?
HOW DID YOU SAVE IT?

Make person learn and see what can be done for the remaining four (4) months.

You should be investing what you save, probably in properties. If you are earning N300k I will suggest that you put aside N100,000 monthly.

You get expenses?

Two persons can start a job at the same day with same salary structure, one would do better than the other overtime, it's not because he's more prudent but because there are fewer pressures and expenses on him.

I bought my first plot of land while I was earning 20k monthly, then I saved #300k to buy it after 18 months, but since billings come many, even with higher pay, On God na I dae talk.

Make sense

You need savings or income generating assets, if not one might be tempted to sell the things we have used money to buy eg land, uncompleted properties etc at giveaway prices when emergency happens

Could you elaborate more on putting your money into property? What is the return on investment like ? And what is the timeframe withing which you cash out on the property business?

Putting your money in properties get level.
It depends on your plans, the purpose you want the property to serve and your pocket.

1) Real estate investment: this depends on your pocket, experience, how ‘aggressive’ you want to be involved in the business. So, it’s not one size fits all.
Some buy land and keep for later sale. Some buy acres, split them into units and start aggressive marketing, hiring celebrities and influencers as their ambassadors. You see them in property section. Most of those estates are not habitable yet.
Some build commercial builds like malls, shopping complex, hotels.
Some buy landed properties in strategic areas and rent them out to businesses like car wash, car park.
Developers buy properties, build and resale in units.
There are variations like joint ventures too.
Some simply buy land, build units of apartments and rent them out as short let or annual tenancy.
Just choose the one that suits you and do extensive research on it before putting your money into it.

2) Residential. Some see this as investment, since they will no longer pay rent. Some don’t. This is because the cost of building a house can set up a good business for them or, expand the existing one. Even after building the said house, the location may not be suitable for them, as it may be far from their place of work. Some end up visiting on weekends.
2 of my tenants are landlords. They only go home on weekends.

You have 3 non working dependants and you want to save. Continue to dream.

Don't go and look for work for your wife.
Open a business for your wife na.
Or let her get a job to support the family.
As for me, my savings is within 50K this year. My salary is minimum wage. And it's through con.

Actually, life after NYSC isn't funny, I saved almost all my allawee during my year of service. 2021 was a rough year for me, I used all my life savings transporting from one jobs interview to another, I wasted almost 200k.

This year 2022, I started a business with the little capital I had, though the shop I am using ain't mine, just an attachment, I make 80-120k monthly, and the owner of the shop already eying my business. my business is just 5 months old and All thanks to God business moving on well.

I saved all the money I earn, not marry but I am hoping to do that in year to come.

I just had to ignore the guy. Person wey no get responsibility or person wey Dey see support Dey always think it’s easy to save .
That’s why I’m trying every possibility to get the basic things before I marry and start having children,
I’ll just know that maintenance money , feeding fee and school fee na hin remain.
